The document analyzes the design elements of various magazine covers and pages. It discusses how colors, images, fonts and layout are used symbolically to represent themes and target audiences. Red, blue, white and other colors on the Taylor Swift magazine cover convey messages about her public image. Images of Taylor Swift and other artists are prominently featured to attract fans and promote role models. Designs use symmetry, direct eye contact and overlapping elements to engage readers visually.
3. It uses very bright colours but emphasis
on blue, red and white. Red represents
joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and
love showing Taylor as a sex symbol that
people should idolise. Light blue is
associated with health, healing,
tranquillity, understanding, and softness
and dark blue has connotations of
knowledge, power and integrity, this
tells the reader that she is very invested
in her job and her singing being a good
role model for the readers making them
want to buy the magazine even more.
White is associated with light, goodness,
innocence, purity, and virginity. It is
considered to be the colour of
perfection. These all show Taylor Swift as
the perfect woman who many people
see as a role model and this tells the
reader by buying this magazine you can
be like her too.
The words fit together well,
looking very symmetrical and
neat with the sans serif font
keeping it looking very modern,
popular in young adults which
are their target audience.
Taylor Swift on the front cover,
with her blonde hair and blueish
eyes stereotypically links to the
ideal woman also including her
prominent lips and slim figure this
will attract not only her fans but
woman who see her and want to
be like her. She is looking directly
to the audience trying to intrigue
the reader and make them feel like
this magazine is for them and that
she is looking at them telling them
to buy the magazine.
This cover I feel focuses on the model more than anything as the text isn’t in the most noticeable
places and aren’t as large as they would be if they wanted all the attention. I feel they use the model
and the bold brand name “NME” to sell this magazine more than the cover lines or anything else.
4. The contents page in contrast
to the cover primarily uses
black and white on the page,
however using the little
colour there is to catch our
eye and bring our attention
to certain places of the page.
For example at the bottom of
the page an advertisement
for Rudimental’s new album
is coloured from the right as
dark red then slowly
converting into green to the
right creating an eye catching
bit of text.
The magazine focuses on Taylor Swift being dominant, in this there are two pictures of her already
making it mostly about her and seeing her, making her the centre of attention. With the “Queen of
everything” line going across both pages linking to the main genre this will intrigue readers as they feel
made to read by Taylor with her direct address. The text apart from the text going along the pages is
quite dull and doesn’t have a lot drawing us it making us focus on the model more than anything again
She is posed quite wild
and unpredictable, her
mid movement shot
shows her liveliness and
that she wants to have
fun, these connotations
make us want to do the
same with her, which is
reinforced by the direct
address telling us that
we should do what she is
doing.
5. Very similar to the contents
page the double page spread
uses black and white as their
main colours and using colours
to make certain things stand
out. Using orange to make
certain things on the page stand
out. Orange has connotations of
enthusiasm, fascination and
happiness. This again makes us
feel like this is expressing who
Taylor is and giving us that
feeling to. The colour mainly is
in the images of Taylor telling us
the same as the Front cover.
It’s a very plain design with very little
contents inside it, mainly as it’s a
magazine for free, this limits the
amount of content we are given so the
page looks very bland, however it does
fit well together and looks very neat
with the fonts also being very plain the
colour attracts us more than the text
itself.
There are two pictures, one of which is
the Editor and he is looking at the
reader with direct address however
this feels more like it is there just so
we can recognise him for the future.
The other picture seems to be a
private look into backstage territory
which will intrigue audiences as it has
connotations of secrecy and knowing
more than u should.
It has very formal language, not
a lot of it either because of the
fact it is free and doesn’t have
as much information.
6.
7. It’s a very hectic design with the cover
lines and the images all overlapping
with each other even the masthead is
covered by the head of the model. This
tells the reader that this magazine is of
importance. The masthead looks
broken and shattered which fits well
with the model who is punching
through it, making us feel that the
model doesn’t care and that he is the
one that we should be watching.
Blue represents knowledge, power,
integrity, and seriousness. This shows the
magazines target audience is mainly
towards men. Used yellow to make
certain cover lines to stand out and
because the colour yellow has
connotations of energy.
The main image directly relates to
the main story, immediately drawing
the reader to what is inside the
magazine
The front cover shows Ben Bruce
punching towards the audience. This
represents how this magazine is one
that you need to read as his fist is
pointing towards the reader who
instantly feels like this magazine is
meant for them.
With words such as “Knockout Blow”
and “Launches” having connotations
of fighting fitting with the boxing
style to this specific magazine. These
words including words like “War”
show off this magazine as being
violent and grabs the reader’s
attention as war instantly makes the
magazine seem more important.
8. The colour on the contents
page again fits with the colour
scheme of the whole magazine
which is blue. Because this
magazine is promoting a fight
which isn’t really happening,
blue symbolises a certain side
we are on, either the red or the
blue corner. This colour
therefore represents fighting in
this specific magazine.
The font is neat and easy to
read so that the reader doesn’t
need to try hard to read the
article, they can just flow
through the words with ease.
The image takes up all of the
first page and a little of the
second leaving the words to
the far right. The designed
looks less like a rock magazine
but more of a boxing review.
This goes back to the theme
of fighting and that an event is
about to happen.
He poses slightly at an angle
looking directly at the
audience (direct address) with
his hands at his chest in a
boxing stance. This sticks with
the main story as it makes the
musician look like a fighter. His
shirt is off showing his tattoos
which the audience will be
intrigued about because rock
is much related to tattoos and
body art for their specific
meanings.
The phrase “Asking Alexandria”
is repeated here which apart from
the yellow puff is the only eye-
catching text of the double page
spread. However it sticks to the
boxing style which makes the text
more intriguing to look at.
9. The colours stick with the colour
scheme of the front cover having its
main colour as blue. Making the
magazine feel professional and that
they are both the same magazine.
They use yellow and black together, to
give you a sense of danger and
warning you about what’s in this
magazine. This is common with the
genre of this magazine, being targeted
at Rock fans, because rock is a violent
type of music making the yellow and
black fit perfectly with the genre.
The “Contents” is 3D with various
objects that would stereotypically be
involved with the genre such as the
skull, which fits with the genre
because rock is linked to death and
violence which are topics very much
linked to rock.
The contents page has one main
image that covers most of the
page pointing towards a side
story, which the contents page
should do to intrigue the reader
to read the whole magazine and
not just the main story.
The main image in the contents
page is a singer on stage
performing. He is in a crouching
position with him holding the
mic to his mouth covering his
bottom part of the face with the
mic and hand. This gives energy
and excitement to the page as
his face looks strained and tired
from putting so much into his
singing. Also his shirt is off
showing his tattoos much like
the other images showing even
though it’s not the main story it
keeps the main story in our
minds.
The words for the contents are very basic and would be seen in any magazine, the
design helps to catch the eyes of the reader rather that the words themselves.
