1 15 Final Lab Report: Water Quality & Contamination Student: Monica McNeal SCI207: Dependence of Man of on the Environment Instructor: Jeffrey Sigler Date: August 5, 2013 A Study of the groundwater contamination, water treatment and water quality Abstract Comment by Jeffrey Sigler: This isn’t really an abstract. It is more of an introduction. An abstract is very succinct (a paragraph or two) and summarizes the entire study – including results and conclusions. In this experiment we explore the effects of groundwater contamination, study the water treatment process and teststudy the quality of tap water versus bottled water. Groundwater is rain water that infiltrates the soil and underlying rocks, or water from lakes that is absorbed in the soil or bedrock. When harmful substances are absorbed in the groundwater, the contamination is not only harmful for humans, but also causes problems to the flora and fauna. In the first experiment we study the effects of groundwater contamination. Two main types of contaminants, parabens and ammonium, have had the most potent effect on greywater, due to a fact that parabens produced its grey color, and ammonium content influenced its purgent odor (citation). By mixing water with common products we have in our household we were able to show the chemical poperties of the water were changed by vegetable oil, vinegar and laundry detergent. Imagine that happening on a global scale, and that will give us a picture of massive groundwater contamination that is detrimental to the living organisms. In the second experiment we studiedy the process of water filtration. We created a home filtration system, similar in concept to the ones used in the cities'municipal wasteterwater treatment plans. This experiment made us aware that a succesfull wastewater treatment will eliminate the ammonia, chloride, phosphate and iron from the tap water. The test strips helped us identify the amounts of the chemical elements that are still present in the drinking water. The third experiment is an extension of the second experiment. The third experiment looked at the examined the levels of various chemicals in bottled water and tap water. The bottled water industry is a multi-million dollar industry in the United States (citation??). This experiment helped us properly understand the fact that bottled water is not necessarily free of chemicals and may not be more beneficial compared to the treated tapwater. Introduction Wastewater Water is a basic living necessity that needs to be protected. According to the EPA, "40% of people living in the United States use groundwater for drinking, cooking, cleaning, showering, and all other types of activities. 97% of people living in rural areas of the nation use groundwater, and 30-40% of water used agriculturally (for farming) is from the ground" (1) In other words, water is used for many important things such as dri ...

Lab 2 – Water Quality and Contamination Experiment 1: Effects of Groundwater Contamination Table 1: Water Observations (Smell, Color, Etc.) Beaker Observations 1 The water clear with no odor 2 The oil floated to top cloudy no odor 3 The water smelled like vinegar/ little cloudy 4 Soap bubbles formed and remained at the top, no odor 5 The water is brownish with a light dirty smell 6 The water was brownish with some soil at the bottom with a little oil 7 The water was a little brown vinegar smell with a little particles at the bottom 8 The water was brownish with more particles than #5,6, and 7 no smell and cloudy POST LAB QUESTIONS 1. Develop hypotheses on the ability of oil, vinegar, and laundry detergent to contaminate groundwater. a. Oil hypothesis = Oil will not contaminate but possibly the amount of water filtered may change b. Vinegar hypothesis = Vinegar will contaminate and would allow the soil to filter c. Laundry detergent hypothesis = The water would pass through but will be contaminated with soap bubbles. 2. Based on the results of your experiment, would you reject or accept each hypothesis that you produced in question 1? Explain how you determined this. a. Oil hypothesis accept/reject = Oil would be trapped in the soil / Accept b. Vinegar hypothesis accept/reject = Vinegar would pass through the soil / Accept c. Laundry detergent hypothesis accept/reject = Laundry detergent would contaminate the water / Reject 3. What affects did each of the contaminants have on the water in the experiment? Which contaminant seemed to have the most potent effect on the water? Answer = It seem all contaminants had effects on the water with vinegar seeming to have the most potent effect and you could identify it by the smell and the detergent had not odor and a little cloudy. The oil seems as though it will leave the water with less contamination. 4. Using at least 1 scholarly source, discuss what type of affects these contaminants (oil, vinegar, detergent) might have on a town’s water source and the people who drank the water? Answer = Contaminants could cause potential health problems such as hepatitis, cholera and affect infants with the blue baby syndrome. http://www.epa.gov/region1 5. Describe what type of human activity would cause contaminants like oil, acid and detergents to flow into the water supply? Additionally, what other items within your house do you believe could contaminate the water supply if you were to dump them onto the ground? Answer = Contaminates like motor oil, gas from human activity and household contaminates would be from cooking oil, house hold cleaning products, battery acid, jewelry cleaner and paint. Experiment 2: Water Treatment POST LAB QUESTIONS 1. Develop a hypothesis on the ability of your filtration technique to remove contaminants. Hypothesis = Coagulants and alkalinity will remove most of groundwater contaminants. For example the funnel filled with the activated charcoal, sand and gravel seemed to produ ...

Water Testing Lab Background Information: Chemists can detect and identify ions in water solution in several different ways. In this lab you will use some chemical tests to check for the presence of certain ions in aqueous solution. Positively charged ions are called cations; negatively charged ions are called anions. The tests you will perform are confirming tests. If the test is positive, it confirms that the ion in question is present. In each confirming test you will look for a change in solution color, or the appearance of an insoluble material called a precipitate. A negative test (no color change or precipitate) doesn’t necessarily mean the ion in question is not present. The ion may simply be present in such a small amount that the color or precipitate cannot be seen. Purpose: § To use chemical tests to determine the presence of ions in three different water samples. Objectives: § To test for the presence of cations iron (III) Fe3+, calcium Ca2+, copper Cu+, as well as the anions chloride Cl-, phosphate PO43-, and sulfate SO42-. § To perform each of the following confirming tests on three different samples: 1. A reference solution (known to contain the ion of interest) 2. Tap water (which may or may not contain the ion) 3. A control (distilled water, known not to contain the ion) § Test for water hardness using ion-testing strips. § Complete a confirmative ion-testing using a complete ion-testing strip. Materials: § 10 test tubes § Test tube rack § 10 mL graduated cylinder § Test reagent solutions in dropper bottles o Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) o Potassium oxalate (K2C2O4) o Acetic acid (HC2H3O2) o Silver nitrate (AgNO3) o Barium Chloride (BaCl2) § Reference ion solutions o Iron (III) Nitrate - Fe(NO3)3 o Calcium Chloride – CaCl2 o Iron (II) Sulfate – FeSO4 Procedures: PART ONE 1. Safety goggles should be worn at ALL times during this lab exercise. If you spill any of the reagents on your hands, wash them immediately. 2. Clean five test tubes with water and dry all glassware before starting the experiment. 3. In this lab, you are testing water samples for the presence of four different ions: Ca2+, Fe3+, Cl-, and SO42-. For EACH of the test procedures you will test a reference solution (known to contain the ion), a control (distilled water-known not to contain the ion), and your water samples brought from home. Follow the diagram below and be sure to keep track of your water samples: 4. Measure 1 pipette full (about 2 mL) of reference solution, control, and the three water samples into five clean test tubes. Label the three test tubes Reference (R), Control (C), and Water Sample #1, 2, & 3. 5. Follow the table below to test for each ion: 6. As you perform each test, record your observations in the data table below. 7. When you have completed an ion test, wash your test tubes with water and dry them thoroughly before moving on to the next ion test. P.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
