I wanna design city experience through novel map service. What’s the city experience? I suggest city exploration. For example, going where never to go, discovering unknown places in the city. How I realize city exploration. There are two keywords, make and exchange. first, make:making your own original city maps. your own original map is used cognitive maps, in short maps reflected user’s image of the city second, exchange: sharing favorite places through location based sns
well,what’s cognitive map. Kevin Lynch,city planner, identifies elements which people use to form cognitive representation of cities; landmarks, paths, districts, nodes and edges. This map reflects our own activities and shows our subjective view of the city by emphasizing landmarks, paths, and districts frequently used. In the area of Cognitive Science, "cognitive map" is used as a term of when humans understand the image of an environment. In contrast to accurate maps, cognitive maps is distorted by each person’s preference. Kevin Lynch identifies five elements which people use to form cognitive representation of cities:paths,landmark,districts,nodes,edges. In this work, I focus on three elements. Path: Roads, walkway, transit lines, canals, railroad, etc. are paths through environment on which people may freely assemble, interact and move about. landmarks: Large physical objects,such as buildings, often act as reference points in the environment, for instance Districts: Some areas of a city may have common identifying characteristics along a variety of dimensions including building type, building use, types of inhabitants etc. let me omit the rest.
In Myglobe, cognitive map is a map reflecting the user's individual experiences and the image of the city.paths and landmarks and districts are emphasized like three pictures above.Myglobe generate cognitive maps from user’s position tracking history 1.Routes you take the most often are indicated with a wider line 2. The less often you have taken the route, the thinner the line 3. Buildings you spend more time in appear larger 4. Only routes you have taken are shown on the map which create an image of an island In this step, myglobe created user’s cognitive maps.
These projects are works related generation of emphasized maps. First, automatic generation of tourist maps: this system emphasize streets and landmarks according to their scores evaluated by semantic information from websites second, visualization of position tracking data reflecting user’s activity: this system, emphasize block separated maps according to user’s position tracking history novelty of myglobe first, each elements, buildings, roads, districts are emphasized independently from user’s preference second, myglobe utilize metaphor of islands myglobe also provides map sharing system.
myglobe iPhone application provides novel city experience through three main functions. Location logging: The GPS in the iphone gets the location data, longitude and latitude. Navigation: walking with looking other’s cognitive maps.Users can see their friend’s or stranger’s cognitive maps in each user’s current position. SNS: Sharing friend’s cognitive maps.

Myglobe provides three experience:Exploration, making map, Exchange Favorites. These experience cycle. Exploration: myGlobe stimulate a kind frontier sprits which user wanna go where is out of his cognition because his cognitive map shows where never to go as sea, or frontier. Making map: The more places user go around, his territories expressed as islands will be expanded. Through this experience, user feel as if he brought up his city like sim city. Users also will enjoy putting life logging on the maps. Exchange favorites: users boast favorite places which they got by walking around each other. and discover unknown places, such as nice cafe, nice view of the city etc. These three steps cycle. Exploration makes the maps.
