CONCERN OVER RISING CASES OF STUDENTS’ SUICIDE
Gehlot directs

student suicides
pressing con-
cern over the
rising cases of
student suicide in Kota,
Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot on Friday direct-
ed officials to form a
committee to provide
suggestions on prevent-
ing them, Gehlot said.
20 students preparing
for competitive exams in
Kota have died by sui-
cide so far this year, au-
thorities say. Last year,
the figure was 15. Speak-
ing at a review meeting
on suicide cases among
IIT and NEET aspirants
in the coaching hub, the
CM highlighted the bur-
den being put on students
studying in class 9 and
10. Enrolling Class 9 and
10 students in coaching
institutes puts extra bur-
den on them since they
also have to appear for
board exams, Gehlot
said. “You call students
of class 9th and 10th.You
are committing a crime in
a way. It is like as if IIT
is god. As soon as stu-
dents come to coaching,”
he said. The committee,
which will investigate
under the leadership of
IAS Bhavani Singh De-
tha, will report in fifteen
days that at what level
work can be done to pre-
vent suicide. MORE ON P3

in the West
Indies, Team
India now
takes on Ire-
land and then comes the
first of the big challenges
- the Asia Cup. While eve-
ryone expected India to
thrash the weak Windies
side easily, it wasn’t to be
so. India did win the Test
series 1-0 but it was the
white ball leg of the tour
that held greater signifi-
cance ahead of the ODI
World Cup in October and
T20 World Cup in West
Indies next year. Surpris-
ingly, India struggled to
beat the Windies in the
ODI series and worse, they
lost 3-2 in the T20s leaving
a lot of questions unan-
swered even as the clock
ticks away for selecting the
World Cup squad!
Indiahadnotbeenbeaten
by the Windies in Test
matches since 2002 and
kept this unbeaten streak
alive. The 1-0 margin could
easily have been 2-0 but for
rain in the second match. It
was a good outing for most
Indian batters as Rohit and
Kohli regained their form.
Both scored a century a
piece and looked fluent
even though it wasn’t the
sternest of tests for the stal-
warts.Onthebowlingfront,
Mohammed Siraj and Ravi
Ashwin were at the top of
their game and helped India
dominate the series.
The find of the Test se-
ries, however, was Yashas-
vi Jaiswal who produced a
scintillating century on de-
but and also scored a half
century in the second
match. Though his domes-
tic performance was quite
impressive, he shot into
limelight through an excep-
tional IPL season. But
strangely, he wasn’t played
in the ODIs and was kept
out of the first two T20s
games. At a time when In-
dia was looking to test its
bench strength ahead of the
WorldCupandRohit-Koh-
li were rested for the short-
er formats, it was the best
time to play Jaiswal. When
given a chance, he hit a
match winning 84 not out
in the 4th T20 game and
kept his name in contention
for the World Cup squad.
Besides Jaiswal, another
left-handed opener, Ishan
Kishan, played brilliantly,
especially in the One Day-
ers. He hit 3 consecutive
half centuries in the ODIs
and was safe behind the
wickets as well. In the ab-
sence of K.L Rahul, he is a
strong addition to the In-
dian line-up and can bolster
the World Cup team. In
contrast, the popular Sanju
Samson couldn’t live up to
expectations. Though he
hit one classy half-century,
his performance overall
was a tad disappointing -
and the keeper-batsman
slot seems to be settling in
Ishan’s favour.
Unfortunately, India is
still struggling to find their
number 4 and as Rohit
pointed out , this is a posi-
tion that has long been In-
dia’s Achilles heel! In re-
cent years, Shreyas Iyer
had cemented his place at
4 with an ODI average of
46 plus. But his long ab-
sence due to a back injury
and a comeback for the
World Cup still unclear,
has put India in jeopardy.
Suryakumar Yadav has
been given many chances
but has failed to do well in
ODIs. Now, the buzz sug-
gests that if Team India
don’t have Shreyas or Ra-
hul in the middle order,
Virat may be asked to bat
at number 4, by putting
Kishan at the top and Rohit
at number 3.
One of the biggest miss-
es in the series was Shub-
man Gill. He recorded a
string of low scores across
the 3 formats and looked
uncomfortable at the
crease. Gill was the star
player for India early this
year-andhissublimetouch
will be much needed if In-
dia has to go the distance in
theWorld Cup. Meanwhile,
young southpaw Tilak Ver-
ma was the surprise hit of
the T20 series. His fearless
batting enabled Team India
to claw back from 2-0 be-
hind to 2-2 in the series.
While he hasn’t played any
One Dayers, many feel that
he may be included in the
middle order even for the
World Cup!
With India’s top bowlers
recovering from injuries,
Kuldeep Yadav took it
upon himself to lead the
bowling attack. He seems
to be in great rhythm and
is peaking at the right time.
It will be interesting to see
whether India plays the
Kul-Cha jodi (KuldeepYa-
dav-Yuzvendra Chahal) in
the World Cup.
For the moment, all eyes
are focused on India’s
clash with Ireland, one of
the rising teams in world
cricket. Of course, Jasprit
Bumrah will be the centre
of all attention as he re-
turns to national duty after
a long injury lay off. Eve-
ryone in the cricketing fra-
ternity will be closely
watching his progress - for
if Boom Boom can quickly
regain his rhythm, he could
give the Indian bowling at-
tack a cutting edge that
could ensure glory for Ro-
hit and his warriors in the
upcoming ODIWorld Cup.

FOR DESTRUCTION IN
HIMACHAL PRADESH
SOME HOPE, BUT NO
CHANGE ON GROUND
imachal Pradesh is reeling under Nature’s
fury with incessant rains and floods causing
over 70 deaths and massive destruction of
property. As the State struggles to restore normalcy,
an avoidable remark by Chief Minister Sukhvinder
Singh Sukhu has invited angry responses from the
BJP and AAP. The chief minister blamed “Bihari ar-
chitects” for the destruction in the state. “The houses
which are collapsing these days have not gone
through the standards of standards of structural en-
gineering. The migrant architects (masons), whom I
call ‘Bihari architects’, come here and build floor on
floor,” Sukhu said. If the CM is to be believed,
Himachal does not have local masons.
The statement smacks of regional bias. Himachal
may not have masons but must surely be having archi-
tects. And if it does not have a development authority
to keep a check on mindless and indiscriminate con-
struction then the state needs to create one urgently.
There’s a limit to the forbearance of mountains.
H
order talks between India and China may
have failed to resolve the standoff between
the two countries at Depsang Plains and
Demchok in eastern Ladakh, after the bloody skir-
mish in Galwan Valley a few years ago. China has
still not agreed to allow Indian troops to patrol at their
traditional patrolling points in Depsang Plains, which
lie 18 kilometres inside the Indian territory. It was
hoped that China will agree to some level of de-es-
calation and de-induction before Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi and President Xi Jinping meet for the
BRICS summit in
South Africa next

September when Xi

two sides, their first. The joint statement said that
India and China “agreed to resolve the remaining
issues in an expeditious manner and maintain the
momentum of dialogue and negotiations through
military and diplomatic channels”. Both sides agreed
to “maintain peace and tranquility on the ground”.
Platitudes apart, China is almost adamant on main-

threat to India’s territorial interests. Its intentions are
made clear by its refusal to allow Indian troops to
patrol in Depsang Plains. Until then, India can’t
lower its guard.

  • 4. fter a month in the West Indies, Team India now takes on Ire- land and then comes the first of the big challenges - the Asia Cup. While eve- ryone expected India to thrash the weak Windies side easily, it wasn’t to be so. India did win the Test series 1-0 but it was the white ball leg of the tour that held greater signifi- cance ahead of the ODI World Cup in October and T20 World Cup in West Indies next year. Surpris- ingly, India struggled to beat the Windies in the ODI series and worse, they lost 3-2 in the T20s leaving a lot of questions unan- swered even as the clock ticks away for selecting the World Cup squad! Indiahadnotbeenbeaten by the Windies in Test matches since 2002 and kept this unbeaten streak alive. The 1-0 margin could easily have been 2-0 but for rain in the second match. It was a good outing for most Indian batters as Rohit and Kohli regained their form. Both scored a century a piece and looked fluent even though it wasn’t the sternest of tests for the stal- warts.Onthebowlingfront, Mohammed Siraj and Ravi Ashwin were at the top of their game and helped India dominate the series. The find of the Test se- ries, however, was Yashas- vi Jaiswal who produced a scintillating century on de- but and also scored a half century in the second match. Though his domes- tic performance was quite impressive, he shot into limelight through an excep- tional IPL season. But strangely, he wasn’t played in the ODIs and was kept out of the first two T20s games. At a time when In- dia was looking to test its bench strength ahead of the WorldCupandRohit-Koh- li were rested for the short- er formats, it was the best time to play Jaiswal. When given a chance, he hit a match winning 84 not out in the 4th T20 game and kept his name in contention for the World Cup squad. Besides Jaiswal, another left-handed opener, Ishan Kishan, played brilliantly, especially in the One Day- ers. He hit 3 consecutive half centuries in the ODIs and was safe behind the wickets as well. In the ab- sence of K.L Rahul, he is a strong addition to the In- dian line-up and can bolster the World Cup team. In contrast, the popular Sanju Samson couldn’t live up to expectations. Though he hit one classy half-century, his performance overall was a tad disappointing - and the keeper-batsman slot seems to be settling in Ishan’s favour. Unfortunately, India is still struggling to find their number 4 and as Rohit pointed out , this is a posi- tion that has long been In- dia’s Achilles heel! In re- cent years, Shreyas Iyer had cemented his place at 4 with an ODI average of 46 plus. But his long ab- sence due to a back injury and a comeback for the World Cup still unclear, has put India in jeopardy. Suryakumar Yadav has been given many chances but has failed to do well in ODIs. Now, the buzz sug- gests that if Team India don’t have Shreyas or Ra- hul in the middle order, Virat may be asked to bat at number 4, by putting Kishan at the top and Rohit at number 3. One of the biggest miss- es in the series was Shub- man Gill. He recorded a string of low scores across the 3 formats and looked uncomfortable at the crease. Gill was the star player for India early this year-andhissublimetouch will be much needed if In- dia has to go the distance in theWorld Cup. Meanwhile, young southpaw Tilak Ver- ma was the surprise hit of the T20 series. His fearless batting enabled Team India to claw back from 2-0 be- hind to 2-2 in the series. While he hasn’t played any One Dayers, many feel that he may be included in the middle order even for the World Cup! With India’s top bowlers recovering from injuries, Kuldeep Yadav took it upon himself to lead the bowling attack. He seems to be in great rhythm and is peaking at the right time. It will be interesting to see whether India plays the Kul-Cha jodi (KuldeepYa- dav-Yuzvendra Chahal) in the World Cup. For the moment, all eyes are focused on India’s clash with Ireland, one of the rising teams in world cricket. Of course, Jasprit Bumrah will be the centre of all attention as he re- turns to national duty after a long injury lay off. Eve- ryone in the cricketing fra- ternity will be closely watching his progress - for if Boom Boom can quickly regain his rhythm, he could give the Indian bowling at- tack a cutting edge that could ensure glory for Ro- hit and his warriors in the upcoming ODIWorld Cup. IN-DEPTH DON’T BLAME BIHARIS FOR DESTRUCTION IN HIMACHAL PRADESH SOME HOPE, BUT NO CHANGE ON GROUND imachal Pradesh is reeling under Nature’s fury with incessant rains and floods causing over 70 deaths and massive destruction of property. As the State struggles to restore normalcy, an avoidable remark by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has invited angry responses from the BJP and AAP. The chief minister blamed “Bihari ar- chitects” for the destruction in the state. “The houses which are collapsing these days have not gone through the standards of standards of structural en- gineering. The migrant architects (masons), whom I call ‘Bihari architects’, come here and build floor on floor,” Sukhu said. If the CM is to be believed, Himachal does not have local masons. The statement smacks of regional bias. Himachal may not have masons but must surely be having archi- tects. And if it does not have a development authority to keep a check on mindless and indiscriminate con- struction then the state needs to create one urgently. There’s a limit to the forbearance of mountains. H order talks between India and China may have failed to resolve the standoff between the two countries at Depsang Plains and Demchok in eastern Ladakh, after the bloody skir- mish in Galwan Valley a few years ago. China has still not agreed to allow Indian troops to patrol at their traditional patrolling points in Depsang Plains, which lie 18 kilometres inside the Indian territory. It was hoped that China will agree to some level of de-es- calation and de-induction before Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi and President Xi Jinping meet for the BRICS summit in South Africa next week and later in September when Xi visits India for the G-20 summit. The Indian Air Force airlifted around 70,000 troops and 9000 tonnes of tanks and artillery before the 19th round of meeting between corps commanders of the two sides to dem- onstrate that India has the necessary in- frastructure in place to match the Chinese buildup until China agrees to de-induct and reduce deployment. A sliver of hope lay in the statement released jointly by the two sides, their first. The joint statement said that India and China “agreed to resolve the remaining issues in an expeditious manner and maintain the momentum of dialogue and negotiations through military and diplomatic channels”. Both sides agreed to “maintain peace and tranquility on the ground”. Platitudes apart, China is almost adamant on main- taining its force level in eastern Ladakh posing a threat to India’s territorial interests. Its intentions are made clear by its refusal to allow Indian troops to patrol in Depsang Plains. Until then, India can’t lower its guard.
