Insurance consumer education involves a systematic effort to promote two core objectives:
- Raising awareness vis-à-vis the potential risks to which individuals are exposed and the means by which insurance can best cover those risks
- Developing the knowledge, capacities and confidence of individuals needed to make informed decisions about how to protect themselves and their family and to adopt proactive and responsible behaviour as regards their risk exposure and insurance coverage.

Using raffle prizes to encourage takeup of unfamiliar products (Xac Bank, Mongolia)
Xac Bank (Mongolia) uses highly-publicized raffles to encourage takeup and use of savings accounts, a product that is new and unfamiliar to some client segments (including children and low-income adults). Past prizes have included a trip to Disneyland, cars, and apartments. The bank also gives small gifts to new clients when they open accounts, but reports that the raffles are particularly successful in generating excitement around the products.
