2. Sustainable Development Goals
โข Negotiated Over 3 years.
โข Ambitious Roadmap.
โข It lists 17 goals and 169 Targets.
โข UN member states will be expected to use to
frame their agendas and political policies over the
next 15 years.
โข In contrast, the UN Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs), adopted by countries in 2000 to
reduce extreme poverty by 2015, had a mere
eight goals and 18 targets.
2Harveer Singh
3. Drawbacks of MDGs
โข The eight MDGs โ
โ reduce poverty and hunger;
โ achieve universal education;
โ promote gender equality;
โ reduce child and maternal deaths;
โ combat HIV, malaria and other diseases;
โ ensure environmental sustainability;
โ develop global partnerships
โข These goals made no mention of human rights, nor specifically
addressed economic development. While the MDGs, in theory,
applied to all countries, in reality, they were considered targets for
poor countries to achieve, with finance from wealthy states. Every
country will be expected to work towards achieving the SDGs.

Educaton, Cities and Human Settlement

harmonious relation with nature. (Action on
Climate Change, Forest Conservation, Marine
Sustainablity.
โข Global Partnership: Lets all join hands

6. โข Today, India is home to more than 30% of the
global estimate of over 1 billion people who
live in extreme poverty.
โข A single Indian stateโUttar Pradesh (UP)โ
accounts for 8% of the worldโs population
living in extreme poverty.(World Bank
President Jim Kim)
โข If UP were to succeed, the world will be on its
way to achieving SDG One.
6Harveer Singh
7. โข SDGs can only be achieved with the help of
state and local governments, industry and civil
society.
7Harveer Singh
8. โข If the MDGs were relatively successful, it is
because of the domestic efforts of a single
countryโ Chinaโthat pulled more people out
of poverty than any other.
โข Similarly, UN experts opine the overall success
or failure of the SDGs will also be determined
by the results of a single countryโIndia.
