L3 CMPT Y2 Evaluation final.pptx

  1. 1. L3 Creative Media Production & Technology Year Two Evaluation Template
  2. 2. Evaluation Overview This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects. When using this form it is good practice to: • Use appropriate terminology. • Stay concise and focus on key points. • Evaluate and analyse your statements. • Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made. Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level. Level 3 Extended Diploma Grading Matrix - https://bit.ly/2Jnqj3v
  3. 3. Project Overview In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
  4. 4. What was the theme of your project and what attracted you to it? I chose the theme of fitness due to my recent interest and enjoyment. I wanted to do a challenge to find out how much I could adapt to a test and so I could develop and create a fun and interesting video. I watch a lot of fitness content from big creators on YouTube and id say they're my favorite videos to watch now so they opportunity to make one and document my findings sounded very appealing.
  5. 5. What research did you undertake and how did it help develop your project? A lot of my research was based around similar styles of videos made by big creators on YouTube and other sites. The styles of videos varied as I was unsure at the time of what I wanted to make exactly but through watching these videos I found a style that I thought was achievable, fun and fit the brief. The three styles I looked at were educational, montage and challenge. Educational content was a very convenient option for me as I feel I'm already very knowledgeable about fitness and weightlifting but in terms of video I don’t find it as entertaining. I also felt as if making an educational video on fitness wouldn’t be as fun to watch or make. Montage content is a very fun high paced approach making use of fast transitions and music. Making this style of video was an original idea of mine but I found as I researched more it’d be much harder to follow the brief using this style. I ended up including a small portion of a montage in my final piece as I wanted to test myself and see if I could make a good one and slot it into my video. Challenge video was my final idea as represented in my final product due to how fun it is to make and how interesting it is to watch. The main reason I chose this was the fact anybody could watch it no matter if you were interested in fitness or not.
  6. 6. How did you develop and improve your ideas throughout the project? My research was based on finding a style of video I wanted to make. Once I’d established I wanted to make a research challenge I moved onto the video planning aspect of my project. I had a fairly clear idea of what I wanted to do it was just a matter of drafting story boards and finding what suited my style best. I had a few ideas but, in the end, didn’t stick to my storyboard as I found it to be boring to watch. My idea did rely on a few aspects of which the main is the results of the challenge. I couldn’t exactly pre plan the ending nor the training shots as depending on the day and how busy it is I wouldn’t have an exact plan of what to do. While planning for this may have worked better the style, I went for made the video feel more natural and realistic.
  7. 7. What was the outcome of the project/task? The outcome of my project was a short educational challenge video based around the gym and training arms for 14 days and seeing the results. I’m very satisfied with the outcome of my video and feel its some of the best video work I've done due to the style of editing I decided to adopt and the research I did to make it a reality. Influences came from creators such as Joe Fazer and Alex Eubank as I found these peoples videos to be entertaining to watch with a unique approach to video making.
  8. 8. Personal Response This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
  9. 9. How did you feel about the project before you started? Upon reading the brief I was very exited about this project as I felt it gave you a lot of freedom to look into any topics you want and create a documentary on it. I instantly had a lot of ideas and so was very motivated to begin the research. The option of picking between a fanzine and a documentary was an easy choice for me as I personally enjoy video more as I not only think I’m better at it but I’ve consumed far more information from prior projects doing video, so I have a lot more experience.
  10. 10. What do you think about your project development and how did it help you to refine your idea? I believe my idea was fully solidified during the start of production when I made the introduction and had a very clear vision (with help from planning) as to what I wanted my project to include and look like. My project displays a very clear path and has direction all the way through thanks to my use of voice over and narrative creation early on. The interview further develops the point and as its in the middle of the video it makes the viewer intrigued to find out the reasons and motives behind the challenge.
  11. 11. Did you collaborate on your project or engage contributors, etc? My projects main focus was on my self, but I had help with recording gym footage with a wide range of my friends who also go to the gym on different days. Filming in the gym on my own without the use of a tripod is difficult so if I could go back and change one thing it would be to be more prepared with the personal filming and create a contingency plan incase nobody could turn up. The camera quality was something I was concerned about pre filming due to bringing a camera into the gym being risky with the amount of people and risk of breaking things. With use of color correction, it turned out fine
  12. 12. How did you feel when the project was completed and why? Upon completion I was very happy with my final product. It has direction and a good tempo throughout which gives a smooth and fun watching experience. The filming aspects were difficult given the circumstances which made the reward of finishing it at a high standard way more worth it.
  13. 13. Evaluating the project In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment. An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of the success of the project
  14. 14. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible] • I learnt a new style of editing to what I’m used to which can translate into other pieces of work and benefit my portfolio • I felt my research gave me a very good understanding of what I wanted to make and researching the styles and how to do it meant my final product was of a higher quality than any prior work. • I made us of color grading in a lot of the shots to add atmosphere
  15. 15. What challenges did you face and how did you respond to them? Try and think of at least 3... • My planning wasn’t precise enough in areas such as the storyboard which left me improvising a lot of shots while filming in the gym. • My montage section could include more shots as I feel it’s the same ones repeated • I was unable to bring a camera into the gym with risks of it being stolen or damaged.
  16. 16. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating] I would rate my final piece good as I feel with what I've tried to achieve and the time I've had to achieve it I’ve made a high-quality production piece with a good story and good direction. I believe the technical aspect of my project is also very high as shown by the amount of research I put in. The variety of shots mixed with the overall editing style makes for one of my best projects yet.
  17. 17. How well did your project apply the characteristics and conventions of the medium you worked in? I think the video was less of a conventional style of documentary than that of something you would find on Netflix or any other streaming service. The short production timeframe and shorter format made it harder for me to make a proper documentary with lots of b-role shots. The super fast paced editing style resembles that of a YouTube video style documentary with informative sections.
  18. 18. How did you design appeal to your target audience? The target was 16–24-year-olds so going for a very slow paced and slow build up will result in them losing interest quicker. The quick flashing of image and the voice over effects makes for a high paced video resulting in a more engaged audience. Fitness is growing in population around younger people and has become very common within teens and young adults. I decided when picking this idea that it would make for good content and even people who don’t enjoy fitness can sit back and watch the challenge.
  19. 19. Analysis In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how your decisions informed the project development and the success of the outcome.
  20. 20. In what ways was the overall project a success? I found my video informative and straight to the point. It fit to the brief and tailored to the target audience. The fast-paced editing style meant it was a fun watch and I learnt how to make use of pace in the video using things such as music and photos. Editing in this way allowed me to develop a unique approach and outlook towards future projects.
  21. 21. What elements did not go well and why? I found that my lack of shot planning resulted in a lack of shots actually developed and shot by me. I would have also liked to do more with the project by including different segments and more parts but due to time constraints and the brief stating 3-5 minutes I think it would have gone over.
  22. 22. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember, skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation, time management, communication, etc as well] I found my organizational skills to have developed a lot over this project as my original idea was already very set it gave me ample time to develop and plan out what needed doing when and with who. My production schedule was also very successful as I gave myself set periods to have filmed/edited by. Communication could be improved over the next project as I found during a few of the filming sessions I was going to have people were unable to make it or turn up so planning personnel more should be something I make sure to improve on next time.
  23. 23. What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful? The main message I wanted to display is that anyone and everyone can get into fitness despite age gender or any other reasons. Once you can find a way that’s comfortable and works for you, you should follow and peruse it as getting into fitness and self improvement is one of the best things I've ever done.
  24. 24. What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings? The main pieces of feedback I received were that it looked very professional and that my introduction was the best part of the process. My choice of music was also noted as a ‘good atmosphere setter’ which was intentional. The montage was the place people said I can improve the most by adding more shots, variety and length which I personally do agree with.
  25. 25. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from academic literature and professionals has helped and why? Working to a brief has been one of the best skills I've learnt not only on this project but also the others throughout the two years. I learnt a lot of techniques through using YouTube and other tutorials online which have helped elevate my project and give it a more professional look.
  26. 26. Action Plan This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and identify ways you could develop.
  27. 27. If you were making a similar project for your fmp, what would you do differently? If I could remake this project for my fmp I would like to ideally make it longer and have more detail as I found the limits of the short format to be constraining. This would allow me to have more shot variety and more chance to experiment with different styles of video.
  28. 28. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example, webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications. I intend to develop my practical skills in the long term by gaining a merit in my FMP and progressing onto higher education where I will gain professional practice in a work-place but be taught by professionals in the form of lectures or workshops.
  29. 29. What personal attributes could you develop to ensure you are working at a professional level? I need to focus mainly on time management and sticking to a brief as before this project I found difficulty in working to a client's description and found myself veering off and doing my own thing. With time management I need to be planning more in depth for production elements of my project and making sure what I can produce is achievable in time frame I have to make it. In the same way I also need to make sure I’m not only meeting personal but major deadlines so not handing in work late
