Expert itineraries and
local tour leaders
It’s all about the experience. Expertly
created itineraries will take you off the
beaten track to fully experience the
culture of each destination. We work
with local tour leaders who are uniquely
placed to add richness and spontaneous
moments to every trip. They’re on hand
to take the hassle out of your travel,
keep you safe and help create lifelong
memories that stand the test of time.
Hand-picked
accommodation
Carefully selected accommodation
which balances comfort with location.
This means you’ll generally stay
in three-star accommodation with
en suite facilities, and you’ll only
sleep in a tent if it’s the best way
to see the stars.
Walking grade to
suit you
We have a walking holiday to suit
everybody, no matter your level of
fitness. From idyllic coastal paths to
epic mountain treks, we grade our trips
from ‘Easy’ through to ‘Challenging to
Tough’ to help you choose the right
one. You’ll find the walking grade listed
in the ‘at a glance’ box on each page.
Small group sizes
Our average group tour size is just
12, which is perfect for meeting
new people and getting to the heart
of our destinations. Group sizes
are determined by each trip.
Loyalty scheme
We like to reward our customers. As
a way of recognising your loyalty,
we offer 5% discount on your fifth
to ninth holidays with us, and 10%
on your tenth and all subsequent
trips. You can use this discount on all
small group trips with Explore, and
can combine it with many of our other
discounts and promotions. We also
have ways to save if you are travelling
in a group or want to recommend
a friend. So once you’ve caught the
travel bug, we make it a little easier
to keep coming back for more.
Responsible travel
We believe travel should change us,
not the world. We aim to always be
welcomed back, for communities
and cultures to benefit and wildlife
to flourish. Of course we also know
that travel impacts the environment
we care about, so we partner with
charities such as Cool Earth to
reduce this. See page 4 for more.

4. Cool Earth
There’s no escaping it – air travel isn’t very green. But after
a lot of research on a complicated subject, we’re proud
to continue to support a leading deforestation charity -
Cool Earth.
Protecting rainforest is one of the most effective actions to
tackle climate breakdown. Cool Earth work with indigenous
communities empowering them to conserve their forest;
keeping CO2 locked in.
Send a Cow
Send a Cow is our long-term charity partner and we’re
thrilled to be working with them.
Set up back in 1988, Send a Cow gives African farming
families the hope and the means to create a sustainable
future from their land. Importantly, Send a Cow also works
to tackle barriers to social development, such as gender
inequality, to help those most marginalised to thrive.
Charities and partners
“Responsible In Everything We Do” is
one of our core values here at Explore.
This includes supporting charities and
projects in the destinations that we visit.
Discover the partners we financially
support below. On top of these, we
sponsor many which our customers
can visit or support whilst on our trips.

5. Water-to-Go
A group of 16 people, on a two-week tour will throw
away between 800-1000 plastic bottles! Water-to-Go’s
refillable filter bottles kill over 99.9% of all microbiological
contaminants in water, including viruses, bacteria, chemicals
and heavy metals. Suitable for any non-salt water source.
No more need for single-use bottles? Genius.

Toilet Twinning
Toilet Twinning are a UK based charity with one
commendable goal – to flush away poverty! This fantastic
charity is raising funds to enable people living in poor
communities to have clean water, a decent toilet, and to
learn about hygiene – a vital combination that prevents the
spread of disease, reduces the number of deaths among
children, and brings hope for the future.

6. What about the logistics?
On nearly all our walking trips your main luggage will be
transported for you, so you’re free to walk with a light
rucksack of just the essentials. We recommend you carry
water, snacks, a camera, a small first aid kit and any extra
clothing or sun protection you might need. On more remote
or challenging treks additional guides are there to assist the
leader and provide support to the group – some have fully
qualified Mountain Leaders while others have support crew
to set up camp and prepare meals. Our expert teams are
there to ensure you can focus on enjoying your trip.
What to expect from
a walking holiday
Nothing gets you closer to a country than walking through it.
Walking is the most natural way to travel, opening up possibilities
for chance meetings and unplanned once-in-a-lifetime moments.
We’ve got trips to suit walkers of all levels and interests,
from leisurely strolls with mesmerising vistas, to challenging
treks that leave you with a real sense of achievement.
As with all our trips, every group is different but the ‘average’ group
consists of roughly half couples and half solo travellers - all sharing
a passion for exploring the world on foot. You’ll always have someone
to keep you company along the route, but you don’t always have to walk
together. Wherever possible your Explore leader will allow everyone
to walk at their own pace, regrouping regularly along the route.
How fit do I need to be?
It depends on the trip you choose. All our walking holidays are
given a grade from ‘Easy’ through to ‘Challenging to Tough’,
and the grade definition should give an indication of how much
preparation you’ll need to do. On our online trip pages you’ll
find a chart showing the daily walk distances and timings and
information on the route including the terrain and ascents and
descents. Generally, no specific training is needed but, to get
the most out of your holiday, you might feel most comfortable if
you’ve got out walking a few times in the lead-up to your trip.
For more information on walking grades, see page 10.

7. What is a Self-Guided
walking trip?
You can set your own pace on a
Self-Guided walking holiday in Europe.
We’ll send you detailed route notes
with maps to follow and transfer
your luggage between night stops.
You choose the date, your travel
companions, and even your start time
and rest stops along the way. This
is our most flexible way to travel.
You’ll find more information about
our Self-Guided trips on page 114.
Will I need to walk every day?
On a typical small-group walking trip we select the very best walks
in a country or region, include any must-see sights along the way and
build in some free time to explore by yourself or simply relax. You’ll be
transported from one destination to the next. Some of our most popular
European trips are Centre-Based. This relaxed style of holiday involves
staying in one place and getting to know the area in more depth. It’s
very flexible and you can choose to do as many or few of the planned
walks as you like. At the other end of the spectrum, we have Point-to-
Point trips where almost the entire journey is covered on foot and you’ll
need to take part in all the walks. See which trips are Centre-Based
or Point-to-Point in the ‘at a glance’ box on each trip page.

Our walks and treks are all graded by difficulty
taking into consideration the daily distances
covered, the terrain, ascents and descents,
climate and altitude. The Trip Notes on our
website contain detailed information about
what to expect to help you choose a trip which
suits your fitness and experience level.
Choosing Your
Walking Holiday
EASY MODERATE MODERATE TO
CHALLENGING
CHALLENGINGEASY TO MODERATE
Good paths, low altitude
and undemanding
terrain. Ideal for those
in good health who
can walk three to five
hours a day with plenty
of non-walking time in
the itinerary. Previous
walking experience
is not necessary.
Expect a mix of easy
and moderate walks
on fairly good paths at
low altitude, with some
demanding ascents and
descents to spice it up
just a little.
With generally good
paths at low altitude
(mainly below 2,500m),
this is best for fit and
active people who can
walk three to seven
hours a day with some
demanding ascents
and descents.
Combining moderate
walks with some
challenging hikes and
demanding treks on
difficult terrain or at
higher altitudes, this is
perfect for fit walkers
who want to challenge
themselves.
Trekking days are
generally between
six to eight hours,
with some long, steep
ascents and descents,
sometimes at high
altitude and on difficult
terrain. A good fitness
level and previous
trekking experience
is recommended.
Difficult terrain often
at high altitudes and
long trekking days
(sometimes over nine
hours). Requires a high
level of fitness and you
should be a confident,
experienced trekker.
