3. Letter from the Minister
Dear All
Easter is over, the highlight of our year passed.
Yet we are challenged to live as Easter People
throughout the year.
What does this mean?
Easter people know that the Lord their God reigns.
Easter people know that Jesus Christ is risen from death and is with us
throughout each day.
Easter people know the presence of the Holy Spirit within their lives,
enthusing and energising them for the gospel.
Easter people live as true Christians, trying their best to be all that
they can be for God each day.
Easter people tell others about their church, invite them along to
services or activities, simply shine God’s love through their actions,
words and deeds each day.
We all need to be Easter people.
And of course, that is easier said than done!
But all that is asked of us is that we try.
Try to be the best we can be for God.
Try to be the best we can be for each other.
Try to remember that our faith is such joy that not sharing it would be
unfair to all.
So, summer comes, there is much happening in the church.
Who will you invite?
This summer, be the Easter people God calls us all to be.
For Jesus’ sake.
Amen.
Sue

Food for Thought
D espite reading Catalyst pretty thoroughly every month it’s only
recently that I have noticed inside the front cover the statements
that ‘We are a member of the United Reformed Church’ and that
‘We believe in Justice and Peace’. Many secular organisations can
and do make the last of those statements – is that all we believe in or
do we not first of all believe in God and that it’s because of His love
for us and our love for Him that we serve him in this way? Perhaps we
can give some thought to how we declare this.

10. Evangelism in the URC
Taken from the first online URC Quarterly Update - Spring 2011
An initiative was announced at all URC spring synods. In March, the 13
synods saw a presentation on the campaign of radical welcome that
the United Reformed Church has been working on for the past two years.
. . . Every URC congregation in Britain has been invited to be part of it,
and has been asked to think and pray long and carefully about their
response to the invitation.
The URC’s campaign is primarily an evangelistic campaign . . . and, for
those URC churches that decide to accept the challenge of becoming
radically welcoming, it will be transformational. The Revd Lucy Berry,
campaign advocate, explains: “It’s a chance for all URC congregations
to change the way church is seen to behave to all those who walk
through their doors – and to develop and transform the life of their
individual church in the process.”
Participating churches will be required to closely examine how they –
corporately and as individuals – welcome people into their fellowship
and how they can learn to be as radically welcoming as Jesus. Mrs
Rominger says: “The power of the campaign is that people will
encounter Jesus, through Jesus shaped churches.”
Ms Berry adds: “One of the extraordinary things about Jesus was His love
and open welcome for those whom the Pharisees and Sadducees saw
as unclean. And yet today people of all kinds know or suspect that they
won’t get a welcome in many churches. Our campaign will tell people
about the churches that can attend where they’ll find a welcome. We
believe this initiative will help the spiritual lives of many, many people
who need not feel excluded or outside of the love of God. We’re really
excited about this campaign and hope that you will be too.”
The next nine months are a time of preparation, inspiration, prayer and
transformation for the URC, as churches begin to sign up and start
moving towards the aim of being radically welcoming. The public
launch will be in early 2012.
More detailed information about the process may be available in your
church and/or synod newsletter . . . If you still have questions after
reading the longer article then please contact Lucy Berry at
lucy.berry@urc.org.uk or on 07715 104361.

11. The Justice and Peace Group.
The J&P Group looks at relevant issues close to home, as well
as those from overseas.
Please consider the plight of the Bromley youth charity JusB.
Basically they are a local charity for young people, providing a lot of
help to youngsters who would otherwise be on the streets, and, I
believe, supported by several Bromley churches. They are running
short of funding and have been offered £25k if they can match that
amount by their own fundraising by the end of June. Otherwise I think
they are likely to close.
Thanks for your help, and Happy Easter
We in the J&P Group are Laurie Hobbs, Barbara Jones, Jim Pearson,
Christine Rees, Judith and David Stoner.
25k appeal
You may have seen JusB in the papers. Here’s the latest.
1) Matched funding extended
Having looked at options for cutting services and doing even more
work in partnership we believe this is a key time for JusB’s future. We
are re-structuring and have lost a staff member, but with £13k raised
towards our £25k target, our donor has agreed to extend his matched
funding offer until June 30th. New monies given or pledged before
then will be doubled by him assuming we raise £25,000.

Women’s Contact Coffee Morning 10.00 am - 12.00
We continue to raise funds for disaster relief causes.
Our next coffee morning will be on 14th of May. Hope to see
you there, and why not bring a friend. Our cakes are to die for!!

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
There will be a stall after the morning services on the 8th & 22nd of May,
and the 5th of June.
The regular items for sale are food and drink - all of very good quality.
Remember that by purchasing Fairtrade goods you are helping to
support communities in the world, and to give those communities a
chance to enjoy a better life for their families - standards which we
may take for granted here in the UK.
Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you.
Richard, Barbara and Helen.

Every year during Christian Aid Week 300,000

UK’s biggest house-to-house collection, reaching millions of people
with messages about beating poverty.
We are one of 20 churches in the Bromley area pooling resources for

responsible for the delivery of gift envelopes to, and collection from,
1300 houses in 28 roads.
We need FOUR new people to help with the house-to-house

15. ........... Continued from page 9
We have money set aside should we need to close down (a legal
requirement), so any money you give really will go to help continue our
work.
2) JusB still needs your help
We’ve seen some great responses to our appeal, but we need more
people, churches, trusts and businesses to act now. Please think of one
way you can help. June will come around soon. Please do something
today to help.
3) If no one helps, what will young people do?
JusB was set up for a reason. Young people were slipping through the
net of services. Hard to reach teenagers need specialist help. As local
government makes cuts and youth unemployment increases our work
will be even more essential. If JusB is not here one has to ask where the
teenagers will go and the implications for Bromley.
4) If you have helped already thank you!
If you have given already please take this letter as an update.
However, if you are yet to help, please consider giving now. Even small
regular gifts will help. Our main need is for regular funds, but if money is
tight please think about whether you can help us in another way.
Perhaps you could hold a cake, book or plant sale? Perhaps you could
do a sponsored event or help us leaflet the area? A business you know
may be able to offer a prize for our May raffle. Everyone can help, and
if we all help, JusB will be saved.
5) For the future
Our target is to get £25k from supporters with the donor matching
another £25k. The total £50,000 would make JusB viable and give us
breathing space to raise more from trusts and other sources. We know
it is not sustainable to have emergency appeals yearly, but we think
that if we are successful with this big push we will be able to secure our
services for young people into the future.
Find out more at www.jusb.org.uk or call 020 8464 2722.
To give now please fill out the donation form, or to discuss giving over
the course of the year please be in touch.
Thank you in advance.
Thank you to everyone who has helped!

Mission statement
Free Tibet stands for the right of Tibetans to determine their own future.
We campaign for an end to the Chinese occupation of Tibet and for the
fundamental human rights of Tibetans to be respected. Founded in 1987,
Free Tibet generates active support through public education about the
situation in Tibet. We are independent of all governments and are
funded by our members and supporters.
Our campaigns
The Jasmine Revolution has put human rights at the forefront of
international news and politics. There is a huge momentum at this
time for giving power back to people who have long been denied it
under repressive regimes. Please join us in using this momentum to
urge British Prime Minister David Cameron to put human rights back
at the heart of UK foreign policy.
Stop Torture in Tibet. British actors lend their voices to Tibetan torture
survivors like Namgyal. On the website, you can read Namgyal's
testimony and watch Dominic West, Juliet Stevenson and David
Threlfall.
Tibet the third pole. Tibet holds the world's third largest store of water, but
the fragile environment is threatened by Chinese development
which also displaces Tibetan nomads.
Political Prisoners. In Tibet, people can be imprisoned simply for sending
email. In addition, over 1,000 remain missing since 2008.
Take action from the US. US support is very important, as regards help
from the US and US policy toward Tibet.
Fly our flag.
The Chinese
government has
banned the Tibetan
national flag from
being flown in the
country. You are
asked to fly the flag
to demonstrate
support of the human
rights movement in
Tibet.

Your Mobile Telephone
Your mobile phone can be a life saver or an emergency tool for
survival.
SECOND Hidden Battery Power
To activate, press the keys *3370# (remember the asterisk). Do this
when the phone is almost dead.
Your mobile will restart in a special way with this new reserve and the
instrument will show a 50% increase in battery life.
This reserve will get re charged when you charge your mobile next
time.
This secret is in the fine print in most phone manuals.
Most people however skip this information without realising.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please pass this along to everyone.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on
to your family and friends.
PIN reversal - An important update
Your editor was contacted by relatives of Tom and Elsie Luzmore who
still read Catalyst.
The story regarding 'reverse Pin protection' is an urban myth, no such
system exists in the UK.
The resources needed to put such a mechanism in operation are too
prohibitive for it to work effectively, and there are associated issues
with it, for instance if your Pin is 6446.
If you do find yourself in such a situation and you enter your Pin
backwards, it will only serve to delay your withdrawal and may incite
frustration from would-be assailants. You should put your personal
safety first and co-operate as best you can.'
A quick check was made on a couple of reliable web-sites which
expose hoaxes and fraud. The findings, in brief, were that in 1994,
Joseph Zingher from Chicago began developing ATM software that
would silently call police if a PIN was entered in reverse. Since then,
Zingher has spent years trying to sell the idea to banks in the United
States without success.
Zingher and others continue to push for the implementation of reverse
pin or similar consumer safety systems at ATMs. The concept is sound,
and such technology may well increase ATM security, discourage
forced withdrawal crime and possibly even save lives, if it was widely
used.

24. Final Thought
The Peace of God
Like a mighty river flowing
Like a flower in beauty growing
Far beyond all human knowing
Is the perfect peace of God
Like the summer breezes playing
Like the tall trees swaying
Like the lips of silent praying
Is the perfect peace of God
Like the morning sun ascended
Like the scents of evening blended
Like a friendship never ended
Is the perfect peace of God
Mission Praise
This year, the image which accompanies Final Thought will be a visual
variation of this scene. The idea is to challenge how we see things,
and to help us appreciate how different people may actually see the
world around them. Editor
