OTHER INFORMATION: The University Training Program at Ain Shams University
is composed of 1 year during which I rotated for 2 months in each of the following
Departments: - Internal Medicine -Pediatric - Obstetrics and Gynecology - General Surgery
- Neurosurgery - Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine. Ain Shams University is
ranked first in Egypt. Ain Shams University Hospitals were built in 1935 and since then,
they have been expanding enormously in different specialties. ASU has two main
hospitals:El-Demerdash and Specialist Hospitals.
The combined General Hospitals and Specialist Hospital of the University represent the
largest Hospital Complex in the middle east and Africa (>4000 beds). Owing to the unique
location of Ain Shams University Hospitals in central Cairo, it serves over18 million
Cairenian citizens excluding those referred from otherlocations. The training program
entails direct responsibility of patient care under supervision of senior residents and
professors. Also,it includes dealing with common cases, critically ill patients,ICU
rotation, CCU and caring for accidents and emergencies.
Clinical Hematology is a large unit with its own Hemato-pathology laboratory with an
access to do Immunophenotyping, cytogenetics and molecular. It is 42-bed units with an
affiliated 7-bed transplant unit for allo-transplantation. We see a lot of different varieties of
hematology including, AML, ALL, NHL, HCL, Myeloma and rare conditions like PNH
and SAA.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Program (BMT) at King Faisal Specialist Hospital &
Research Centre
is an internationally renowned leader(JCIA accredited) in the blood and marrow
transplantation for more than 23 years including malignant diseases and Lymphomas,
nonmalignant diseases such as Aplastic Anemia and a variety of inherited diseases. To
date, over 2,900 bone marrow transplants have been performed at the Oncology Centre,
which is fully accredited by the National Marrow Donor Program as an unrelated donor
transplant center.
At the opening of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in 1975, cancer
treatment facilities consisted ofa 600 sq. meter area housing, three examination rooms, a
reception and waiting area, a mould room, a simulator and three radiation treatment
machines. The Hospital now enjoys the largest cancer facilities in the Gulf region. An
independent,four-story building of over 7,500 sq. meters accommodates Radiation
Oncology treatment and outpatient areas on the ground floor and outpatient examination
and treatment areas for other Sections on the 2nd and the 3rd floors. There is an
intravenous admixture pharmacy on the 2nd floor and a dispensing outpatient pharmacy on
the 3rd floor. The 56 station chemotherapy treatment areas are divided between the two
floors, with 14 reclining chairs for bolus injections and 14 prolonged infusion beds on each
floor. The 4th floor houses physician offices, the Oncology Data Unit, the Hospital Tumor
Registry, the National Cancer Registry of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the (Arabian)
Gulf Center for Cancer Registration. 46,400 Cancer cases have been registered in the
Hospital Tumor Registry to date.
The Research Unit consists ofdynamic staff of clinical research coordinators, tumor
registrars, progenitor stem cell transplant registry staff and statistician that lends support
for sponsored clinical research as well as helps maintain one of the world’s largest cancer
registries.
