Solar Water Heaters installed at Aseel Retirement House, Lebanon

2. ASEEL MARONITE RETIREMENT HOUSE
Aseel Retirement House is located in Furn El Chibek, it is a residence housing
facility intended for senior citizens. Additional facilities are provided within the
building, including facilities for meals, gathering, recreation, and some form of
health or hospice care. It consists of two buildings, home for 110 elders, 25 nuns,
32 students, and 45 workers.

3. Building 1
Heating System
In the first building, we replaced two 50-years old Chapee Boilers by one brand new
146KW Viessmann boiler, burner and controller, replaced all the corroded pipes by new
very well insulated pipes, installed new exhaust, new pumps, cables… we installed a tile
layer, cleaned the black walls from soot and dirt.

4. Replacing the hot water tanks
We replaced a 500L very corroded hot water tank by two European DHW tanks
1500L each, double enamel coating, 50 mm polyurethane insulation and with a
cleaning flange to clean it annually, we painted the room and built an Aluminum
door so the maintenance team can access the room easily.

5. Installing the Solar System
As per our design to heat water up to 60°C, calculations, and the collectors sizing
by Polysun simulation software, we installed 50 m2 gross area vacuum tube
collectors on roof, black steel piping and rock-wool insulation with jacketing.

In the second building, we also replaced two 50-years old Chapee Boilers by one brand
new 146KW Viessmann boiler, burner and controller, replaced all the corroded pipes by
new very well insulated pipes, installed new exhaust, new pumps, cables…

7. Replacing the hot water tanks
We replaced a 1,000L horizontal very corroded hot water tank by two European
DHW tanks 1500L each, double enameled, 50 mm polyurethane insulation and
with a cleaning flange to clean it annually.

8. Installing the Solar System
As per our design to heat water up to 60°C, calculations, and the collectors sizing
by Polysun simulation software, we installed 50 m2 gross area vacuum tubes
collectors on roof, black steel piping and rock-wool insulation with jacketing.

9. Automation of the 2 systems
When the temperature difference between solar
collectors (T1) and one of the two tanks (T2, T4) reaches
the switch-on temperature (ΔT on) usually 8 degrees the
solar circulation pump is turned on immediately and at
the same time the electromagnetic valve turns to the tank
where asks for heating. According to prior logic, two
tanks T2, T4 are heated one by one. The DHW tank 1 is
heated as a priority. When it reaches its switch off
temperature or when it reaches its maximum storage
temperature, then second-priority tank is loaded. The
cold water inlet of the first tank is the hot water outlet of
the second tank, so we can achieve more stratification
layers, and preserve hot water, to make use of solar
energy to the largest extent.

11. Results
1. Instant continuous supply of hot water and space heating.
2. Reduce the diesel running cost up to 80% annually, and maximize the use of
solar energy.
3. Intelligent Management By adopting the most advanced control system, Solar
energy can not only satisfy the energy request but also make the system running
automatically. The control system is reasonably designed, stable and reliable.
