Due in Week 4 and worth 30 points
Discuss one (1) project where you used a problem-solving
approach to address what turned out to be common-cause
variation, or where you used a process improvement approach to
deal with a special cause.
If you do not have a personal experience that echoes either of
these situations, you may use Internet to search for a case that
reflects either of these situations.
Examples:
· one’s personal investment strategy since 2008
· reducing waiting times at the local hospital or emergency
room
· reducing difficulties trying to connect to a Wi-Fi Internet
provider

1. Describe the experience in the project.
2. What were the solutions used to address the problem?

3. APA formatting was first talked about in a journal article
in 1929. The first written manuscript was
“compiled by psychologists, anthropologists, and business
managers who convened under the
sponsorship of the National Research Council” (American
Psychological Association, 2010, p. xiii). The
idea was to create a standard by which writing would allow for
easier comprehension. The use of APA
was adopted by colleges, particularly in the areas of social and
behavioral sciences. In the twenty-first
century the APA standards have been accepted by more and
more colleges and universities, regardless
of the educational areas of interest. Students writing theses or
dissertations are generally asked to
follow the APA formatting (American Psychological
Association, 2010).
APA formatting is not flexible. The citations must be done
a certain way and the references must be
laid out in a particular manner with no wiggle room. The
purpose of this template is to show students
what is acceptable in APA formatting and will demonstrate how
to cite different types of references.
When writing a paper for this class it is important to note:
· Follow this template when creating your cover page. Make
sure you include a header, as shown.
· Paragraphs must be indented by seven spaces.
· Papers should be double-spaced only (this means no extra

4. spacing between paragraphs)
· NEVER start a sentence with a number unless you are willing
to spell the number out. As an example: WRONG: 27% of the
people said they prefer the opera over concerts. CORRECT:
Twenty-seven percent (27%) of the people said they prefer the
opera over concerts. If the number falls inside the sentence you
do not need to spell it out. Example: When asked, 27% of the
people said they prefer the opera over concerts.
· Always spell out the numbers zero through nine in the text.
WRONG: All 8 people fell ill after the dinner party.
CORRECT: All eight people fell ill after the dinner party.
· Every resource on your reference page must also be cited in
the body of your paper and every resource cited must be on your
reference list.
· All quotations must be cited and include either the page
number the quote came from or, if page numbers are not
available, the paragraph number the quote came from.
· Do no write using contractions (words like don’t, won’t, it’s,
can’t, etc. are unacceptable).
· Do not write in the first or second person (words like I, me,
my, you, we, our, us, etc. are unacceptable).
While when writing papers in APA format one is typically
expected to use headings for each section
of the paper, this class does not have any assignments that
require a student to use headings. If there
should be any exceptions, the student will be notified. Also
when writing a thesis, dissertation, or
scholarly article for a publication, one would be asked to write
an abstract. Abstracts are not
for this class.
There are different ways of citing resources one has used in
either the discussion questions or the

came from.
Citing a resource with a single author: (Smith, 2010)
Citing a quotation from a resource with authors: (Smith, 2010,
p. 326)
Citing a resource with more than two authors: (Smith,
Anderson, Hendricks and Barney, 2013). The first time you cite
this resource you must list all authors. If you cite these authors
again it should be written: (Smith et al., 2013).
Citing a resource written by a group: (University of Minnesota,
2008)
Citing articles without authors, or if the author is listed as
anonymous: (Watch Antenna Company, 2014)
Citing articles without a date: (Feree, n.d.)
Citing a quote from an article that does not have page numbers:
“Four years since winning its first Worst Company tournament,
Comcast’s doubted that the Kabletown Krusher could ever
regain that 2010 form” (Quirk, 2014, para. 3).
The following page is a reference page and should always
be not only the final page of your paper,
but a page of its own.

calories while sleeping. He intends to market this drink to
grossly overweight consumers--20 percent of Americans,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Gary's mother, a doctor, argues that it's unethical to target the
obese--that they are just as vulnerable a target market as
children or the elderly.
Consider the following questions in an essay of 400 - 500
words:
· Based on your research and studies, is Gary targeting a
"vulnerable" market? Why or why not?
· Does the AMA statement of ethics address this issue? How?
· How might the concepts of marketing and sales--and in
particular, differentiating between the two--address this issue?
