Systems Thinking looks at the whole of a system rather than focusing on its individual parts, to better understand complex phenomena. Systems Thinking contrasts with analytic thinking: you solve problems by going deeper, by looking at the greater whole of a system and the relations between its elements, rather than solving individual problems in a linear way via simple cause and effect explanations. You can apply Systems Thinking principles in different situations: to understand how large organisations function and design for the enterprise (e.g. when you are trying to revamp a large intranet), but also to solve social problems and issues (e.g. unemployment with disadvantaged youth or mobility in larger cities). So basically whenever there is complexity and conflict (of interest) in your project, Systems Thinking will be helpful. After an introduction to Systems Thinking and its core concepts, we will first explain and practice a few techniques that you as a designer can apply to better understand complex systems, for example creating a System Map and drawing Connection Circles. In the second part of the workshop, we will introduce techniques that help you shape solutions, for example using Paradoxical Thinking for ideation and writing ‘What-if’ Scenarios. As thinking human beings and team leaders or architects we can benefit from knowing more about how we think, deliberate and decide. Most teams rely on trust, transparency, collaboration, and collective decision-making. “Thinking, Fast and Slow,” by Daniel Kahneman explains two systems that drive how we think. System 1 thinking is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slow, deliberate, and logical. In this presentation you learn how fast and slow thinking affects your reactions, behaviors, and decision-making. You’ll explore how several common development practices (with an emphasis on some agile practices), can amplify and exploit your thinking abilities and where they might lead you astray. Fast thinking works pretty well in a well-known context. You save time when you don’t have to deliberate over details and nuances in order to make informed decisions. But fast thinking can lead to extremely poor decisions. You might jump to conclusions, be wildly optimistic, or greatly under-assess risks and rewards. You need to exploit both fast and slow thinking and be acutely aware of when fast thinking is tripping you up.

We applied nudge theory to our healthcare wearable, Under Currents, to solve billions of dollars’ worth of medical errors and save lives. When common sense fails, common sensors help us be the best version of ourselves. Complexity Science Through the Lens of Gardening - Permaculture Principles for Complex Systems Design In this session, we will explore complexity science through the lens of an interdisciplinary gardening system called permaculture. Complexity science is a trans-disciplinary effort with investigators from different disciplines working jointly to create new concepts, theories, and methods that integrate and move beyond discipline-specific approaches. In the mid-twentieth century, a diverse set of research domains such as biology (Turing), chemistry (Prigogine), meteorology (Poincare & Lorenz), and mathematics (Weaver & Mandelbrot) discovered that complexity was a new kind of science, and principles like non-linearity and sensitivity to initial conditions were found to be relevant to complex systems regardless of the domain. Anyone who works with people - from the smallest teams to the largest organizations - works within complex adaptive systems. Daniel Walsh will introduce participants to permaculture design principles and facilitate small group discussions on how these pragmatic principles might be repurposed across domains to inform interventions and lead positive change within teams and organizations. Speaker Bio Daniel Walsh is a coach, consultant, and founder of nuCognitive.com and FiveWhyz.com. He specializes in Lean & Agile coaching, Product Management, and Applied Complexity Theory (e.g. Cynefin, Sense-making, Liberating Structures). He helps clients to resolve complex, intractable problems resistant to traditional methods and is an advocate for the integration of learning with work, the cultivation of cultures where people thrive, and the application of heuristics to deliver holistic solutions to customer problems.
