Methods were developed to isolate, identify, and characterize endophytic fungi from Brachiaria grass in Kenya. Over 700 fungi were isolated, with molecular identification of 515 fungi. Analysis of gene sequences from 94 shoot and 260 root isolates identified 45 taxa from shoots and 44 from roots. The shoot fungi comprised 45 taxa from two phyla and the root fungi 44 taxa. Several genera identified, including Acremonium and Sarocladium, are known to confer disease resistance through vertical seed transmission in Brachiaria grass.
