• USING THE ACTIVITY SHEET. IDENTIFY OR
LABEL THE PARTS OF THE DIGESTIVE
SYSTEM USING THE WORD BANK WRITTEN
AT THE TOP OF YOUR ACTIVITY SHEET. YOU
WILL BE GIVEN 5 MINUTES TO ANSWER THE
ACTIVITY.
23. • Digestion refers to the breakdown
of food into smaller components
that can be absorbed into the
bloodstream.
-Lipids to fatty acids
-Proteins to individual amino acids
-Carbohydrates into simple sugars
24. DIGESTION
• Phases Include
1. Ingestion
2. Movement
3. Mechanical and Chemical Digestion
4. Absorption
5. Elimination
25. Types of Digestion
• Mechanical (physical)-occurs in the mouth when food is
physically broken up into smaller pieces
• Chew
• Tear
• Grind
• Mash
• Mix
• Chemical-takes place in the gastrointestinal tract when the
digestive enzymes break down the food into small molecules
• Enzymatic reactions to improve digestion of
• Carbohydrates
• Proteins
• Lipids
26. Digestive System Organization
• GastroIntestinal (Gl) tract
• Tube within a tube
• Direct path between organs
• Structures
• Mouth
• Pharynx
• Esophagus
• Stomach
• Small intestine
• Large Intestine
• Rectum
26
27. Mouth
• Teeth mechanically break
down food into small
pieces. Tongue mixes food
with saliva (contains
amylase, which helps break
down starch).
• Epiglottis is a flap-like
structure at the back of
the throat that closes
over the trachea
preventing food from
entering it. It is located
in the Pharynx.
28. EsophaGus
• Approximately 20 cm long.
• Functions include:
1.Secrete mucus
2.Moves food from the
throat to the stomach using
muscle movement called
peristalsis
• If acid from the stomach
gets in here that’s
heartburn.
29. Stomach
29
• J-shaped muscular bag that stores
the food you eat, breaks it down into
tiny pieces.
• Mixes food with Digestive Juices that
contain enzymes to break down
Proteins and Lipids.
• Acid (HCl) in the stomach Kills
Bacteria.
• Food found in the stomach is called
ChymE.
30. Small Intestine
• Small intestines are roughly 7 meters
long
• Lining of intestine walls has finger-like
projections called villi, to increase
surface area.
• The villi are covered in microvilli which
further increases surface area for
absorption.
30
31. PARTS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE
5/30/2023 31
Duodenum -is the first
part of the small i It is
located between the st
part of the small
intestine, or jejunum.
Jejunum. It is the
middle section of the
small intestine and is
about 2 meters long..
Ileum. The ileum is the
last part of the small
intestine.
32. • Nutrients from the food pass into the
bloodstream through the small
intestine walls.
• Absorbs:
• 80% ingested water
• Vitamins
• Minerals
• Carbohydrates
• Proteins
• Lipids
• Secretes digestive enzymes
32
33. Large InTestine
• Also known as COLON
• About 1.5 meters long
• Accepts what small intestines
don’t absorb
• Rectum (short term storage
which holds feces before it is
expelled).
34. PARTS OF THE LARGE INTESTINE
5/30/2023 34
Ascending
Colon
Transverse Colon
Descending
Colon
35. Accessory Organs The Glands
• Not part of the path of food,
but play a critical role.
• Include: Liver, gall bladder,
and pancreas
36. LIVEr
• Directly affects digestion by
producing bile
• Bile helps digest fat
• filters out toxins and
waste including drugs
and alcohol and poisons.
36
37. Gall Bladder
• Stores bile from the
liver, releases it into
the small intestine.
• Fatty diets can cause
gallstones

ingestion
the process of taking food,
drink, or another substance
into the body by swallowing
or absorbing it.

assimilation
excretion
breakdown of food into
smaller components that
can be absorbed into the
bloodstream.
absorption is the process of taking
the digested simple molecules into
bloodstream/lymph from the
intestinal villi.
assimilation is the process of
synthesizing new compounds from
the absorbed molecules.
the process of removing
wastes and excess water
from the body.
