Gymnastics rings have a history dating all the way back to the 1800's. Adolf Spiel, a German gymnast, first introduced this event to gymnastics and is credited with its start. His original equipment featured triangular handles and rope cables. From there, the event went on to eventually appear in the 1924 Olympic games in Paris, France.

The basic framework of the equipment has remained
the same from Spiel's original set, besides the
handles going to a circular shape. Many different
materials have been used over the years to make the
equipment needed for this event. Materials have
ranged from hemp to steel cables and wicker to wood
handles. The current measurements accepted by the
gymnastics world are 18 cm diameter circular
handles and 300 cm cables placed 50 cm apart.

Skills are always advancing in difficulty, but some
fundamental skills still remain relevant. Skills on this
event that date back to its beginning can still be seen
in performances today. These fundamentals include
holding arms straight in a handstand position or
holding your arms horizontally resembling a cross.
Routines usually consist of a sequence of holds,
swings, and aerial dismounts.

Deductions will be given for any flaw that exhibits
the gymnast lack of body control. Common
deductions on this event are for poor posture and
shaking arms. Also, the handles must appear still at
the end of every skill set. Dismounts can quickly earn
penalties if the gymnast lacks control and fails to
land on their feet. As with any other event, any falls
from the apparatus or during dismount will end in
deductions.
