The summary provides an overview of the SDMS Foundation's 2015 annual report.
The SDMS Foundation supports diagnostic medical sonography through educational programs and research grants. In 2015, it provided over $50,000 in funding for scholarships, certification exam grants, and international medical assistance. A highlight was supporting a cardiac sonographer on a medical mission to Myanmar. The Foundation also launched a three-year, $300,000 fundraising campaign to further its mission.

Myanmar Trip
“I will remember you forever.”
Those were the parting words of Khin Mi Mi, a
woman Katherine Matthews, RDCS, met during
her 2015 Cardiostart International medical
mission to Myanmar.
Financial assistance provided by the SDMS
Foundation allowed Katherine, an adult and
pediatric cardiac sonographer with over 18 years
of experience, to spend two weeks in Myanmar
performing cardiac ultrasounds and reporting her
findings to local and American surgeons traveling
with the medical mission team. Katherine was
also able to share her specialized cardiac training
with local Myanmar cardiologists who perform
their own echocardiograms.
Located in Southeast Asia, Myanmar is a country
in transition. Under military rule and severe
restrictions for more than four decades, Myanmar
has only experienced democratic rule for the past
four years. In many locations, members of the
medical mission team were the first non-Burmese
faces the residents had seen in their lives.
Patients lined up for hours for evaluations
and many were in desperate need of medical
attention. Ultrasound was a very useful diagnostic
tool as it provided real-time imaging with
information about anatomy, function, and blood
flow. Katherine’s knowledge of echocardiography
allowed her to provide useful, diagnostic
information for evaluation and where appropriate,
recommendations for future management.
Like her new friend, Khin Mi Mi, Katherine will
never forget the people of Myanmar and their
gratitude for her participation in the medical
mission.

4. SDMS Foundation Three-Year Campaign
In October 2015, the SDMS Foundation
launched a three-year fundraising campaign
with the theme “Sonography. Our Passion. Our
Future.” and a goal of raising $300,000. The
funds raised will allow the SDMS Foundation to
assist even more recipients and create new ways
to foster professional learning and excellence
by working to improve the field of diagnostic
medical sonography.

5. On your mark . . . get set . . . go!
Indianapolis races cars. Louisville races
thoroughbreds. But the 2015 SDMS Annual
Conference in Dallas, TX offered something even
better . . . an armadillo dash.
Attendees had the opportunity to support their
songraphy specialty and the SDMS Foundation
by placing their “bets” on their favorite armadillo.
Over $20,000 was raised for the SDMS
Foundation which is a new record for the most
amount of money ever raised during an SDMS
Annual Conference. The SDMS Foundation
deeply appreciates the generosity of our
enthusiastic donors and supporting organizations.
