2. Project Overview
Internship is with the SC State Firefighter’s Association
and as currently planned, the course will be
administered by the SC Fire Academy.
Internship deliverable is a completed course outline on
storyboards for an online course about Roadside
Operations Safety.
The SC Fire Academy has an established history of
successful online course delivery.
3. Background
Fire departments in the state vary in how they address
training on particular topics.
The online courses already developed are being widely
used and meeting a particular need for rural and/or
volunteer departments that have comparatively fewer
training resources.
A training topic previously identified as needed was
Roadside Operations Safety.
4. About the Learners
A 2012 technology-focused survey was
conducted among SC firefighters.
The responses showed that:
o most have some level of postsecondary education,
some with advanced degrees;
o they are frequent users of Windows platform
technology and social media;
o they expressed a preference for blended learning as
a training delivery method; and
o they overall have widespread access to high-speed
internet connections.
5. The Beginning
A subject matter expert group was established before the
internship began.
A collaborative online workspace had been developed
using Basecamp.
A number of potential content resources had been posted
as well as a brief initial outline that identified several major
topics that should be addressed.
6. Objectives and Outcomes
The instructional objectives and learner outcomes were to
come from broad topic areas identified by the SMEs:
o How and why a temporary traffic control zone should be
established at all roadway incidents
o High visibility apparel and channelizing/traffic control
devices
o Onscene emergency lighting
o A best practices summary
