Proposal
1. York College 48357
Hannah Flowers
Title- The Year of Women
Main Area- Journalism and independent publishing
Rationale-
Throughout the two years which have led up to this project, I have learnt many new skills.
Last year, I learnt the basics of InDesign during my print rotation but this year I feel as
though I have more of an understanding of InDesign. This year I have been mainly focusing
on creating print-based projects. This year alone I have created two fanzine layouts which
have needed knowledge on Photoshop and InDesign. Throughout these projects I have
learnt how to create a layout for a fanzine as well as other things. From my most recent
project for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust I learnt how to create textures on Photoshop for the
illustrations. From what I have learnt in the past two years, I hope that I can make a project
which my audience will like as well as creating a project which looks professional.
Project Concept-
From the past few years I have noticed what my strengths are and my weaknesses. From my
first year, it was easy to say that film and video was definitely not my strong point, but print
was. For my previous fanzine project, I created a general feminism fanzine- this featured
history of feminism, influential women and the best feminist books in 2018. I want to carry
on with this idea. When creating my project concept, I found when I was researching
context before even finalising my decision I was still leaning towards interviewing many
different people and linking that to feminism so for my FMP, I am going to create a follow
on from this fanzine instead with the theme of Role models. I wanted to create something
personal to me. My main idea is to interview people all around the world and find their role
models and why this person inspires them. This is going to require a lot of research, but I am
prepared to put in 110% into this project, the research which I will conduct will make this
project more professional and knowledgeable. This fanzine is going to be something which
people won’t have seen before, so I want to create the best articles, drawings and poems
for this project. At the end of the project, I want to look at my work and feel proud, so much
so that I can showcase my project on different websites and maybe even competitions. I
want to aim my fanzine at a female audience aged 16-26, I think this will be a good audience
to appeal to as most of my content will attract this audience more. The group which I want
to appeal to will be of a balanced psychographic and with the social status of BC1C2.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed?
Over the past projects which I have completed, my evaluation has always been a weakness
this project will be different. I want to create a good evaluation, to do this I will complete a
development diary. For the first few weeks of this project I will create a weekly diary but
when it comes to my production at the end of the day I will complete a development diary
on the day and what I have managed to achieve. I want to get some peer feedback as well
during my production period which will help in my evaluation, 4 weeks into my production I
will have a lesson where I will get some peer feedback and improve on any of the feedback
which the audience has stated. This will be good for when I am in my evaluation section as I
can refer back to this feedback. I want to excel myself in my evaluation as before in my
2. other projects this is the section which has brought my grade down. The development diary
will help when I reach my final reflection section as I can refer back to what I struggled with
and how I overcame that. I hope that by doing this process of reflection I can use it in my
future, self-reflection is a skill which I will need at university so if I perfect this it will help me
in the next few years.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Pre-production Proposal and background research
Create a concept for my fanzine and elaborate
more on my audience, expand how I will appeal to
them and what I can do to attract them.
2 Pre-production Research- primary and secondary
Research various existing products- specify why
these will affect my fanzine and why I have chosen
to research these. Research 4 products of each
magazine- contents page, 2 double page spreads
and front cover.
3 Pre-production Research- primary and secondary
Create a survey asking what role models people
have. Once survey has been completed write
summaries on how this has affected the product
which I will make.
3. Look at fanzine events, Teal Triggs book and an
article on fanzines.
Look at production research- what the structure of
a fanzine is like and any costs which will be needed
in my product.
4 Pre-production Experiments
Identify the problems in my production and find
solutions. Write more detail of the problems and
explain why this will affect my audience.
5 Pre-production Experiments
Look at illustrator and try find out how to use it,
Look at using a graphics tablet for the graphics-
explain the process of drawing Obama, explain the
problems and whether or not I will use it.
Look at conducting interviews, look on YouTube
and start learning about how to ask good questions.
6 Pre-production Pre-Production and planning
Create a pagination, flat plans and a style sheet to
create a good plan.
For the style sheet, find different colour themes to
use- use Adobe Colours CC if possible. Add fonts
and illustrations which I can get inspiration from. If
any problems add them into problem solving.
7 Pre-production Pre-Production and planning
Practice creating titles on photoshop, explore the
different colour themes and titles for each article
which will be created.
if I have researched anything else add it into
research PowerPoint.
8 Production Production and reflections
This is the start of production, start off by creating
the articles and illustrations. Conduct most of the
interviews in this week.
9 Production Look at poems on Instagram and get some ideas.

10 Production Start creating titles and layouts of the articles. Put
all the work into an InDesign document for next
week to get peer feedback.
11 Production Draft peer feedback
Receive peer feedback on the Monday and start
correcting any feedback which I agreed to. At the
end of this week print it off if it is all done.
12 Production Go through the first draft and make all the edits,
look at what needs to be completed and finish the
last page. Edit all the illustrations which need to be
completed.
4. 13 Production Edit all the articles, correct spelling mistakes. Print
