Application process includes the evaluation of the
other applications competing for the same funding.
KATANA brings a platform-based evaluation system for its Open Call 1
that includes Peer-to-Peer (p2p) evaluation, where applicants evaluate
other teams and their pitches.
The novelty of this system is that the Applicant and the Evaluator roles
are shared by the same set of people.

If an applicant tries to skew the evaluation by falsely
ranking good proposals, their applications will be
downgraded by the algorithm automatically.
Applicants will be presented with two applications, and they will rank them.
They will have to state which of the two they find better, but they will not give
marks that could result in skewed results.
Additionally, applicants will be evaluated on the basis of the
quality of their ranking in relation to other applicants.

Practical tips and tricks: How to prepare KATANA video pitch
This presentation highlights the most important aspects of your future video pitch. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words.
We hope that these quick guidelines will boost your creativity so that you could present yourselves in a best possible way to the whole KATANA community.
Why a video pitch? We are all aware that video can be powerful. It resonates with people instantaneously.
We love watching it. One thousand words can be expressed through a single image, now imagine how much you can communicate through a video? Almost 2 million words per minute.
As you have learned from our first presentation, 2 minutes actually matter!
We believe that innovative themes can present themselves and show their passion and vision better through a video pitch than through a lengthy proposal. KATANA follows an agile and a lean startup approach, and provides an opportunity to all applicants to convince the community that their solutions can actually bring value to the market.
Remember – get their attention first, explain fully later.
Have a great opening. Make sure to get people’s attention from the very beginning of your video.
Criteria for evaluation of pitches in the first round of KATANA:
Previous experience and current activities
Understanding of the dynamics of the value chain
Vision for new products/ services
So, let’s see together - How to make a winning video pitch in only 5 easy steps!
„But I don't know how to create an awesome video!" Fear not. Luckily, technology has made it so easy to do this.
You can film an effective video using only your smartphone or camera. You don't need special lighting or sound equipment. You don't even need music - it's distracting.
Your goal is to answer the question and make a storyboard.
Be honest & clear, confident but not cocky. Don’t worry if you aren’t natural on camera: practice in front of a mirror, record yourself with your phone, then watch the video and see how many ums and errs have been made. THEN show your best version for feedback – preferably with people that don’t need to be nice to you…
Imagine you are describing the project to someone that has no prior knowledge – but you are really excited to tell them all about it.
What to focus on?
Impress others how do you understand the dynamics across the agrifood value chain?
This is the core of your video pitch. How does you idea fit into this concept?
What to focus on?
As our mind can only process about 3 pieces of information at a time in short-term memory, outline the 3 most important benefits of your product or service. People always want to know, what’s in it for me? So make it clear how your product or service will benefit the viewer, and how it would bring a value to them or make their life easier.
Reinforce the 3 benefits with short stories, examples, statistics and if possible people's testimonials.
Please do not recite a script written beforehand. Just talk spontaneously as you would to a friend.
Please do not add any background music to your video.
Check Audio: Before submitting the video, you should try playing it yourself, and check that you can hear what you’re saying.
Make shure you video is easy to watch. Don’t shoot your video in dark places.
Shoot your video in english langugue only!
Double check the video length.
Think about your audience. Your idea will be evaluated by other startups/entrepreneurs, don’t forget, they’re just like you! All the details regarding the evaluation process will be available soon!
Make sure we can hear you. Good audio is key. Take your video (or any audio recording) in a quiet space and try to eliminate white noise and static by using the controls in your video editor. If anything is at all unclear, consider using subtitles.
And final step: Upload yout Video Pitch.
It is very easy to upload your video pitch:
Click on the button UPLOAD on YouTube and select „Unlisted“. Your video will be visible only for you and for others if you share link with them.
Go to the KATANA website, click on the botton APPLY HERE. Register. Copy/Paste and share your link from YouTube with other applicants!
Let’s summ up together what is needed to apply for KATANA project
After applaying WHAT IS NEXT?
KATANA proposes an innovative and agile evaluation method for its Open Call 1 that is tailor-made to the needs of SMEs. The method has already been successfully applied, was upgraded for the purpose of KATANA and holds potential to roll out in future EC Calls with similar requirements.
The ranking algorithm takes into account not only the evaluations received by the others, but the competence in evaluating other applicants as well, because it is not only the application, but much more the competencies of the applicants that guarantee future success on the market.
This will allow KATANA to offer its 1st stage supporting services to the most promising teams that market players themselves find as ones with the most potential for future commercialisation.
Within the peer-to-peer evaluation method, there is a specific mechanism in the algorithm that prevents skewed evaluation.
This evaluation methodology is based on the platforms and algorithms that have proved as very reliable, bias-free and agile tools for the evaluation of applications submitted by SMEs at open calls. The algorithm used has an objective to form a ranking according to different criteria in two consecutive rounds. In order to suppress deliberate distortions in the evaluation process intended to boost one's own application, two rankings are produced: one of the applications and the other of the applicants/evaluators and their expertise. The final ranking is a linear combination of the two.
To provide the evaluations, the applicants agree to receive other applicants' video presentations, watch them carefully, and to submit their feedback according to the instructions that will be provided by the KATANA project management team. Applicants also understand that by failing to provide their evaluations of the other applications within the deadline set by the project management team, will automatically have their applications excluded from the KATANA project. The evaluation process will start on March 01, and will last for 30 days, while the amount of evaluations expected to be performed by the applicants will depend on total amount of applications received in the project.
Evaluate other applicants.
Try to join the first 100.
Colaborate with others.
Bet 100.000 euros.
Note to yourselves 2 thinkg:
Don’t forget – First Open Call starts in FIRST DECEMBER!
Don’t miss to shoot your video pitch and upload it until the end of February.
