BACKGROUND
SPARK Fest, in association with Future of Sex and Disruptor’s
Handbook, hosted Asia’s first Sextech Hackathon in Singapore
on May 18, 19, and 20, 2018.
The first Asia sextech hackathon brought together the
region’s leading authorities in sextech from Hong Kong, China,
Australia, the US and Singapore, to inspire, discuss, and
mentor teams as they innovated solutions to a range of issues.
The event provided the opportunity to collaborate and get
involved in the fast growing $30B sextech industry.
The hackathon aimed to hit key objectives such as raising
awareness and catalysing innovation, while encouraging
participation from a diverse range of voices to discover better
solutions to current sexual health and education issues.
“Teams are here to work”, explains Future of Sex, CEO, Bryony Cole. “Here you see them working
through a one page business model designed to bring discipline to the business of sextech”.

THE EVENT
The pre-event briefing saw over 65 participants, mentors and subject
matter experts come together at the exclusive Straits Clan member’s
club to hear stories of lived experience and innovative sextech, and to
learn about the challenges that were set out for the hackathon weekend.
The challenge statements were “pitched” to the assembled audience of
hackers, hipsters, hustlers and humanitarians by the “Challenge Owners”,
and then the participants took the stage and microphone. They had only
30 seconds to lightning pitch their idea and call for team members.
In the chaos that ensued, as team speed dating took place, 9 new teams
emerged. Some had never met before. Some had no idea what to
expect.
Over 80% of the participants had never been to a hackathon before. We
were breaking new ground.
Designed with inclusiveness in mind, Singapore’s sextech hackathon was supported by local
translators who were signing the challenges and pitches in realtime to disability teams.

5. CHALLENGES
THE EVENT
Smile Makers Challenge: How can we make advertising avenues
more accessible for companies that sell adult products, in a
society where this is made near to impossible?
Fempeers Challenge: How can we devise a creative, education
and open platform for both urban and rural areas to spread
awareness & accessibility about these topics thus reducing the
shame and taboos in a consistent manner keeping in mind that
rural areas don’t have access to smartphones.
Future of Sex Challenge: Couples lead busy lives and want to stay
connected. How can we bring couples closer together, encourage
intimacy, through tech?
