4. How to Control bleeding – effective manner
Using your fingers or palm, press down
1 directly on the wound. Use a clean pad if
possible. Maintain pressure on the wound for
at least 10 minutes to allow the blood to clot.

Do not apply pressure if an object is
2 embedded in the wound. Instead, push the
edges of the cut together as much as possible,
and press down firmly on both sides.

If the wound is on an arm or leg, you can
3 slow the blood flow by lifting the limb above
the level of the victim's heart.

7. WARNING - NEVER USE A TOURNIQUET
Note
Never use a
tourniquet. You
could make the
bleeding worse and
cause further
damage to the
injured tissues.

8. POISONING – Emergency treatment
If a person has swallowed an acid or burning
1 poison, such as kerosene or any other
household chemicals

a. Give sips of milk or water to the
2 victim, making sure she does not
choke.
b. Help the victim to the health centre
immediately.
DO NOT make a person vomit acid
poison, as this will cause more burning

10. POISONING – Emergency treatment
If a person has swallowed a poison that is not acid (for example,
poisonous berries, seeds, mushrooms, pesticide or medicines) and
is still awake:
a. Give sips of water to the victim, making sure she does
not choke. Help the victim to the health centre immediately.
b. Do not induce vomiting. If the victim vomits on her own
however, bring a sample to the health centre so medical
personnel can identify the poison.

If the person is still in contact with the electricity, you MUST do the
following before you administer First Aid:

Stop the current! Switch off the
2 electrical current at the main switch
before pulling out the plug.

If you cannot stop the
3 current, you MUST:
Remove the electrical
source from the person. To
protect yourself, stand on a
piece of wood or folded
paper, and wear rubber
shoes. Using a piece of dry
wood (for example, a
broom) or rolled papers,
knock the electrical source
away from the person.

14. BURNS & SCALDS – emergency treatment
Lay the victim down, taking
1 care that the burn does not
come in contact with the
ground. Rinse the burn with
cold water for 10 minutes,
checking the victim's pulse
and breathing as you do so.

15. BURNS & SCALDS – emergency treatment
Gently peel back clothing,
2 but do not touch it if it is
stuck to the burn. Remove
watches, jewelleries , belts,
tight clothing and anything
similar before swelling
begins.

16. BURNS & SCALDS – emergency treatment
Cover the burn with a sterile
3
dressing. If one of suitable
size is not available, use
ordinary kitchen cling film
instead. However, remember
to discard the first two turns
from the roll to avoid
contaminating the wound with
germs. Cover the victim with
a blanket to keep her warm
and prevent shock.
Call an ambulance and check the
4 victim's pulse and breathing as
you wait
