1. Selfishness
“The primary cause for our ills can be summed up in one word –
selfishness.”
“Throughout all creation there is nothing except the selfishness of the
human heart that lives only for itself. God planned that everything in
creation would be a blessing for others but his plan first met defiance in
heaven when Lucifer planned to be above everything else.
Isaiah 14:14
“The tenth commandment is God’s warning against harboring an attitude of
covetousness, self-seeking, looking out for yourself and selfish gain.”
The two main players of covetousness are a struggle between good and evil:
Christ
Being in the form of God did not consider it robbery to be equal with God but
made Himself of no reputation. Philippians 2:6-7
2. Lucifer
Later known as Satan who said, "I will exalt my throne above the stars and be
like the most high.“
Isaiah 13:13-14
“If you are a selfish Christian, you are lukewarm.”
Revelation 3:15-16
“Selfishness is the attitude of being concerned of one’s own interest over the
concerns of others.”
Philippians 2:3-4
“In this passage Paul compares selfishness to empty conceit which could be
translated in vanity or arrogance. It refers to an overly high opinion of
oneself. Selfishness then is akin to narcissism-excess self-love and
inordinate fascination with oneself. Erotic gratification derived from
admiration of one’s own physical or mental attributes.”
“Narcissistic people are at the infantile level of personality development.”
“Selfishness or empty conceit is often built by tearing someone else down
3. while building up oneself.”
Galatians 5:20
James 3:16
“Selfishness caused the children of Israel to put God to the test.”
Psalms 78:18
“We put God to the test by demanding blessings such as a companion,
wealth, etc.”
“Selfishness also caused the rich young ruler to turn his back on Jesus.”
Matthew 19:21-22
“Selfishness ruins friendships.”
Proverbs 18:1
“Selfishness hinders prayer and is the product of earthly wisdom.”
James 4:3
4. The opposite of selfishness:
“The opposite of selfishness is being united with Christ, having tenderness and
compassion, being likeminded, having the same love, and being one in Spirit
and in purpose.”
“Combating selfishness requires humility and being humble requires having a
true perspective about ourselves in our relation to God.”
Romans 12:3
Examples of Selfishness:
Being a lover of self – 2 Timothy 3:2
Pleasing ourselves – Romans 15:1
Seeking our own – 1 Corinthians 10:33, Philippians 2:21
Seeking after gain – Isaiah 56:11
Seeking undue precedence – Matthew 20:20-24
Living to ourselves – 2 Corinthians 5:15
Neglect of the poor – 1 John 3:17
Serving God for a reward – Malachi 1:10
Performing duty for a reward – Micah 3:11
Inconsistent with Christian love - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Inconsistent with communion of saints - Romans 12:4-5, 1 Corinthians 12:12-16
5. “God will humble those who don’t humble themselves.”
Leviticus 26:18-21
“Selfishness reveals its true face when it’s hard for us to give away
something. That can happen in many areas depending on what our heart is
attached to.”
“A selfish person refuses to give to those who asks and will often never part
with possession or money voluntarily. They are bound to the things of this
earth but do not realize they are bound to the prince of this earth. They have
become his servant here and one day will not inherit the kingdom of God
even if he did seem to believe in Jesus on earth.”
“Many Christians pretend not to be stingy but are often bound to their
possessions.”
“Selfishness is the opposite of love. To say you love someone and you’re
selfish, then you really don’t love them.”
“Stinginess makes us trespass against love.”
“The selfish sow terrible seeds in their short life on earth, but it will grow in
the other world as their inheritance is the kingdom of darkness.”
6. Luke 12:15
“We will submit to stinginess every time if we do not love Jesus and are
not competed committed to Him.”
Matthew 10:8
