1.CABINETRY
A cabinet is a box-shaped piece of furniture with doors and/or drawers for storing miscellaneous
items. Some cabinets stand-alone while others are built in to a
wall or are attached to it like a medicine cabinet. Cabinets are
typically made of wood (solid or with veneers or artificial
surfaces), coated steel (common for medicine cabinets), or
synthetic materials.
Cabinets usually have one or more doors on the front, which
are mounted with door hardware, and occasionally a lock.
A cabinet intended to be used in a bedroom and with several
drawers typically placed one above another in one or more
columns intended for clothing and small articles is called a
chest of drawers. A small bedside cabinet is more frequently
called a nightstand or night table. A tall cabinet intended for
clothing storage including hanging of clothes is called a
wardrobe or an armoire, or (in some countries) a closet if
built-in.

➢BATHROOM CABINETS
A bathroom cabinet (or medicine cabinet) is a cabinet in a
bathroom, most often used to store hygiene products, toiletries,
and medications. They are
usually placed under sinks or
above toilets.
CHARACTERISTICS OF BATHROOM CABINETS
- Bathroom cabinets are essential to storage and organization in a bathroom, and they
often serve as the support for the bathroom sink.
- Vanity cabinets do just this, and often provide two or three drawers and a cupboard for
under-sink storage. They may be capped with almost any countertop material from
laminate to stone.
- Tall cabinets and wall cabinets, built just like their kitchen
counterparts, can provide generous storage for linens and
more.
- Endless possibilities, from custom-made, elegant hardwood
masterpieces to low-priced bargains that you can buy.
- Bathroom cabinet may be either built-in—just like kitchen
cabinets—or freestanding, like a piece of furniture.
- Conventional bathroom vanity cabinets are typically 31 to
33 ½ inches tall and 18 or 21 inches deep. Widths can range
from 24 inches to 60 inches or more.
STANDARD DIMENSIONS OF A BATHROOM CABINETS
A common mistake people make is measuring only the width of the cabinet (from left to right)
but not the depth or height. Standard widths for vanity cabinets are 24”, 30”, 36”, 48”, 60” and
72”, however, you may find some in-between sizes out there. The standard depth of a vanity,
from front to back, is typically between 20”-21”. However, there are narrow depth options
available which are usually 18”. While there isn’t necessarily a standard for vanity height, you
will typically find them in the range of 32”-36” tall.
SECTIONS OF BATHROOM CABINET
➢CHIFFOROBE
A chifforobe, is a closet-like piece of furniture that combines a long space for hanging clothes
(that is, a wardrobe or armoire) with a chest of drawers. Typically, the wardrobe section runs
down one side of the piece, while the drawers occupy the other side. It may have two enclosing
doors or have the drawer fronts exposed and a separate door for the hanging space.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CHIFFOROBE
- The chifforobe was the perfect combination of storage space and was also transportable,
unlike traditional closets.
- In one combined unit the chifforobe offered a tall
closet for hanging clothes along with a chest of
drawers or shelves.
- Reduces bed and floor clutter, offers multiple
drawers and compartments to keep clothing and
accessories off the floor and bed.
- Sometimes offers a spacious cabinet behind its
wood doors that is perfect for housing a
television and entertainment fixtures.
STANDARD DIMENSIONS OF A CHIFFOROBE
➢HUTCH
The term is now usually used to describe a set of shelves or cabinets placed on top of a lower
unit with a counter and either drawers or cabinets. Hutches are often seen in the form of desks,
dining room, or kitchen furniture.
In the 18th
and early 19th
century, however, the term hutch or
hutch table referred to a table top set onto a base in such a
way that when the table was not in use, the top pivoted to a
vertical position and became the back of a chair or wider
settee. This was a very useful form at a time when many
homes had a large room used for
multiple functions, because it
allowed a large dining table to
swing up and out of the way.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A HUTCH
- Many hutches from recent decades
feature a mirror in the back of the
upper shelving to give the additional
appearance of depth and to better
display the fineries kept within.
- Multipurpose piece of furniture that
can be used almost anywhere in the
house.
- Some hutches even contained built-in
desks with an area cut out for a chair.
- The hutch's lower half has a
countertop, cabinets or drawers.
STANDARD DIMENSIONS OF A HUTCH
Standard dimensions of a Hutch are somewhere near the following:
Height: 34-38 inches
Width: 24 inches
Length: 60 inches
➢WINE RACK
A wine rack is a set of shelves for the organized storage of wine. Wine racks can be built out of
a number of different materials. The size of the rack and the number of bottles it can hold can
vary widely. Wine racks can be located in a winemaker’s professional wine cellar as well as
private homes for personal collections.
1.CHEST OF DRAWERS
A chest of drawers, also called (especially in North American English) a bureau, is a type of
cabinet (a piece of furniture) that has multiple parallel, horizontal drawers usually stacked one
above another.
In American English a dresser is a piece of
furniture, usually waist high, that has drawers and
normally room for a mirror. In British English a
dresser or a Welsh dresser has shelves in the upper
section for storing or displaying tableware.
Chests of drawers have traditionally been made and
used for storing clothing, especially underwear,
socks, and other items not normally hung in or
otherwise stored in a closet. They are usually
placed in a bedroom for this purpose, but can
actually be used to store anything that will fit inside
and can be placed anywhere in a house or another
place.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CHEST OF DRAWERS
- A chest of drawers features one column of drawers that can vary in both number and
size. From space-saving tall and thin models to shorter, wider units, a chest can contain
as few as two drawers and as many as 10 or more.
- Chests of drawers can feature a couple of large,
deep drawers handy for storing bulkier items
such as sweaters or blankets. A combination of
drawer sizes and depths provides a more versatile
storage solution.
- The flexible drawer sizes offer an accessible and
tidy way to house your belongings, from larger
clothing items such as sweaters and jeans to
smaller accessories like jewelry.
- Available in a wide range of finishes, colours and
styles, a chest of drawers can be found to fit both
your decor and storage needs.

2.BOOKCASE
A bookcase, or bookshelf, is a piece of
furniture with horizontal shelves, often in
a cabinet, used to store books or other
printed materials. Bookcases are used in
private homes, public and university
libraries, offices and bookstores.
Bookcases range from small, low models
the height of a table to high models
reaching up to ceiling height. Shelves
may be fixed or adjustable to different
positions in the case. In rooms entirely
devoted to the storage of books, such as
libraries, they may be permanently fixed
to the walls and/or floor.

3.SHELVES
Shelving is one of the most frequently used types of storage furniture. It can be open or in
cabinets with or without doors. Care should be taken to select shelving that is strong enough that
it will not sag from the weight of the items stored on it. It should be easily adjustable so that the
distance between shelves can be changed to suit the
sizes of a variety of items, making maximum use of
storage space. A shelf can be attached to a wall or
other vertical surface, be suspended from a ceiling,
be a part of a free-standing frame unit, or it can be
part of a piece of furniture such as a cabinet,
bookcase, entertainment centre, some headboards,
and so on. Usually two to six shelves make up a unit,
each shelf being attached perpendicularly to the
vertical or diagonal supports and positioned parallel
one above the other.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SHELVES
- The shelves should fit snugly in place so they do not move when
items are placed on or removed from them.
- Shelves within cabinets can be either fixed or sliding. They are
particularly well suited to the storage of fragile items because they
enable items to be seen fully without being touched.
- Shelves are most suitable for the storage of items that are tall and
dimensional and need to be viewed that way, such as woven baskets,
ceramic pots, and models or dioramas.
- They also are suitable for collections of large or heavy items.
- A disadvantage of shelving is that it is not as efficient a use
of space as drawer storage in most situations. Drawers can be
filled more tightly with items than shelves can.

OTTOMAN POUFFES
This particular style footstool usually oozes elegance which makes it more luxurious. They’re
made larger with a deeper padding to give it extra plushiness and held in with metal studs on the
edges. To give it more sophistication, the typical look is metal studs holding the padding in
which creates a diamond pattern across the lush velvet fabric.
Ottoman pouffes may also double as a storage box as the top half that’s the seat can either be
taken off or lifted up, like a lid, to reveal the compartment inside.
If the ottoman isn’t designed as a container, then it’s designed as a bench instead because of its
longer length. Small ottomans will complement certain armchairs but bigger ones can be placed
at the end of the bed as a seating area. In general, ottomans is a style within itself so does not
always have to suit a specific sofa design as it can sit by itself in a room.
STORAGE POUFFES
Anyone wanting a pouffes that doubles up as storage, can also opt for storage pouffes, which
come in a variety of different designs to complement a specific sofa design.
They’re sometimes foldable making it easier to move around and saving on space when not in
use. Those that are foldable tend to be less padded but provide plenty of storage space inside,
while designs that are not foldable will usually have a hinged lid which opens to reveal a smaller
storage space.
Most designs can also be used as extra seats for when guests are round. Storage pouffes can be
expensive or inexpensive, depending on its style and build quality.
POUF OR POUFFE
A pouffe footstool is great for creating a relaxed environment or for a more trendy look due to
its modern style. These are usually priced lower and are constructed from a variety of materials
to create different designs.
Besides its style, this type of footstool is padded all around but it’s sturdy enough to stand on its
base and to provide a very comfortable seat.
The padding tends to be quite thick so it’s comfortable to rest your feet on for hours. Most tend
to be circular with some models being square or rectangular, making them suitable for
complementing a variety of different sofas.
Typically smaller other types of footstools, pouffe footstools take up less space but some
designs can still double up as a table if its surface is flat and by adding a tray on top.

WHY IS A WARDROBE CALLED A WARDROBE?
Because it serves its main purpose of keeping your clothes guarded. The term is from Old North
French warderobe, wardereube (Old French garderobe) "dressing-room, place where garments
are kept," from warder "to keep, guard" + robe "garment". In furniture, a wardrobe is a large
cupboard,
HOW TO BUILD A WARDROBE FRAME?
5 Simple Steps to Build a Wardrobe Storage Cabinet
• Step 1 – Make the Frame. Your first move should be to make a simple frame for...
• Step 2 - Add the Side and Back Pieces. Next, build upon the frame by adding the sides and
back.
• Step 3 – Attach the Doors. After this, you’ll need to do some trimming to prepare the door
opening.
WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF A CLOSET?
Design Help: Closet Dimensions
• Standard Depth Measurements. For reach-in closets, the standard depth is 24 inches.
• Standard Width Measurements. A closet doesn't have a standard width.
• Rod Height. Rod height may vary. The height for skirts, blouses, suits,
• Shelving. Closet shelves should be at least 11 inches deep to accommodate clothing,
BASICS OF BUILDING A WARDROBE
Wardrobe cabinets are similar to closets. The difference being that closets are built into the wall.
Wardrobe cabinets are external. Sometimes referred to as an armoire, wardrobe cabinets are
added to bedrooms or anywhere extra storage is needed for clothing. Other items such as linens,
towels, shoes and coats can be stored in this type of cabinet. Basic wardrobe cabinets are simple,
with options for doors, drawers or open shelves.
DIMENSIONS
Wardrobe dimensions depend on the builder or designer. Most wardrobe cabinets typically are
24 inches deep, but can be as narrow as 18 or even 12 inches in depth. Height also depends on
application, but standard height is usually no more than 72 inches. Width varies anywhere from
between 24 inches to more than 96 inches. There is no real standard for wardrobe cabinet
measurements, other than they fit into the space needed. Once the dimensions are established,
allowances for doors, drawers and hanging space is determined.
MATERIALS
Wardrobe cabinets are considered freestanding. This means they support their own weight even
though they can be screwed to a wall if needed. They have two end jambs, with dividers in the middle
or wherever needed according to the design. Three-quarter-inch hardwood plywood typically is used;
it's strong, finishes smooth and looks nice. Other options include 3/4-inch medium-density-laminate.
This type of composite building material has a slick, plastic coating that doesn't need finishing. It
provides permanent protection for clothing. It's usually bright white in color. Doors, drawers and all
structural jambs can be made from this material. This type of material is preferred by many
homeowners if the wardrobe is not designed for aesthetics and is used only for storage.
DESIGN
Wardrobe cabinets are designed to hold almost anything you have in your bedroom. Basic wardrobe
cabinets typically are designed into three spaces that can be equal or different widths. At least one side
of the wardrobe should be for hanging clothes. If there's room, use both sides on the left and right.
The middle section usually has drawers, but these are optional. Adjustable shelves can be added to the
bottom sections below the hanging clothes, if desired, for shoes or smaller items. If needed, one side
of the hanging section can be divided into full-length adjustable shelving for a lot of shoes. Individual
compartments do not define wardrobe design; they can be anything you need them to be. If you want
open shelving, that's fine. Drawers from top to bottom also are fine, if that's what you need. If you
need your wardrobe only for hanging clothes, then open space works best.
CONSTRUCTION
When you have your design established, cut the pieces using a table saw. Basic construction
methods include mitring the corners for hardwood plywood, if desired. Basic joinery includes
butt joints, which also work fine. Place the two side pieces on their edges to begin. Place the
bottom and top pieces between them. Use a 1 1/4-inch nail gun to join them together, or you can
screw the sides onto the top and bottom using 1 1/4-inch screws and a drill/driver. Place the
vertical dividers in next, and fasten them to the top and bottom. It's necessary to put backs on
cabinets like this. It adds strength and helps seal the cabinet. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch hardboard,
or if the back is exposed, use 1/4-inch hardwood plywood. Apply glue to the edges of the frame
and staple the back to the cabinet using 3/4-inch staples.
SHELVES, DOORS AND DRAWERS
Use adjustable shelves on wardrobe cabinets. Drill 1/4-inch holes on both sides of the area one
inch apart vertically, and one inch from the front and back sides where you wish to install the
shelves. Use special shelf supports designed for this purpose by inserting them into the holes.
The shelves fit on top of the supports. Space them anyway you like. Use side-mount drawer
guides for the drawers. This type of guide screws to the sides of the dividers and doesn't need
braces in the back to support the guide. Doors can be added anywhere on the wardrobe. Use
concealed hinges; this type of hinge mounts to the interior sides of the jambs, and doesn't require
a face frame
TYPES OF WARDROBES
1.HINGED MODULAR WARDROBE
Also called Swing Door Wardrobes, this is the commonest wardrobe type where the shutter is
attached to the carcass of the closet by a hinge. A conventional choice, hinged or swing doors
can be designed as per the layout – L-shaped, triangular, pentagonal.
Hinge Door Wardrobes are the most common and traditional types of wardrobes. It’s very simple
in design and opens with a hinged door. With variety of colours in different textures and finishes,
one can easily find an ideal choice to go with the décor of one’s room. With bedrooms getting
smaller the space required to open the hinge door near a bed, can become a constraint.
Ideal For
Any kind of bare shell space, pre-painted and pre-floored. It is suitable for large and small width
spaces.
Pros
Hinged wardrobes are easy to install, easy to move around and also cheaper when compared to
sliding ones. They can also easily fit into an L-shaped corner or asymmetric spaces
Cons
These wardrobes may look ordinary and need more clearance space to open and close.
2.SLIDING MODULAR WARDROBE
As the name implies, Sliding Door Wardrobes glide horizontally on metal channels fixed to the
top and bottom of the closet. These doors afford plenty of room since they just glide sideways
and don’t open out. They are suitable against a single wall.Sliding are a modern take on the
classic hinge door wardrobe styles. With changing times and having a non-fussy style of
“almirah”, it is an ideal choice with a contemporary look. As per the available width, sliding
door wardrobe can be designed with two, three or four doors. The sliding doors glide smoothly
on a track. For effective use of the bedroom space this is the best choice, as it occupies less
space.
No more pull-out wardrobe-doors on hinges. This enables freer space in the room. The sliding
doors can be made in different types of sliding systems and with a wide variety of materials
creating endless possibilities.
You can also add an overhanging loft to store your large size luggage/ suitcases and other stuff
that is used only once in a while.
Ideal For
Rooms with medium to large widths, pre-painted and pre-floored.
Pros
Sliding wardrobes are space saving, look classy and elegant and need less clearance space when
compared with hinged ones.
Cons
These wardrobes may not fit into asymmetrical rooms, and are comparatively expensive (2-3
times as much as a hinged wardrobe of a similar proportion). The sliding channels can
sometimes not last very long if they are not sturdy.
3.WALK-IN CLOSET
Walk-in wardrobes are the dream wardrobe of most of us but only a lucky few can afford it.
They are the epitome of luxury with massive storage space for clothes and other accessories.
Coupled with organizing accessories they offer a great opportunity for creating a highly
organized space. A well-designed space for everything. For fashion conscious people who love
to collect variety of opulent items it is the ideal choice. A standard walk-in-wardrobe will have
hanging and storage space on all the three sides.
It works best if you have an unused room or a decent amount of spare space which then gets
separated with another pair of doors making it an ideal walk-in-closet.
Despite being an aspirational choice for many (how are we supposed to have extra space in today’s
small apartments), this is a good value option with marginal extra cost.
Walk-in closets are increasingly being preferred for larger apartments and home. They help to
keep the dressing area separate from the main bedroom, provide more storage and are either
closed off by a modular sliding partition or lined with wood to give the feel of a
traditional wardrobe.
Ideal For - Large bedrooms in apartments and bungalows.
Pros - Walk-in wardrobes are classy, afford privacy and prevent spillage of clothing into the
main bedroom.
Cons- These wardrobes are quite expensive to build, and need an additional space in the
bedroom for storage.
4. L SHAPED WARDROBE
L-shaped wardrobes are also known as “Corner Wardrobes”. They can be the ideal solution for
the maximum utilization of a bedroom corner. They utilise the corners of the room which
generally are otherwise wasted space. The sliding doors (most preferred door style) for such fitted
L shaped wardrobe provides great style as well as storage potential, making it a popular choice.
5. WARDROBE WITH A MEZZANINE LOFT
Due to the slanting nature of the mezzanine loft roof, it can be taxing to find appropriate
wardrobe designs for loft or attic rooms.
However, with some clever inventiveness and open door or sliding doors styling one can find the
ideal mezzanine loft storage solution, making great use of the otherwise dead space beneath the
mezzanine loft roof.
6. FREE-STANDING WARDROBES
The first of your choices is the traditional free-standing wardrobe. The biggest of this type of
wardrobe is its versatility. Unlike other types of wardrobes, a free-standing wardrobe can be
easily moved around a room or even a different room or house. These wardrobes come in
different sizes but even the largest can often be a little short of space inside. Another slight
problem is that space needs to be left in front of the wardrobe for opening the doors. Most
commonly free-standing wardrobes come in a wood finish although there are also plenty of
metal, glass and plastic options on the market.
WARDROBE DIMENSIONS
STANDARD DEPTH MEASUREMENTS
For reach-in closets, the standard depth is 24 inches and is used for suits, shirts, dresses, and
pants. The 2-foot depth is required to handle your hanger. For coats and jackets, use a depth of
28 inches.
• Minimum depth 24 inches
• Use a depth of 28 inches for coats
STANDARD WIDTH MEASUREMENTS
A closet doesn't have a standard width. A rule of thumb is to have a minimum of 48 inches or 4
feet of rod length per person who uses the closet. Coats and jackets need between 3 to 4 1/2
inches of width. Men's clothing needs about 2 1/2 inches for every garment while women's
cloths need less since they are generally smaller and wear thinner and tighter clothing. Each
garment needs about the thickness of your hand so you can reach in and take out an item easily.
This will also keep your cloths apart enough so they won't mush together and wrinkle.
• 48 inches of Road length per person
ROD HEIGHT
Rod height may vary. The height for skirts, blouses, suits, shirts and pants has to be at least 45
inches. Floor length dresses needs a height of 72 inches while a street dress needs 63 inches.
Children's cloths need a rod height of 30 inches.
• 45 inches - general adult clothing
• 63 inches - street dresses
• 72 inches - floor length dresses
• 30 inches - children (ages 3-5)
Man's Closet
SHELVING
Closet shelves should be at least 11 inches deep to accommodate clothing, up to 15 inches max.
Deeper shelves provide more storage but increase the possibility of losing items in the back. A
good way is for the first shelf to be 15 inches with 11-inch shelves above will suffice. There
should be at least 3 inches between the rod and the first shelf to be able to remove your hanging
items. Space shelves between 8 and 9 inches apart unless they are for shoes.
• 3 inches between rod and first shelf
• 11 to 15-inch depth for first shelf
• 11-inch depth for second shelf
• 8 to 9 inches between shelves
WALK-IN CLOSETS
Walk in closets come in all sizes. Small ones have a bit of space to walk around, chose cloths,
and possibly change in. Medium sized walk-ins are generally big enough for you to sit in with
some having a full-length mirror. Seating is good for putting on shoes with a bit of space to
move around and change in. The largest walk-ins can be as a big as a bedroom with all the space
you would need to move around, change your cloths, sit down and put on your shoes as well as
fixing your makeup and hair. Whichever size you are designing for, be sure that the space is
suitable for your existing and future wardrobe.

Furniture research -storage, poufs, wardrobes

  • 1. FURNITURE RESEARCH BY- HARSHEEN KAUR DIMPLE BHARTI TUSHAR (JUNE ID 2019) TOPICS COVERED Storage- Harsheen Kaur Poufs- Tushar Wardrobe- Dimple Bharati
  • 2. STORAGE FURNITURE Furniture that helps in decluttering the mess or in simple terms helps us to store things in one way or another. TYPES OF STORAGE FURNITURE 1. Cabinetry - Bathroom Cabinets - Chifforobe - Hutch - Wine Rack 2. Chest of Drawers 3. Bookcase 4. Shelf
  • 3. 1.CABINETRY A cabinet is a box-shaped piece of furniture with doors and/or drawers for storing miscellaneous items. Some cabinets stand-alone while others are built in to a wall or are attached to it like a medicine cabinet. Cabinets are typically made of wood (solid or with veneers or artificial surfaces), coated steel (common for medicine cabinets), or synthetic materials. Cabinets usually have one or more doors on the front, which are mounted with door hardware, and occasionally a lock. A cabinet intended to be used in a bedroom and with several drawers typically placed one above another in one or more columns intended for clothing and small articles is called a chest of drawers. A small bedside cabinet is more frequently called a nightstand or night table. A tall cabinet intended for clothing storage including hanging of clothes is called a wardrobe or an armoire, or (in some countries) a closet if built-in.
  • 4. TYPES OF CABINETS 1.Bathroom Cabinets 2. Chifforobe 3. Hutch 4. Wine Rack
  • 5. ➢BATHROOM CABINETS A bathroom cabinet (or medicine cabinet) is a cabinet in a bathroom, most often used to store hygiene products, toiletries, and medications. They are usually placed under sinks or above toilets.
  • 6. CHARACTERISTICS OF BATHROOM CABINETS - Bathroom cabinets are essential to storage and organization in a bathroom, and they often serve as the support for the bathroom sink. - Vanity cabinets do just this, and often provide two or three drawers and a cupboard for under-sink storage. They may be capped with almost any countertop material from laminate to stone. - Tall cabinets and wall cabinets, built just like their kitchen counterparts, can provide generous storage for linens and more. - Endless possibilities, from custom-made, elegant hardwood masterpieces to low-priced bargains that you can buy. - Bathroom cabinet may be either built-in—just like kitchen cabinets—or freestanding, like a piece of furniture. - Conventional bathroom vanity cabinets are typically 31 to 33 ½ inches tall and 18 or 21 inches deep. Widths can range from 24 inches to 60 inches or more.
  • 7. STANDARD DIMENSIONS OF A BATHROOM CABINETS A common mistake people make is measuring only the width of the cabinet (from left to right) but not the depth or height. Standard widths for vanity cabinets are 24”, 30”, 36”, 48”, 60” and 72”, however, you may find some in-between sizes out there. The standard depth of a vanity, from front to back, is typically between 20”-21”. However, there are narrow depth options available which are usually 18”. While there isn’t necessarily a standard for vanity height, you will typically find them in the range of 32”-36” tall.
  • 9.
  • 10. ➢CHIFFOROBE A chifforobe, is a closet-like piece of furniture that combines a long space for hanging clothes (that is, a wardrobe or armoire) with a chest of drawers. Typically, the wardrobe section runs down one side of the piece, while the drawers occupy the other side. It may have two enclosing doors or have the drawer fronts exposed and a separate door for the hanging space.
  • 11. CHARACTERISTICS OF CHIFFOROBE - The chifforobe was the perfect combination of storage space and was also transportable, unlike traditional closets. - In one combined unit the chifforobe offered a tall closet for hanging clothes along with a chest of drawers or shelves. - Reduces bed and floor clutter, offers multiple drawers and compartments to keep clothing and accessories off the floor and bed. - Sometimes offers a spacious cabinet behind its wood doors that is perfect for housing a television and entertainment fixtures.
  • 12. STANDARD DIMENSIONS OF A CHIFFOROBE
  • 13. ➢HUTCH The term is now usually used to describe a set of shelves or cabinets placed on top of a lower unit with a counter and either drawers or cabinets. Hutches are often seen in the form of desks, dining room, or kitchen furniture. In the 18th and early 19th century, however, the term hutch or hutch table referred to a table top set onto a base in such a way that when the table was not in use, the top pivoted to a vertical position and became the back of a chair or wider settee. This was a very useful form at a time when many homes had a large room used for multiple functions, because it allowed a large dining table to swing up and out of the way.
  • 14. CHARACTERISTICS OF A HUTCH - Many hutches from recent decades feature a mirror in the back of the upper shelving to give the additional appearance of depth and to better display the fineries kept within. - Multipurpose piece of furniture that can be used almost anywhere in the house. - Some hutches even contained built-in desks with an area cut out for a chair. - The hutch's lower half has a countertop, cabinets or drawers.
  • 15. STANDARD DIMENSIONS OF A HUTCH Standard dimensions of a Hutch are somewhere near the following: Height: 34-38 inches Width: 24 inches Length: 60 inches
  • 16. ➢WINE RACK A wine rack is a set of shelves for the organized storage of wine. Wine racks can be built out of a number of different materials. The size of the rack and the number of bottles it can hold can vary widely. Wine racks can be located in a winemaker’s professional wine cellar as well as private homes for personal collections.
  • 17. 1.CHEST OF DRAWERS A chest of drawers, also called (especially in North American English) a bureau, is a type of cabinet (a piece of furniture) that has multiple parallel, horizontal drawers usually stacked one above another. In American English a dresser is a piece of furniture, usually waist high, that has drawers and normally room for a mirror. In British English a dresser or a Welsh dresser has shelves in the upper section for storing or displaying tableware. Chests of drawers have traditionally been made and used for storing clothing, especially underwear, socks, and other items not normally hung in or otherwise stored in a closet. They are usually placed in a bedroom for this purpose, but can actually be used to store anything that will fit inside and can be placed anywhere in a house or another place.
  • 18. CHARACTERISTICS OF CHEST OF DRAWERS - A chest of drawers features one column of drawers that can vary in both number and size. From space-saving tall and thin models to shorter, wider units, a chest can contain as few as two drawers and as many as 10 or more. - Chests of drawers can feature a couple of large, deep drawers handy for storing bulkier items such as sweaters or blankets. A combination of drawer sizes and depths provides a more versatile storage solution. - The flexible drawer sizes offer an accessible and tidy way to house your belongings, from larger clothing items such as sweaters and jeans to smaller accessories like jewelry. - Available in a wide range of finishes, colours and styles, a chest of drawers can be found to fit both your decor and storage needs.

  • 22. 2.BOOKCASE A bookcase, or bookshelf, is a piece of furniture with horizontal shelves, often in a cabinet, used to store books or other printed materials. Bookcases are used in private homes, public and university libraries, offices and bookstores. Bookcases range from small, low models the height of a table to high models reaching up to ceiling height. Shelves may be fixed or adjustable to different positions in the case. In rooms entirely devoted to the storage of books, such as libraries, they may be permanently fixed to the walls and/or floor.

  • 25. 3.SHELVES Shelving is one of the most frequently used types of storage furniture. It can be open or in cabinets with or without doors. Care should be taken to select shelving that is strong enough that it will not sag from the weight of the items stored on it. It should be easily adjustable so that the distance between shelves can be changed to suit the sizes of a variety of items, making maximum use of storage space. A shelf can be attached to a wall or other vertical surface, be suspended from a ceiling, be a part of a free-standing frame unit, or it can be part of a piece of furniture such as a cabinet, bookcase, entertainment centre, some headboards, and so on. Usually two to six shelves make up a unit, each shelf being attached perpendicularly to the vertical or diagonal supports and positioned parallel one above the other.
  • 26. CHARACTERISTICS OF SHELVES - The shelves should fit snugly in place so they do not move when items are placed on or removed from them. - Shelves within cabinets can be either fixed or sliding. They are particularly well suited to the storage of fragile items because they enable items to be seen fully without being touched. - Shelves are most suitable for the storage of items that are tall and dimensional and need to be viewed that way, such as woven baskets, ceramic pots, and models or dioramas. - They also are suitable for collections of large or heavy items. - A disadvantage of shelving is that it is not as efficient a use of space as drawer storage in most situations. Drawers can be filled more tightly with items than shelves can.
  • 30. OTTOMAN POUFFES This particular style footstool usually oozes elegance which makes it more luxurious. They’re made larger with a deeper padding to give it extra plushiness and held in with metal studs on the edges. To give it more sophistication, the typical look is metal studs holding the padding in which creates a diamond pattern across the lush velvet fabric. Ottoman pouffes may also double as a storage box as the top half that’s the seat can either be taken off or lifted up, like a lid, to reveal the compartment inside. If the ottoman isn’t designed as a container, then it’s designed as a bench instead because of its longer length. Small ottomans will complement certain armchairs but bigger ones can be placed at the end of the bed as a seating area. In general, ottomans is a style within itself so does not always have to suit a specific sofa design as it can sit by itself in a room.
  • 31. STORAGE POUFFES Anyone wanting a pouffes that doubles up as storage, can also opt for storage pouffes, which come in a variety of different designs to complement a specific sofa design. They’re sometimes foldable making it easier to move around and saving on space when not in use. Those that are foldable tend to be less padded but provide plenty of storage space inside, while designs that are not foldable will usually have a hinged lid which opens to reveal a smaller storage space. Most designs can also be used as extra seats for when guests are round. Storage pouffes can be expensive or inexpensive, depending on its style and build quality.
  • 32. POUF OR POUFFE A pouffe footstool is great for creating a relaxed environment or for a more trendy look due to its modern style. These are usually priced lower and are constructed from a variety of materials to create different designs. Besides its style, this type of footstool is padded all around but it’s sturdy enough to stand on its base and to provide a very comfortable seat. The padding tends to be quite thick so it’s comfortable to rest your feet on for hours. Most tend to be circular with some models being square or rectangular, making them suitable for complementing a variety of different sofas. Typically smaller other types of footstools, pouffe footstools take up less space but some designs can still double up as a table if its surface is flat and by adding a tray on top.
  • 35. WHY IS A WARDROBE CALLED A WARDROBE? Because it serves its main purpose of keeping your clothes guarded. The term is from Old North French warderobe, wardereube (Old French garderobe) "dressing-room, place where garments are kept," from warder "to keep, guard" + robe "garment". In furniture, a wardrobe is a large cupboard,
  • 36. HOW TO BUILD A WARDROBE FRAME? 5 Simple Steps to Build a Wardrobe Storage Cabinet • Step 1 – Make the Frame. Your first move should be to make a simple frame for... • Step 2 - Add the Side and Back Pieces. Next, build upon the frame by adding the sides and back. • Step 3 – Attach the Doors. After this, you’ll need to do some trimming to prepare the door opening.
  • 37. WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF A CLOSET? Design Help: Closet Dimensions • Standard Depth Measurements. For reach-in closets, the standard depth is 24 inches. • Standard Width Measurements. A closet doesn't have a standard width. • Rod Height. Rod height may vary. The height for skirts, blouses, suits, • Shelving. Closet shelves should be at least 11 inches deep to accommodate clothing,
  • 38. BASICS OF BUILDING A WARDROBE Wardrobe cabinets are similar to closets. The difference being that closets are built into the wall. Wardrobe cabinets are external. Sometimes referred to as an armoire, wardrobe cabinets are added to bedrooms or anywhere extra storage is needed for clothing. Other items such as linens, towels, shoes and coats can be stored in this type of cabinet. Basic wardrobe cabinets are simple, with options for doors, drawers or open shelves. DIMENSIONS Wardrobe dimensions depend on the builder or designer. Most wardrobe cabinets typically are 24 inches deep, but can be as narrow as 18 or even 12 inches in depth. Height also depends on application, but standard height is usually no more than 72 inches. Width varies anywhere from between 24 inches to more than 96 inches. There is no real standard for wardrobe cabinet measurements, other than they fit into the space needed. Once the dimensions are established, allowances for doors, drawers and hanging space is determined.
  • 39. MATERIALS Wardrobe cabinets are considered freestanding. This means they support their own weight even though they can be screwed to a wall if needed. They have two end jambs, with dividers in the middle or wherever needed according to the design. Three-quarter-inch hardwood plywood typically is used; it's strong, finishes smooth and looks nice. Other options include 3/4-inch medium-density-laminate. This type of composite building material has a slick, plastic coating that doesn't need finishing. It provides permanent protection for clothing. It's usually bright white in color. Doors, drawers and all structural jambs can be made from this material. This type of material is preferred by many homeowners if the wardrobe is not designed for aesthetics and is used only for storage. DESIGN Wardrobe cabinets are designed to hold almost anything you have in your bedroom. Basic wardrobe cabinets typically are designed into three spaces that can be equal or different widths. At least one side of the wardrobe should be for hanging clothes. If there's room, use both sides on the left and right. The middle section usually has drawers, but these are optional. Adjustable shelves can be added to the bottom sections below the hanging clothes, if desired, for shoes or smaller items. If needed, one side of the hanging section can be divided into full-length adjustable shelving for a lot of shoes. Individual compartments do not define wardrobe design; they can be anything you need them to be. If you want open shelving, that's fine. Drawers from top to bottom also are fine, if that's what you need. If you need your wardrobe only for hanging clothes, then open space works best.
  • 40. CONSTRUCTION When you have your design established, cut the pieces using a table saw. Basic construction methods include mitring the corners for hardwood plywood, if desired. Basic joinery includes butt joints, which also work fine. Place the two side pieces on their edges to begin. Place the bottom and top pieces between them. Use a 1 1/4-inch nail gun to join them together, or you can screw the sides onto the top and bottom using 1 1/4-inch screws and a drill/driver. Place the vertical dividers in next, and fasten them to the top and bottom. It's necessary to put backs on cabinets like this. It adds strength and helps seal the cabinet. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch hardboard, or if the back is exposed, use 1/4-inch hardwood plywood. Apply glue to the edges of the frame and staple the back to the cabinet using 3/4-inch staples. SHELVES, DOORS AND DRAWERS Use adjustable shelves on wardrobe cabinets. Drill 1/4-inch holes on both sides of the area one inch apart vertically, and one inch from the front and back sides where you wish to install the shelves. Use special shelf supports designed for this purpose by inserting them into the holes. The shelves fit on top of the supports. Space them anyway you like. Use side-mount drawer guides for the drawers. This type of guide screws to the sides of the dividers and doesn't need braces in the back to support the guide.
