SKILLS
A conceptual design for a sustainable city, based upon the
conference: “Nature and Cities: Urban Ecological Design
and Planning,” University of Texas (27.02.14).
BIOGRAPHY
Hayley is a rural born graduate of the Bachelor of Architectural Design,
commencing a Double Masters of architecture and landscape architecture
at the University of Adelaide. She is recognised as a leader among her
peers; due to her strong self-motivation, her confidence as a mentor of new
students and her commitment to academic excellence. Hayley has developed
her communication and leadership skills, attained from school, where she
received both scholarships and awards in recognition of her commitment and
work ethic. With an ambition to practice sustainable design, Hayley aims to
adapt Australia’s urban environments to become biophilic cities, through the
holistic process of shaping the natural and built environment. Ever-inspired
by her father’s organic farming ideology, Hayley plans to improve the health
and productivity of cities through environmental awareness, and to create
sustainable environments that sustain the life of the communities they serve.
Credentials
Making the most of life’s opportunities has taught Hayley the value of passion
and persistence in her academic, social and recreational endeavours.
Becoming involved with the community, she has developed her leadership
and organizational skills acting as captain for her club netball team, working
in hospitality where she has been involved with training new workers, and
volunteering whilst attending St Mark’s College for their charitable foundations.
Maturity and an eagerness for self-growth have been paramount to Hayley’s
success. Similarly, experiencing new cultures and ways of thinking is
preeminent in both her understanding of the world at a macro scale and
thinking outside the box.
Hayley has travelled internationally throughout Europe and Central America,
visiting landmarks that have broadened her knowledge of architectural
design. This has allowed her to learn new ways to address the world’s
growing challenges of explosive population growth, which is placing pressure
on food systems, sustainability, transport, infrastructure and housing, with
climate change affecting water systems, plant and animal life. Eager to
gain professional experience, Hayley has undertaken work experience at
DesignWELL and Internship at Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL).
Hayley’s design philosophy has been enriched by these experiences, instilling
in her ideals of living in-tune with the land and leading sustainable lifestyles.
This is illustrated in Hayley’s green design for Salisbury’s interchange and
her final year project, where she strengthened Bowden’s existing biodiversity.
Hayley achieved this by encouraging local ecosystems and employing
water sensitive urban design to generate community connection through
a sustainable greenway (Figure 1-4). In both cases, Hayley’s detailed
explorations into context, site, and community have created significant
additions to Bowden’s urban fabric. Both projects were selected for exhibition
to promote the University of Adelaide.
