Nicola Paolucci, Atlassian Containers hit the collective developer mind with great force the past two years and created a space of fervent innovation. Now work is moving towards orchestration. In this session we'll cover an overview of the container orchestration landscape, give an introduction to Docker's own tools - machine, swarm and compose - and show a (semi)live demo of how they work in practice.

Docker containers encapsulate everything you need to describe and run a process, but the lifecycle of a process remains the same: it starts, it runs for a while, and then it ends. This talk will demonstrate how to combine Docker with a tool called CRIU to “roll-back” running processes to an earlier state. CRIU, which stands for Checkpoint & Restore in User Space, creates a complete snapshot of the state of a process, including things like memory contents, file descriptors, and even open tcp connections. It can be used for suspending and resuming processes, or live migrating them from one machine to another. Our developer tool, Tonic, uses it to allow developers to change their code in the middle of a program without restarting from the beginning. We’ll show how we use the Docker Remote API to do this in production thousands of times a day.

Riot builds a lot of software. At the start of 2015 we were looking at 3000 build jobs over a hundred different applications and dozens of teams. We were handling nearly 750 jobs per hour and our build infrastructure needed to grow rapidly to meet demand. We needed to give teams total control of the “stack” used to build their applications and we needed a solution that enabled agile delivery to our players. On top of that, we needed a scalable system that would allow a team of four engineers to support over 250. After as few explorations, we built an integrated Docker solution using Jenkins that accepts docker images submitted as build environments by engineers around the company . Our “containerized” farm now creates over 10,000 containers a week and handles nearly 1000 jobs at a rate of about 100 jobs an hour. In this occasionally technical talk, we’ll explore the decisions that led Riot to consider Docker, the evolutionary stages of our build infrastructure, and how the open source and in-house software we combined to achieve our goals at scale. You’ll come away with some best practices, plenty of lessons learned, and insight into some of the more unique aspects of our system (like automated testing of submitted build environments, or testing node.js apps in containers with Chromium and xvfb).

Docker Compose is the last piece of the orchestration puzzle. After provisioning Docker daemons on any host in any location with Docker Machine and clustering them with Docker Swarm, users can employ Docker Compose to assemble multi-container distributed apps that run on top of these clusters. The first step to employing Docker Compose is to use a simple YAML file to declaratively define the desired state of the multi-container app: containers: web: build: . command: python app.py ports: - "5000:5000" volumes: - .:/code links: - redis environment: - PYTHONUNBUFFERED=1 redis: image: redis:latest command: redis-server --appendonly yes This example shows how Docker Compose takes advantage of existing containers. Specifically, in this simple two-container app declaration, the first container is a Python app built each time from the Dockerfile in the current directory. The second container is built from the redis Official Repo on the Docker Hub Registry. The links directive declares that the Python app container is dependent on the redis container. Not that it’s defined, starting your app is as easy as … % docker up With this single command, the Python container is automatically built from its Dockerfile and the redis container is pulled from the Docker Hub Registry. Then, thanks to the links directive expressing the dependency between the Python and redis containers, the redis container is started *first*, followed by the Python container. Docker Compose is still a work-in-progress and we want your help to design it. In particular, we want to know whether or not you think this should be a part of the Docker binary or a separate tool. lthough containers are bringing a refreshing flexibility when deploying services in production, the management of those containers in such an environment still requires special care in order to keep the application up and running. In this regard, orchestration platforms like Docker, Kubernetes and Nomad have been trying to alleviate this responsibility, facilitating the task of deploying and maintaining the entire application stack in its desired state. This ensures that a service will be always running, tolerating machine failures, network erratic behavior or software updates and downtime. The purpose of this talk is to explain the mechanisms and architecture of the Docker Engine orchestration platform (using a framework called swarmkit) to tolerate failures of services and machines, from cluster state replication and leader-election to container re-scheduling logic when a host goes down.
