  2. 2.  In light of the recent adverse events the spread of novel corona virus humans, the social animals are forced to maintain a strict and complete physical isolation or social distancing  Although, everyone is aware of the benefits of social distancing at the moment, it is needless to say that this isolation is one of the reason for increase in the level of stress and anxiety in people.  The misconception about the virus, it’s spread, never endings rumours and ever increasing “lockdown” together are further increasing the number of people facing mental issues. Here are some of the health issues faced by us during this pandemic

Why are we facing such issues o By continuous watching of news and rumours about covid 19 o Insecurity about job and business o Financial losses o Confusion ( between normal flu and covid 19 ) o Deficient distribution of necessity o Unavailability of medicines and medical facilities o Avoidance by communities due to stigma or fear o Risk of exposure to virus o Limited treatment options

Insomnia Why the people are facing insomnia…..? o Little sunlight o Lack of routine o Anxiety from the news o Little movements o Financial fears How to overcome it o Plan your day o Stay physically active o Avoid overexposing to the electronic screen o Don’t overdo the naps o Limit media intake and focus on the positives o Listen soothing and relaxing songs

Depression Causes o Exacerbating widespread spread of crisis o Personal loss o Prolonged social isolation o Unemployment o Economic losses How to overcome it o Make use of physical activity o Practice healthy living habits like proper nutrition and sufficient sleep o Limit your access to stressors o Count on your own strengths o Remind yourself of winning strategies you used in past to get through difficult times

  8. 8. Sakshi Kaur Hira (Counselling Psychologist) What problems people are bringing to you? There are lot of issues people are seeking support for. Few of them are directly impacted by the lockdown situation with no prior history of significant mental health issues. Such concerns mostly revolves around boredom, issues in sustaining attention in daily tasks, frustration, anger and sudden feelings of anxiousness about uncertainty which is also rooted in unclear communication form educational institutions, and various departments. An interesting sect of people approaching are also who do not trust our government officials and systems, considering rampant corruption and ethical issues within our system. Quite a lot of people are approaching with impending mental health concerns to which they could never pay attention but due to lockdown a lot of repressed issues are surfacing. Such concerns could be relationship with family, traumatic history of childhood abuse, anxiety around finances, career, grief etc.

As we all are aware that medical professionals are on the frontier, few senior professionals also contacted to seek help to manage stressful situation due to lack of PPE kits, constant death tolls, media attention and sustaining motivation and enthusiasm for themselves as well as team members. A very important section of people and easily ignored are queer individuals, victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, in particular children who are stuck with abusive perpetrators. How do you think people are coping..? A lot of people are coping through contacting professionals like me, but these numbers are very low, though there are various toll free helplines working to support and guide people through such a time, I feel we are yet to connect to people who could not be aware of symptoms of mental health issues. People are using various coping strategies like they are distracting themselves by watching series, movies, playing online games , etc., reflecting on themselves and their life goals, learning new skills, like baking, cooking, coding, or pursuing hobbies that were usually difficult during the pre corona time.
  10. 10. How do you think people should carry on to be in mental peace? I do not have very simple answer to this. I usually suggest my clients that this time is difficult and no one method is going to help sustain for long to all. so we will have to keep on experimenting in ways that helps us. I do make a point that I do not shame or make my clients feel guilty about their coping methods. If one sitting on the couch whole day, watching Netflix that is okay. Eating during difficult times helps a lot of people and I not indulge into food shaming them. My motto is "Do whatever helps you survive, just see if you can take some break from it and you can go back into that behaviour." One important think that I want to put emphasis on is the posts circulating around pushing people to transform and be productive, I am not okay with that. It is pandemic and not some productivity challenge, one can suggest ideas to people to work on, but shaming is not okay if people are not working on themselves as others expect them to. What has been helping a lot of people is: 1. Having a routine (which if you do not follow on days, that is okay) 2. Learning new skills 3. Pursuing hobbies 4. Being in touch with loved ones via gaming, video calls and other various methods (it is physical and social distancing not emotional distancing)
  11. 11. 5. Finding ways to nurture yourself that could be doing things that one loves to do, that could be reading books, playing with your pet, teaching them new tricks etc.) 6. Reading and discussing covid news only in given slot of the day, prefer not to discuss it just before and after sleep. 7. The above mentioned points could might be difficult to pursue for people stuck within unsafe environment, so for them safety could be the utmost priority and is okay if thats all they can do. In short, it is okay if you're not feeling peaceful, you aren't ought to, surviving the pandemic is important.

Dr. Pratibha Verma o Exercise regularly – Surya namaskar is an excellent combination of different work outs and is easy to perform at home o Sit in padmasan on floor and eat meals with your hands without any gadgets. This will help in metabolism and absorption of food properly o Hydrate adequately – drink 10-12 glass of water daily also include nimbu pani, keri panna, chhas to maintain electrolytes. Consume daily to boost immunity. o Get adequate sleep – Do meditation or chanting before sleep to keep yourself stress free and get quality sleep. o Avoid caffeine, alcohol and junk food o Manage stress – You can work on your hobbies and explore your interests , enjoy and relax, spend time with your family, think positive and rejuvenate yourself o Maintain personal hygiene – bath daily, wash your hands , keep yourself and your home clean

SOME WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM o Include all kinds of cereals and pulses in your daily diet. o Wheat is commonly used but millets like jowar, bajra, ragi, rajgira have very high nutritional values o We can make different recipes like sattu powder ( roasted wheat & chana dal powder) which can be given to any age group and is high in protein & calories. Mix different flours to make roti o Include local fruits and vegetables in your daily meal. It will fulfill the required vitamins in your body. o Grow fruits , vegetables and herbs in your kitchen garden and enjoy organic vegetables at your home o Add spices and herbs like black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, garlic, Tulsi leaves, moringa leaves, wheat grass, lemon grass etc. as they are a good source of antioxidants. o Cook and eat traditional food which provides all nutrients required by our body.

Dr. Bloom Verma o When children feel threatened, stress causes hormones to wreak havoc on their bodies and emotions. o The ways to help children manage this lockdown stress: Regular routine to continue - Maintain the schedule - Encourage them to continue their learning, playing, eating &sleeping on the same scheduled time Keep them involved for continuous gross motor development - Art and Craft activities like best use of waste, vegetable printing, floral arrangements etc. - Fireless Cooking like making chapatti roll, making different shapes from dough and then you fry those (Pediatrician)
  15. 15. - Clay Moulding - Treasure hunt activities - Their hobbies like dancing , singing etc. Ensure healthy eating o Importance of fresh home cooked food o No junk food o Plenty of liquids like nimbu pani, chaach Maintain Connectivity o Arrange for video chats with their cousins or friends Think before speaking o Don’t pass negative comments regarding the on going scenario o Restrict screen time Encourage and Appreciate o Encourage them to do one new task each day o Appreciate their efforts they put into each task they perform
  16. 16. Dr. Shivpratap Singh Yadav 11 ways to increase immunity: 1 - Drink warm water throughout the day. 2- Practice Yogasanas daily. Do pranayama and yogasana for at least 30 minutes. 3- In cooking, use spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander and garlic daily. 4- Take one teaspoon (10g) of Chyawanprash every morning. People suffering from diabetes should eat sugarfree jyawanprash. 5- Make a decoction of basil, cinnamon, black pepper, dry ginger and dry grapes and eat it once or twice a day.   17. 17. 6- Drink milk mixed with turmeric. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric in 150ml of warm milk. One can drink such milk once or twice a day. 7-sesame oil or coconut oil or ghee to both the nasal cavities. Do this once or twice a day in the morning or evening. 8- Fill one spoon of sesame oil or coconut oil in the mouth. Swirl it in the mouth for two to three minutes and then spill it. After this rinse with warm water. Do this once or twice a day. Remedy for cough and sore throat 9- Take fresh mint or celery steam once or twice a day. 10 - If you have a sore throat or cough, mix clove powder with honey or sugar and take it two or three times a day. 11- The above remedies are for common cough, yet you are advised that if such symptoms appear, contact the nearest doctor and follow the advice of the doctor.

  19. 19. Student Being the 2020 pass out batch is not only giving me anxiety but also making me question my future. By this time I should have been done with my exams, planning my new job, thinking about new opportunities . But now all I can think of is where is the world leading to and what will our future look like. This pandemic is causing greater recession than the great depression. People who already had jobs are getting laid of. What will happen to us who are just starting their true life journey. Future is uncertain but we need to remain calm and not let these things get into our heads. - Name Businessman As a business man in my views the outbreak of covid 19 influenced the business activities at global level but it is very difficult for the general people belonging from middle class to cope up with the current situation. The spread of coronavirus has caused several of the most profit earning orders to be cancelled resulting in a big loss for now. The general business which is only possible by doing it manually not by digital means are suffering badly. During the first half of quarantine it was even adjustable to manage food and other essentials but in this situation after the lockdown get extended it is becoming more and more difficult. This situation greatly influencing the mental health too as a business man I can understand what my colleagues are going through, depression, stress,boredom,financial fear and much more but we need to respect all the people who are stepping out to ensure our safety - Amarlal Wadhwani
  20. 20. IT Professional Humans have a bad habit of thinking comfort as laziness, and this is what happening in case pf WFH scenario. In my project there is a tracker which tracks the online hours and offline hours as work. It also shows average of top 20% employee in my project. So while I was working from office the average online hours for top 20% was around 6:30 hrs. to 6:45 hrs. After a week this average has reached 8:30 hrs to 8:45hrs. Means people are spending a lot of tine by being at home. Its almost like they are surrounded by some guilt for working from home. They are having thoughts as we are in why I should not exploit it and work more, and eventually they are ending up exhausting themselves. Sometimes my dreams are also filled with work I do and it continues in loop. No doubt that for a long period will leave a mentally exhausted person behind. - Naweli Prachi Housewife I always thought when would I be enjoying some quality time with my family. This happened but at what cost. All my family is at home amid this lockdown but we aren't able to spend good time with each other. First of all there is lack of ration, we have to use things cautiously and this is really bothering me. The only question that runs in my mind is what to cook with such limited resources? Also everybody is home for the whole day so they are bored and hungry So i have to be in kitchen. Although, the family is equally helping me with the chores I feel more tired than the regular days. And also There is so much chaos causing fights , and its not anyone's fault , its just every person is dealing with their own feelings. If this continues for a long time it would lead to an emotional and mental breakdown.
