• For the vast majority of the city’s 7.8 million population, Cantonese and
English are their first languages.
• Chinese Mandarin is a “learned” language.
• This poses:
• Challenges: learning Mandarin without a native environment
• Opportunities: creates a sizeable language education demands needs to be
addressed.
4. Overview
• Hong Kong is blessed with a world-class education environment and has a
vibrant expatriate communities of significant size.
• Project Feihong has been running a Chinese Mandarin Tutoring Service
since 2008 using internet telephone and online video chat platform.
• There are currently 40 full-time instructors located in one call center in Yanji,
China. Most of the instructors are college educated.
6. Primary International Schools in HK
• The Bureau of Education of the Hong Kong Government conducted a survey
among primary international schools and published a report in 2012. The
market sizing estimate is based on this report.
• There are currently 41 primary international schools, composed of 9 ESF
schools and 32 private schools.
• Including the pre-school programs, these 41 schools provides 20,579 pupils
space and charges tuition at HK$1.8 billion p.a.
• The average tuition is at HK$87,590 p.a. Converting into hourly rate, this is
equivalent to an hourly tuition rate at $70/School hour.
