5. Getting to know people
on Twitter is a bit like
going to a party where
you don’t know anyone
Start slowly – chat with a few
people, make connections
with people who share similar
interests, values and you’ll
soon make connections
6. Let’s make sure we all follow each other!
Pop your @username in the chat box
7. Make your profile page shout about you!
• Update your bio. Think about what makes you, you.
What are you interested in and passionate about?
• Add a profile picture if you haven’t done that yet
• Add a background picture if you haven’t done that
yet (may we suggest the School one? ;-))
8. Hashtags
Used to find other people tweeting about
the same thing.
Hashtags we use a lot in Horizons include:
- #S4CA
- Improve4Patients
- #OurNHSPeople
- #Caring4NHSPeople
(you’ll also see hashtags for TV
programmes etc)
Hashtags are vital for measurement and
evaluation and finding your influencers
Please remember to use CamelCase
(capitals at the start of words) to help with
accessibility

slide deck (the link to the slide deck is in the chat box)
• Pop the graphic in a tweet
• Type some text about why you like that tip – could it be
useful for other people, too?

Let’s send a tweet!
What does a good tweet look like?
Give people information. This could be:

Be clear (think what/who/why/where/when)
Be yourself!
Practice!
12. Some thoughts on why and how Twitter
is so vital for Horizons’ work…
13.
14. Find the 3%!
Just 3% of people in the
organisation or system typically
influence 85% of the other people
Source: Organisational Network Analysis by Innovisor
15. The 3% rule also appears true for social media
Source: research by Graham MacKenzie using NodeXL
In health and
healthcare globally,
tweets by 3.3% of
tweeters accounted
for 85% of retweets
16. The superconnectors become even more important at times of
ambiguity and uncertainty, such as a pandemic
@davemorgan_NEAS
@trishgreenhalgh
@doctor_oxford
Some examples of people who are in the 3% -
“superconnectors”
17. What are the biggest opportunities for
healthcare improvers in an era of social
media?
• As curators and sharers of knowledge
• As bridge builders between disconnected groups
18. Most social media operates
within an Echo Chamber

19. How to break out of the Echo Chamber:
Create a spectrum of allies!
