In a digital society, Digital Co-creation is becoming the norm by blending business expertise, digital technology and eco-systems to shape a different future. Hear how Fujitsu’s MetaArc uniquely enables competitive advantage by providing a complete framework that enables enterprises to digitize with confidence. For you, this means being able to launch new digital services faster and achieve greater overall enterprise agility.
Chief Technology Officer for Cloud Services
Imagine if you could improve productivity, modernise your applications with ease, ensure security of your data and improve the visibility of cost across your organisation with ease.
The Cloud is a real game changer however it is now more about how you deliver than the cloud itself
I believe empowering people with the right attitude is the most essential aspect of digitalisation I believe Digital success is about the idea and customer experience not the technology I believe businesses have a responsibility towards the privacy of your data and this can differentiate I also believe that you must organise differently to deliver at a pace far faster than today
I am the CTO for Fujitsu’s services business in EMEIA. I am responsible for ensuring that Fujitsu accelerates our customers with the knowledge and talent to modernise services and delivery hybrid IT successfully. Over the next 45 minutes I hope to give you some insight from my experience designing digital businesses.
Technology and digitalisation has changed the world and it will never be the same again
The extent of mobile usage, social media and online video is unrecognisable
Data is king causing digital business to be valued in billions …… the impact is more profound still
Look at the Forbes Beauty List today, Zoella is number 1, she is a household name born in the Cloud as a vlogger
In fact the Top 10 are all social media stars. We no longer have supermodels selling beauty products.
Its not just humans benefiting from such a radically different world its also Pets
Jiff the Pomeranian now earns $17,500 per social media post today and that’s growing!
On a more serious note, the evolution of technology now protects human lives like never before.
For example robots and drones are being used to assess the Fukushima nuclear site in Japan
This is a job that would still kill any human irrelevant of the level of protective suits available.
Today is the least technologically dependent day of your life
The evolution of technology drives change faster and in a profoundly more impactful to society than ever before
Focus on Human Centric Innovation has never been more important
More change is on the brink of impacting us with the advent of autonomous vehicles.
How many connected cars are predicted to be on our roads by 2021? 190m or more…..
This shift will change behaviours and be life changing for millennials and generation Z
What really excites me though is that this change is starting with us
Lets look at our radically changed world in a few more numbers
In August 2017 the world had a population total of 7.524 billion
51% of those users were regular internet users (3.819 bn)
There are also 5 billion unique mobile users today and 92 million new users are added every quarter
Another interesting statistic from the Ericsson mobility report is measuring mobile data traffic which is forecasting 7x growth by 2022.
In 2016 this was 8.8 exabytes however this is expected to be 71 exabytes driven by the extent of video of all types
Did you know that Android now has 84.8% market share in the mobile OS market? It is leaps and bounds beyond IOS More interestingly still in March 2017 Windows has now been surpassed by Android for OS install base worldwide.
With that extent of uptake in devices and consumers how do you manage content and consumption of business data on mobiles? Do you have a strategy to manage data leakage to and from employee mobile devices?
Co-existence of traditional and digital native styles of IT is now key to a successful hybrid IT strategy
Today, the customer is more powerful than they have ever been. As we can see customers value honesty and trust more than ever
Compelling digital experiences help with this, enhancing the perception of your brand. You are now competing with the likes of Amazon and Apple across just about every sector in some way!
Deliver a lasting positive customer experience for most requires some fundamental changes to their business.
This often begins with the creation of cross functional teams focussed on enhancing the customer journey. Sometimes this is done with “shock and awe” teams to create impactful change at pace.
For the most digitally mature enterprises it is about integrating partners and services to deliver this exceptionally customer focussed outcome than it is on the technology
The rate of change will only ever accelerate faster than it is today
Connectivity speed and bandwidth Cloud and its commercial model enabling the ability to create with no upfront cost Breakthroughs in some of the worlds biggest challenges by the availability and reduced cost of HPC from the Cloud Evolutions in A.I. and the amount of data (which is ever increasing) to teach traditional models is a huge driver for the next phase of change
Being able to develop new services within hours enables your business to change direction radically
Innovation is now about the idea and delivering a highly personalised experience for your customer
Many technological obstacles are removed, success is now delivered by designing a digital business to operate at pace
Digital leaders are transforming with better user experiences, lower prices, data, and at scale
But this is about your business, building new value and engaging your customers.
This is your opportunity to reimagine your business, starting with your idea but not necessarily your technology
There are multiple facets of designing your digital business; People, Actions, Collaboration, Technology and of course all of these having principles of security and responsibility.
Before we run through the other pillars let explore some of the newer technology trends I hope to prove technology is no longer the barrier, in fact is essential to underpin the real value of digitalisation.
Will will create and then publish an application to the internet from scratch in minutes using Cloud native techniques
The application will be built using API’s, utilise MetaArc accelerators such as the sharing business platform and will all be delivered from Fujitsu’s K5 Cloud.
We will also introduce you to the Playground which we is a free to use service designed to let you learn cloud native applications development
So, lets explore some of the key technology trends in a little more detail then walk through these key facets of digitalisation
The real power of Cloud Native thinking is in the ability to integrate Cloud services from suppliers across the internet to create new solutions quickly using API’s and micro service for which just about ever commodity service function or process already exists in some way.
It is inevitable that the cloud will be the underpinning element of your digital transformation story. The cloud empowers you to create and deliver new experiences anywhere with ease and with minimal investment.
The Cloud has evolved over the past 10 years and is now very different and geared to the needs of developers. Developing services that are able to react to radical changes in demand is really what this is about. Cloud native is a real change from the past of applications built on partially scalable infrastructure.
Cloud native offers benefits in instant and endless scalability paid for aligned to demand making Cloud Native applications typically 50% or more cheaper for most Cloud Foundry and Containers are at the heart of delivering code anywhere and doing so with real gains in manageability. Imagine being able to deploy and manage an application, data or algorithm to a vehicle on the move without having to worry about the infrastructure.
Developers are now freed to create and build your business differentiation rather than worry about infrastructure constraints.
Cloud Native is all about making something instantly available, easy to manage, easy to scale and cost effective.
API’s are the life blood of any digital service. AI, ML, ioT, analytics, and Blockchain are likely to exist in some form across your organisations before long An API is a common language that enables developers and other technologies to exchange information seamlessly API’s effectively enable developers to reduce their development effort and consider what is important in your specific service
API’s are the key enabler for enabling cross department efficiency, in building an ecosystem and enabling your partners to work together seamlessly
There are API’s for just about every common task that exists today meaning that you can integrate and create at a pace profoundly different than yesterday
The API economy refers to these API services being valuable assets and even monetisable, one of our customers estimates that the impact of their API strategy has bought 130m euros of additional revenue per annum.
Having an API strategy aligned to your business growth is now key consideration for most organisations in my experience
Micro-services enable accelerated development by creating building blocks of reusable services Micro-services are a far more scalable way of building applications in an enterprise as the segmentation enables devolved and parallel development to occur
A traditional app is designed in tiers and is scaled using servers, a micro service is a building block equivalent to a function within that application. The benefit is that each can be developed, scaled, replaced, upgraded, improved easily without interrupting other services.
However, operational considerations of adopting micro services are more important than ever. Each service will evolve faster than ever before and there is often a need to tightly couple the developer and operations loop due to the increased integration complexity. Also, consider compliance and regulation when your new digital applications are formed with micro services from across the world and the internet. Supplier management and paying for services that are constantly scaling up and down with demand introduces new levels of unpredictability causing challenges also in financial forecasting
Rather than the pure technology it is more important to consider you will operationalise your new digital services, and operationalise in line with the pace of development and evolution.
In a recent study by the analyst Forester 41% of you are struggling to manage the rate of technology change, the problem is very real and I would anticipate higher than 41% in reality
Its about the idea, not the technology! Re-imagining your business and developing your big idea will need different thinking
Reimagining yourselves will require experience from across your business, partners and even competitors. We call this co-creation and it is best explored with minds that operate within both the business and IT departments.
Organising for success is essential to managing the complexity and also in deliver an amazing user experience. Another element of collaboration is how you build a community and how you engage your customers. An interesting statistic for you…..
Customer success today is hugely complex and enabled by technology however it is really engaging customers that matters. To achieve this data is all important and data drives ever more personalised experiences. Did you know that content generated by a user drives 6.9x higher engagement than brand generated content?
Organisations that offer poor experiences and are not embracing digital engagement channels will struggle to compete. The era of the customer is now.
Driving operational efficiency means modernisation as most organisations have already reaped the benefits of virtualisation or offshoring services.
The next level of efficiency is driven from Automation and AI. Luckily automation and AI are also augmenting your customer experience in an always on society. Note that there is a hidden benefit of automation which is in enhanced security, a topic we will come back to shortly but hugely important as you expose and make systems digitally enabled.
Defining a strong modernisation strategy will guarantee results if done correctly. The extent of pace enabled by Cloud enabled services means modernisation is easier than it has been before. Identifying strong partners that remove the risk of service selection and integration also helps accelerate modernisation and drives immediate results.
That said, changing your IT heritage still requires real commitment. One impactful approach we have seen in driving lasting change is in the use of ‘Shock and Awe’ teams. ‘Shock and Awe’ teams can be used to disrupt service delivery by building new digital experiences. This is best delivered as a short term approach to demonstrate change.
This approach must operate within principles from the outset to a ‘build operate transfer’ method handing back control to a re-skilled re-invigorated delivery organisation.
Empowering people is about changing mind set not only the skill set.
Delivering an engagement and communication programme is an essential early stage activity.
Empowering people also means ensuring that they have the right tools to be more productive.
Look at modern productivity suites and ensure you embrace SaaS but do so securely as to not introduce compliance challenges with GDPR coming.
Nurturing talent and creating an environment for an ever more diverse team is important.
Attitude is everything as it drives aptitude!
Millenials now also form over 30% of the average workforce. Millenials are digital natives and being always on and connected are their norm, they have different expectations on your business.
Generation Z are only 1% today however they promise to be even more digitally native. Generation Z will have even higher expectations having grown accustomed to the seamless augmentation of their knowledge with artificial intelligence.
In the same study for Forester I mentioned earlier 33% of enterprises are struggling with attracting and retaining digital skills.
Offering opportunities to drive meaningful impact will be required to retain top talent.
How will you attract and retain talent in the millennial pool today, and generation Z tomorrow?
We need to ensure that we enable more digital talent rather than placing more people in the digital team
The time to scale your digital business is now!
With the appearance of wannacry and petya earlier this year the increased visibility of threat and with GDPR closer than ever….. security is now a serious board level conversation.
Today, there is a real dichotomy between data privacy and the value of data and how you can leverage and exploit value in a secure manner is a fine art.
How will you manage your organisations data whilst enabling modernisation of your companies process?
How will you use data to get closer to your customers if you have to comply?
Achieving balance is often about ensuring you demonstrate transparency and openness with customers. The customer first strategy pays dividends as you build trust by building a responsible business strategy.
For some of our customers this strategy means that data follows a simple set of rules : Data is deleted when asked, used only with consent, and stored only when needed
How many of your cloud apps are enterprise compliant? How many cloud services do you believe you are using today in your organisation?
Almost every organisations is now using the Cloud - this is nothing new. On average 1,071 cloud services are now used in every business.
How do you ensure your intellectual property is protected? How are you sure you are compliant and able to manage this complexity?
Managing hyper growth in consumer grade cloud adoption requires you to firstly understand the drivers that caused adoption.
Typically assessments offer scary insights in to the reality of your data and compliance risk.
You are exposing data to the digital world which means new controls and approaches to focus on managing data not infrastructure.
Having a robust hybrid IT data protection, management and compliance solution is also an important consideration to ensure you are GDPR ready.
Consider that most SaaS including O365 does not offer true backup and recovery or long retention limits of for your data then you have to look to look at reducing your risk.
Similarly, consider how you can ensure business continuity if the worst was to happen, have you rehearsed scenarios of major internet outages since you started embracing the cloud?
Google, WhatsApp and Facebook all now offer workplace editions of their tools but before you drive adoption consider the terms and conditions carefully.
Facebook as an example stores today in excess of 300 petabytes of user data today, a number that is growing. That equates to 126 e-books per user!!
The power of data today is incredible. This will grow exponentially as AI is introduced to manage video and voice.
Exploiting data can truly transform your business just make sure you secure inside out from the outset. Can you differentiate through being a responsible business supplier?
The world has changed radically and will never be the same again. Technology is changing faster than ever and is no longer the barrier to success
It is all about the idea, having creativity and an organisation shaped to deliver at pace and define an amazing experience for your organisation and your customers
Security must be managed at the core of your data to enable compliance in the cloud and be very careful in what services you are letting your organisation adopt
Data is gold, embrace it, monetise it but be careful you don’t lose it – the penalties in financial terms and reputation are huge and about to get worse with GDPR!
Consider today the least technologically dependent day in your business and personal life
Adopt the cloud, Accelerate using emerging technology, Shape your business to thrive today and Wow your customer tomorrow
Moments : Marketing will build on the concept of moments capturing and promoting great experiences, these will apply to internal IT and the business alike Event driven : A growing style led by IoT but the next evolution of efficiency and agility. Building services as a process Intelligent contracts : Blockchain is still maturing but expect to see the first enterprise BC backed smart contracts to hit us Intelligent Edge : Realtime services with increasing complexity and levels of AI introduce the drive for deploying compute next to the target Intelligent Security : Exposure of Cloud services will grow in focus - it is too easy to introduce risk, you need a automated change guardian! Mixed Reality : Bringing more immersive experiences than AR to date will drive business uptake of IoT driven by efficiency Cloud is just Infrastructure : Will 2018 be the year the Cloud stops being called the cloud and is just the norm for business infrastructure, i hope so... Immersive user interfaces : Voice and audio will be combined with conversational systems to replace traditional hands on interfaces Continuity in the Cloud : Enterprises now use 1,000+ cloud systems. Business continuity, protecting data and how we manage complexity become a focus. Re-focus on maturity : Service processes in a bi modal world are often left behind in the digital business. Early pilot and PoC will shift to industrialisation for back end service
