PM Modi’s vision for a New India, where every youth has the opportunity to thrive, is coming to life. SPIRITUAL SPEAK “One who neither rejoices nor grieves, neither likes nor dislikes, who has renounced both the good and the evil, and who is full of devotion, such a person is dear to Me.” —Bhagavad Gita IN-DEPTH RAHUL GANDHI IS CAUGHT IN GOVERNMENT’S CROSS HAIR fter being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald case last year and facing heat in parliament for his al- leged anti-India comments in London, Congress leader is be- ing hauled on coals for his com- ments that “women are still be- ing sexually assaulted” made during his Kashmir leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Delhi Police reached his Tughlaq Road resi- dence on Sunday morning after more than 40 days of the conclu- sion of his long march. Police had taken cognizance of posts on the social media and recently sent a list of questions asking for details of the women who spoke to him so that justice can be given to him. Whether it is his statement made in London allegedly in- sulting the country or during the long march, the govern- ment’s intention is to keep Ra- hul Gandhi and his party on the back foot. To make matters worse for him the BJP has initi- ated a move to get him suspend- ed from parliament. TOP TWEETS A amajwadi Party’s national execu- tive ended its two- day meeting in Kolkata on Sun- day . The choice of Kolkata as venue away from Uttar Pradesh where the party is strong seems strange as West Bengal is not where it be- longs and it does not stand a chance against Trinamool Congress, the BJP and the CPI-M. Also, SP and Trina- mool Congress are working to forge an alliance at the na- tional level and share the in- tent of keeping the Congress out. They would certainly not put up candidates oppo- site each other in Bengal in the parliamentary elections. Any thought of seat-sharing can be dismissed right away as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a miser when it comes to that. Sowhatcouldhavebeenthe reason for this move, and also the decision to not join hands with the Congress party? Two notable developments in re- cent months may have led to this development. The more significant of the two are the comfortablerelationsbetween MamataandtheGovernorCV Ananda Bose. Compared with theacerbicrelationstheChief Minister had with the previ- ous governor Jagdeep Dhankhar there is a sea change. Has Mamata made peacewiththeCentreafterthe Enforcement Directorate and CBI inquiry against her neph- ew Abhishek Banerjee? During the recent Budget session, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attacked Akhile- sh Yadav for allegedly own- ing real estate in London and Australia. If the UP CM could spill the beans on the floor of the House, the investigating agencies must surely be hav- ing a dossier on the SP chief. Are TMC and SP , therefore, driven by fear? IS FEAR THE KEY IN SP-TMC PROXIMITY SP and Trinamool Congress are working to forge an alliance at the national level and share the intent of keeping the Congress out. They would certainly not put up candidates opposite each other in Bengal in parliamentary elections S UNSTABLE NEIGHBOURS: A MAJOR CONCERN FOR EMERGING REGIONAL POWER INDIA urrently India is at the helm of affairs in world fora with a permanent seat in UNSC, Presidencyof ShanghaiCoop- erationOrganisation(SCO)as well as G-20 and important member of BRICS and Indo Pacific Initiative of US. India has emerged as ‘voice of glob- al south’ and has been ac- knowledgedasemergingpow- er of the century by the US, Russia, and their allies. In- dia’s growing importance is evidentastheUSseesIndiaas an important partner for peace in Indo Pacific and the Russians have found their longeststrategicallystanding firmwiththemintheongoing Ukraine conflict. India’s in- ternational geopolitical stat- ure has risen mainly due to stable political environment at home and wider acceptabil- ity abroad. The world’s econo- my has come under the grip of the two-year-old COVID-19 pandemic and has been ad- versely impacted by the Ukraine conflict. But India’s economy (fifth largest in world) has been remarkably resilient to the deteriorating external environment, and strongmacroeconomicfunda- mentals have placed it in good stead compared to other emerging market economies. The growing political stature and economic potential has taken India to a new high in global affairs. India needs to promote regional peace and stability in order to have a strong claim to be a major worldplayerbutcurrentlythe biggest challenge India faces is its unstable neighbours. CURRENT SITUATION IN NEIGHBOURHOOD: INDIA’S PERSPECTIVE Currently barring Bhutan and Bangladesh India’s neighbourhood is facing po- litical and economic turmoil, with countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal facing a long road for recovery while Myanmar and Afghanistan virtually facing global isola- tion. It is in India’s interest to promote regional economic integration, and need to step up role of South Asian Asso- ciation for Regional Coopera- tion (SAARC) in regional co- operation, dialogue, and re- gional economic integration and enhance effectiveness of BIMSTEC. Nepal: Since the abolition of the monarchy , the Himalayan Republic has hardly ever seen politicalstabilityandeconom- ic growth & politicians have been more interested in play- ing India against China for getting economic or infra- structure aid in return. It was with India’s help that Nepal overcame its economic crisis in past and now again the country is on verge of debt trap facing growing unem- ployment and high inflation. India may have to step up as- sistance to make Nepal eco- nomically self-sufficient and counter Chinese influence. Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka is fac- ing political turmoil and un- precedented financial crisis since 2022 mainly attributed to the poor financial policies of all-powerful ruling Raja- paksa family . To emerge from the present economic crisis President Wickremesinghe is seeking support of global fi- nancial institutions like IMF. India on its part has extended four billion dollars aid and has supported the IMF’s pro- posal based on the Debt Secu- rity Analysis. Maldives: There is political flux in the Maldives with the rivalry between President Ibrahim Solih and Speaker MohammedNasheedtouching a new high and the country’s economy still recovering from the brutal impact of the global pandemic.Indiaonitsparthas successfully dealt with “Keep India Out” campaign and de- veloped good bilateral rela- tionswithMaldivesindefence and economic fields. Afghanistan: The resurgent Taliban rule is yet to be rec- ognized by global community including their once-upon-a- time mentor Pakistan and Emirates. India has reopened its operations in Kabul and began the process of re-en- gaging by sending humani- tarian aid. While signalling a long-term commitment to development of Afghanistan, India must draw redlines on the Menace of Extremism and Rights of Minorities and Women. Myanmar: Myanmar is un- der military junta rule with little hope of restoration of democracy in near future. Myanmar is reeling under economic crisis with the pov- erty-ridden public having no say in the affairs of the state. India has friendly relations with Myanmar but its prox- imity to China is a point of concern. India has not sup- ported the UN resolution con- demning Myanmar but has asked Myanmar to respect human rights, fundamental freedom, and rule of law. Pakistan: Pakistan is in mid- dle of worst pollical and eco- nomic crisis as virtually all parties have failed to deliver on governance. Despite Chi- neseassistance, thecountryis rocked by food and fuel short- ages, terror attacks and politi- cal turmoil. Though the LOC with India has seen lesser fir- ing and infiltration in last one year, yet there is no let out on promotingSikhradicalisation in Punjab and targeting inno- cent Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley . The things have wors- ened with a running battle with the Taliban rulers of Af- ghanistan over the Durand Line dispute and accusing the Taliban of supporting Paki- stan terror group Tehreek-e- Taliban.Itsrighttimeforboth India & Pak to mutually initi- ate confidence building meas- ure to mitigate the hostile en- vironment. China: An assertive surge in Chinese economic & diplo- matic involvement in the re- gion is a major point of con- cern. The long-term conflict between the two sides lies in divergent perceptions of each other, long lingering border dispute, the growing power gap where China is emerging as global power challenging the US and India has emerged as regional power. And in geo- political stand-off with Chi- na, importance of maintain- ing positive influence with India’s neighbours cannot be understated. The commonal- ity of stand between India & China on Russo- Ukraine war & successful Modi - Xi Ping summit meets should be fur- ther explored & steps should be taken to normalise bilat- eral relations. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL C The world’s economy has come under the grip of the two-year-old COVID-19 pandemic and has been adversely impacted by the Ukraine conflict. But India’s economy has been remarkably resilient to deteriorating external environment, and strong macroeconomic fundamentals have placed it in good stead COL RAJESH BHUKAR The author is a Post Graduate in International Studies, Alumni of Defense Services Staff College, Wellington and College of Combat, Mhow

They point to both his dress and physical ap- pearance, seen as Laox- ian-like, and some of his policies, which are dif- ferent from India’s pre- vious ones, Mu said. On India’s relations with other major coun- tries, he said, whether it is Russia, the United States, or Global South countries, India can en- joy friendly ties with all of them, which is “very admirable” to some Chinese netizens. “Sotheword‘Laoxian’ reflects the complex sen- timentof Chinesepeople towardModi, combining curiosity , astonishment, and perhaps a dash of cynicism,” Mu wrote. “I have been doing in- ternational media re- ports for nearly 20 years and it is rare for Chi- nese netizens to give a nickname to a foreign leader. Modi’s nick- name stands out above all others. Clearly, he has made an impres- sion on Chinese public opinion,” he said. Besides hosting Chi- nese President Xi Jin- pingandformerPremier Li Keqiang, since he came to power in 2014, Modi also held two rare informal summits with Xi, 69, in Wuhan and lat- er in Mamallapuram near Chennai, which raised expectations of improvementintherela- tions between the two Asian giants. JPC/004/2022-24 Nirmal Tiwari Jaipur:Therearetimes when comes forth an of- ficer, who by his sheer will and brilliant man- agement and adminis- trative skills, changes the direction and condi- tion of a department aboutwhichthegeneral perceptionof thepublic was somewhat differ- ent. While such officers are too few and far be- tween, as of today, one shining example of such an officer is Addi- tional Chief Secretary Dr Subodh Agarwal, who not only changed the image of the Mines and Petroleum Depart- mentbutalsobroughtit to the forefront. The contribution of mining sector has played an im- portant role in the pro- gress of the region in the last two and a half years. Skilled leadership, team spirit, and solid financial and adminis- trativemanagementare the key to success. Ad- ditional Chief Secre- tary of the Mines and PetroleumDepartment, Subodh Agarwal, has ‘reshuffled’ both de- partments. The Mining Department had been hit hard with the blot of illegal mining, but it has now overhauled it- self into the State gov- ernment’s ‘Star Depart- ment’. Agarwal not only stopped the illegal min- ing in the region but under his leadership, a historic campaign was started in the region, which has been going on for 240 days now. Af- ter the Brij Chaurasi case, Agarwal started a campaign to end illegal mining from the root, which uprooted the mining mafia. In these 240 days of the cam- paign, about 4,700 cases were registered, 1,160 FIRs were registered and 723 people were ar- rested, which is a re- cord in itself. The discovery of pre- cious minerals in the subsurface of the re- gion and the prepara- tion of their blocks through their online auction has strength- ened the economy of the region. A record 17 mineral blocks have been auctioned during Agarwal’s tenure. Dis- trict-wise plots of mi- nor minerals are also preparedandauctioned online. By order of the Su- preme Court, gravel mining was closed in the region for about 3 years. Agarwal con- ducted a study of the entire case and pre- pared a road map for strong advocacy in the Supreme Court. This hard work bore great results as legal mining of gravelwasallowedin the region. Due to this, thepublicgotrelief and the government is also getting revenue. Agarwal brought an amnesty scheme for the recovery of old arrears. This has resulted in a revenue of more than Rs 72 crore in just ten months. He prepared a plan for the protection of geo-heritage sites. Thediscoveryof miner- als like potash and rare earth and the rapid de- velopment of their blocks is also the result of careful monitoring andbettermanagement by Dr Subodh Agarwal. Agarwal’s contribu- tion to pipeline projects for cooking gas in Kota and Jaipur, timely com- pletion of refineries and increasing petrole- um revenue will also be remembered forever. On the whole, it can be said that the trust with which the Chief Minister entrusted Dr Subodh Agarwal with theresponsibilityof the Mines Petroleum De- partment, has been proved correct and is a testament to the confi- dence of the CM, as now, the Mines Depart- ment is one of the lead- ing departments in the region in terms of rev- enue generation. YOGA: A SECRET MANTRA TO PREVENT FRAILTY systematic re- view of 33 rand- omized con- trolled trials (RCTs) found that yoga im- proved gait speed and lower extrem- ity strength in inactive older people. However, yoga did not seem to of- fer a benefit for frailty markers over activi- ties like exercise or tai chi. The review is published in the An- nals of Internal Med- icine. IS FRAILTY A COMMON DISEASE OF THE ELDERLY? Older adults have an increased burden of chronic disease, disa- bility , and frailty . Frail- ty affects up to 50 per cent of adults aged 80 years and older, and its prevention and manage- ment are high-priority areas in public health and clinical practice. Yoga may be a preven- tion and management strategy and is already used to improve balance and mobility in older adults. ROLE OF YOGA IN FRAILTY PREVENTION Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School reviewed 33 RCTs comprised of 2,384 participants aged 65 years or older to evaluate the available trial evi- dence on the effect of yoga-basedinterventions on frailty in older adults. The authors analyzed impacts on frailty markers including measures of gait speed, handgrip strength, balance, lower extremity strength and endur- ance, and multi-compo- nent physical perfor- mance measures. The authors found that when compared to education-only or inac- tive control groups, there was moderate evidence that yoga improved gait speed and lower body strength and endurance. The benefits of balance and handgrip strength were less certain. While there was no clear advan- tage for a particular style of yoga, the authors sug- gest clinicians may con- sider recommending Iyengar-based styles, with a home practice, that can be customized for older adult popula- tions. These findings add to the growing literature that yoga plays a role in healthy ageing and frailtyprevention.
