This month’s webinar will focus on family engagement. The importance of a family’s role in a child’s academic, social, and emotional development is widely accepted and encouraged throughout the education sector. Yet, somehow many districts and schools struggle with cultivating and sustaining positive relationships with families. This can be particularly true in Hispanic communities. Join us to hear about two program models designed to create strong engagement between families and their children’s schools, and discuss ways to engage Hispanic families in education successfully.
PTA Comunitario Presenters are: Aurelio Montemayor, Intercultural Development Research Association, and Lourdes Flores, Parent Leader, PTA Comunitario

Editor's Notes
Lourdes: ARISE is…. Aurelio : IDRA is….15 years ago IDRA and ARISE began a relationship that continues through today. Sr. Gerrie Naughton, invited IDRA to conduct training of staff which continues to this day. I was appointed and then elected to the nation PTA board, 2006 through 2010. After several years of dialogue, Lourdes agreed to organize a PTA Comunitario based in ARISE.
The monthly process, August through June, includes membership meetings, training on educational issues, and projects based on the data and information collected. The meetings are mostly in Spanish.Lourdes
The Superintendent of the Donna ISD actually brought all his administrators and key staff to a breakfast hosed by ARISE in the Dolores Huerta center. It was a morning of dialogue and connections among ARISE staff and families and the administrators of all the campuses in the school district.
Many other special events have been hosted by the PTA Comunitario such as evening meetings so that the whole family can attend and even meetings with the youths whose families are part of ARISE. These are 80+ young people participating in a workshop about the drastic cuts in the Texas education budget, a session their parents had attended that very morning.Lourdes: Youth leadership and preparation for college are two major goals our PTAs have. Etc.
Now we have a newly funded project: PTA Comunitario United States Department of EducationOffice of Innovation and Improvement – part of the Investment in Innovation Fund (i3)The three objectives are to create new PTA Comunitarios using the model of what has already worked in south Texas; Establishing partnerships with schools, and carrying out educational leadership projects.
