Academic Options
What I would
like to do
After I finish college, I would like to
go to University and be able to do a
creative writing course. This is
because I am very passionate about
creative writing, and it is something
I would like to improve my skills
upon. Also, I am aiming to go to a
local university so then I don’t need
to move out and stress out over
accommodation.
University
option 1:
Sunderland
Since I want to go to a local university, my first option that I would
like to go to is Sunderland University due to it being a high-quality
university along with it not being too far of a distance for me. I
researched into this university and found that they do an English:
Creative and Professional writing course. To get into this course, I
will need to obtain 112 UCAS Tariff points. They accept a maximum
of 6 points from Level 3 Key Skills qualifications.
In this course, I’ll learn from experts in the writing field who will
connect me to creative institutions and networks both regionally
and nationally as I gain more expertise in creative and professional
writing. I’ll have the chance to work with established organisations
as well as develop my portfolio for a varied and fulfilling writing
career and take part in the Sunderland Creative Writing Festival and
the Sunderland Literature Festival.
At each stage of the course, I’ll study modules such as Submitting
Short Fiction and Poetry, Regional Writing, Environmental Writing
and The Business of Writing, alongside English
Literature and English Language core learning to develop essential
knowledge and critical skills.

University option
2: Newcastle
In addition, another local university I am going to apply for is the
Newcastle University due to its location and variety of courses.
Researching into this University, they have a similar course to
Sunderland University’s creative writing course although it seems
there is a higher emphasis on the literature aspect of the course.
The entry requirements for this course is an AAB at A levels.
The English Literature and Creative Writing BA brings together
criticism and creativity, with opportunities to study and create
poetry, prose, film, and drama.
Whether I would be polishing a short story, learning about literature
and postcolonialism, or writing my own poetry in response to an
author from the past, I’ll be working alongside the University’s
world-leading researchers and internationally acclaimed writers.
At the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts, I’ll meet famous
creative artists. Furthermore, I can join workshops on everything
from finding an agent to creating a fantasy language. I can also get
experience in arts management.

University option
3: Northumbria
Moreover, another fairly local university that I researched into and want to
apply to is the Northumbria University based in Newcastle as they also have
a creative writing course.
The course is supposedly a flexible course which will enable me to do both
creative and literature writing at the same time. Learning within a strongly
creative community, I’ll be set for an intellectually stimulating experience
that also develops valuable transferable skills.
In Literature modules I will be covering topics such as Shakespeare to
contemporary fiction. I will produce independent interpretations of texts
and concepts and share my insights with others confidently.
In Creative Writing modules I will hone my craft as a writer with an emphasis
on voice, structure and critical reflection. Workshops will allow me to reflect
on my practice as I develop my own creative projects.
The course combines academic rigour with a concern for employability skills
such as communication and analysis.
To get into this University course, I will need 120 Ucas tariff points along with
having grades 4 and above in Maths and English.

University option
4: York
I would rather additionally research into further away universities to expand
my options. The first thing I noticed whilst researching this university was
that in comparison to the previous universities I researched, there is no
professional writing course that doesn’t predominantly focus on literature
which is not something I want to do. Thus, I had to investigate other courses
that had my peaked my interest.
After further research, I found a course that suited me as the course I would
like to do at this university is BA (Hons) Theatre: Writing, Directing and
Performance course.
Throughout the degree course, the course emphasises a close connection
between theatre practice and its histories, theories, politics and ethics. I’ll
develop keen critical analysis skills alongside my practical work in acting,
directing, playwriting, and design, and explore a broad range of plays and
productions covering theatre’s many pasts and presents.
As I progress, I will hone my skills through increasingly ambitious production
and research projects, gaining the experience and expertise needed.
I’ll be taught by a team of theatre academics and practitioners. Many are
leading researchers in theatre practice, history and theory, and have worked
as professional writers, actors, directors and designers.

University option
5: Chichester
Moreover, another further away university I decided to research into is the
University of Chichester to further expand my options. Unlike the previous
university, this university has a creative writing course heavily focused on
creating novels, screenplays etc.
In this course, I will be able to develop my voice as a writer as I learn from
one of the most established and experienced Creative Writing teams in the
UK.
This course will allow me to explore the creative pleasures and exciting
challenges of developing my work from first idea, to early drafts, through to
the final finished piece of work.
I will learn from there team of practicing and published poets, short story
writers, novelists, dramatists and screenwriters, all of whom have extensive
experience of the industry.
I will have the opportunity to learn, and then specialise in, a wide-range of
creative writing disciplines including: fiction, novels, screenplays and creative
non-fiction.
