  10. 10. Rig Orders 5/4/2016 © Finpro10
  11. 11. Consequences – Reactions from the industry 04/05/2016 11 © Finpro •Bloodbath across the industry is far from over. Currently poor rig demand, rig oversupply, order cancellations and payment risks. •Oil drillers have stopped or put aside plans for exploration and production. •Competition among offshore and marine firms have become stiffer. •Customers has requested for delivery deferments and in some case, contract termination. In some cases, legal action has been taken for failing to take delivery •Keppel Offshore & Marine and Sembcorp Marine, the world’s leaders in rig building have racked up sizeable declines in earnings. •Smaller companies which made up 98% of the industry have not been spared from the collateral damage •Charter rates has dropped by as much as half and customer are taking a longer time to close a deal because they are constantly comparing prices and asking for more things. •Petrobas (of Brazil) corruption scandal and its rig-building firm Sete Brasil has added to the crisis as their network of suppliers includes players from Singapore.
  12. 12. Prospects For the industry 04/05/2016 12 © Finpro •Marine business is cyclical. Oil prices will eventually reach a sustainable level. •Companies are venturing into geographical areas they didn’t go to previously. E.g Middle East region • Companies trying to retain core capabilities so that they would be prepared to take on new orders when the market recovers. •Some companies still investing money on developing new, cutting edge product designs for its customers as an edge over its competitors. •Half of the rig fleet at current is >30 years' old and should gradually be retired. •If there is a sharp recovery in oil prices, it might raise demand for newbuild rigs especially drillships and harsh-environment jackups • Singapore continues investing in R&D to address the challenges of offshore oil & gas exploration & production.
