3. Types of Drones
1. Target and decoy – providing ground
and aerial gunnery a target that
simulates an enemy aircraft or
missile.
2. Civil and commercial UAVs –
agriculture, aerial photography, real-
estate, contracting, data collection.
3. Logistics – delivering cargo.
4. Research and development –
improve UAV technologies.
5. Sport racing.

4. Market Trends
• U.S. and Israel dominate UAV global military market.
• Northrop Grumman and General Atomics dominate
commercial manufacturers.
• Leading civil UAV companies:
-- DJI (Chinese) $500m in global sales
-- Parrot (French) $110m
-- 3DRobotics (U.S.) $21m.
• 325,000 civilian drones registered with the U.S. FAA
(Feb 2016) out of an estimated 1 million sold.
• Universities offering drone research and training
programs or drone-based technical and journalism
degrees.

6. Positive Uses of Drones: Civil
• Aerial crop surveys
• Aerial photography (real estate, building sites, stadium inspection, trade show sites)
• Advertising
• Search and rescue
• Power line and pipeline inspection
• Wildlife counting
• Delivery of medical supplies to otherwise inaccessible regions
• Detection of illegal hunting
• Reconnaissance operations
• Cooperative environment monitoring
• Border patrol missions
• Convoy protection
• Forest fire detection and monitoring
• Coordination of humanitarian aid
• Land surveying
• Fire and large-accident investigation
• Landslide measurement
• Illegal landfill detection
• Construction industry (warranty issues high rise building, underneath bridges)
• Crowd monitoring
• Locate missing persons, fugitives, those with dementia

7. Case Study: How contractors use drones
• “Drones can be very helpful for obtaining job site
progress photos, for doing safety checks and for
evaluating warranty issues without putting people in
harm’s way.
• Suppose you have a window leak on the eighth floor of
one of your buildings. You have two choices: You can
bring in a big crane and raise it up to the eighth floor so
a person in the bucket can take a look. Or you can have
a drone with a high definition camera hover outside
the leaky window and send back photos of the
damaged area.
• Drones are a lot faster, cheaper and safer than using
heavy equipment. Same thing for inspecting a tall
smokestack or for looking underneath a suspension
bridge.”

8. Case Study: Elder/End of Life Care
• Cleveland-based Aerial Anthropology uses drones to
give a “virtual escape” to people with terminal illness/
living in hospice aerial shots of childhood hometowns or
favorite vacation spots, one final time.
• A University of Illinois professor received a $1.5 million
National Science Foundation grant to experiment with
drones that can perform simple household tasks, such
as transporting a bottles of medicine.
• Drone classes in Port Charlotte, FL retirement
community helps residents with hand-eye coordination.

9. Case Study: Fitness
• Richard Branson’s Virgin Active uses drones to help
tennis players work on overheads, lobs, etc.
• University of Nevada at Reno researchers are
developing a drone that monitors and guides blind
runners

10. Case Study: Wildlife Research
• Samford University (Ala.) discovered two species of endangered fish in the state’s
waterways with the help of a drone. Drones can reach areas not easily
accessible by boat and can survey the water from a closer distance than a
helicopter.
• Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution uses drones affixed with petri dishes to
collect photographs and breath samples from humpback whales for scientific
research.
