Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario

History

The Fundación del Gran Rosario, began operating in 2000, for the purposes of
deepening the work on academic training, drafting of projects and proposals
aimed at encouraging the cultural, scientific and technological development of
Rosario and its surrounding areas.

As from inception, it promotes Higher Education activities seeking academic
excellence and sustainable regional development, mainly in areas of knowledge
still lacking in this region, such as Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences.

Thus, the Foundation implemented graduate and postgraduate courses under an
Academic Agreement with the Universidad Nacional de San Martin. Such experi-
ence constituted a strength that led the Foundation to create the Instituto
Universitario del Gran Rosario (IUGR), which entity is operating on a self-governing
basis since 2006.

Creation

The Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario (IUGR) is a higher education institution,
operating on a self-governing basis as to academic and institutional matters,
engaged in Health Sciences, specially developing Rehabilitation and Movement
Sciences, a discipline still lacking in this region.

Provisionally authorized by the Argentine Government in 2006, the IUGR began
operating in 2008, with graduate and postgraduate courses, subject to strict
evaluation by the Argentine Commission of University Evaluation and
Accreditation [Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria]
(CONEAU).

The IUGR's foundational purpose is to be an institution with academic excellence so
as to become a referent for the city of Rosario and its surrounding area. For such
purpose, it counts on a faculty consisting of teachers and professors with a relevant
academic and professional career, and it also encourages research activities and
links to society.

The IUGR's main mission is to train professionals working on an interdisciplinary
basis both in clinic and care for the patient, boosting and prioritizing people's
abilities, taking individuals as an integral being in constant social interaction.

The broad pre-professional practice system the IUGR has managed to draw up
constitutes an essential pillar for the training of such professionals. Through the
Health Care Teaching Units [Unidades Docentes Asistenciales], located both in
public and private health institutions of the city of Rosario and its surrounding
area, students from all courses of studies, conduct their pre-professional practice,
under their teachers' constant supervision. Since 2011, this practice system is
available to students from other countries through the Pre-professional Practice
International Program.

Another fundamental element in this training process, is the academic exchange
with renowned universities in the areas of rehabilitation and movement. In this
respect, the IUGR encourages the creation of cooperation links to institutions in

our country and from abroad, in order to foster the ongoing improvement of
academic quality, as well as encouraging the exchange of students, teachers and
researchers.

Simultaneously, the IUGR is actively engaged in the attention of persons with
disabilities, by developing initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life and
promoting equal opportunities, mainly in the labor area. An example of this
commitment is the recently created Inclusive Rosario University Center (CURI)
[Centro Universitario Rosario Inclusiva], exclusively intended to support and
encourage this type of activities.

Degree in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy (5 years)

A professional with a Degree in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy is a university
graduate whose competence is shown in knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes
in activities of health promotion, maintenance, prevention and recovery. They
have skills to act with a comprehensive vision respecting all and any human beings'
and society's ethical, moral and cultural principles.

Such professionals have knowledge on anatomy, histology, physiology, semiology
and pathology enabling them to work in the clinic of surgical medical diseases. In
addition, they have specific discipline knowledge that make it possible for them to
determine and perform evaluations and kinesiological physiotherapies adjusted to
each health-disease process, and to plan general and/or special health services and
services relating to audits, experts' opinions and labor functional examinations.

Degree in Occupational Therapy (4 years)

The performance of a professional with a Degree in Occupational Therapy is
related to rehabilitation and movement. The goal of the new concept of rehabilita-
tion is to reinstate the capacity of people, focusing on participation, self-
determination and equal opportunities. Such professionals provide services to
persons of different age groups whose occupational performance is interrupted or
threatened by a situation of stress, disease, disability or accident, among others.

The curricular design of the course of studies is oriented to training from an inter-
disciplinary perspective, since it is necessary to take into account that any alter-
ations that may occur in certain areas (organic, psychic, social) may cause an imbal-
ance in other areas: this solution of problems shows a broader and more compre-
hensive concept and evidences a new rehabilitation model.

Degree in Educational Psychology (5 years)

The intervention of a professional with a Degree in Educational Psychology is
focused on the promotion of operating forms of learning at all instances of the
development of persons, from children to the elderly. Such professional works on
an interdisciplinary basis on prevention, diagnosis and treatment, in public and
private institutions in the areas of health, social and community, education, labor
and forensic matters.

Learning constitutes a complex issue, since it comprises several factors, and in such
complexity the fracture is more evident. The purpose of the IUGR's plan of studies
for the Degree in Educational Psychology is to train Educational Psychologists with
a solid theoretical and practical training that may assure an accountable, ethical,
pertinent, creative and essentially human professional practice, supported on a
strict academic training.

Degree in Orthosis and Prosthesis (4 years)

The professional with a Degree in Orthosis and Prosthesis is capable of designing,
manufacturing, adjusting and assembling orthopedics elements for people with
disabilities, that contribute to improving their quality of life. Their main goal is to
find equipment to achieve the patient's physical rehabilitation, not setting aside
their full integration into society.

Their professional scope comprises intervention in different areas requiring the
orthotics and prosthetics approach, such as traumatology, neuromuscular,
musculoskeletal, rheumatology, and sports medicine areas, among others. Such
scope also covers activities related to the planning and arrangement of general
health services and/or special orthotics and prosthetics services, both in the public
and private sector.

Degree in Physical Activity (4 years)

The Degree in Physical Activity is intended to provide students with appropriate
scientific training in basic and specific aspects related to Physical Activity and
Training, as well as the relevant methods and techniques.
During the course of studies, students will be provided with practical experimenta-
tion, they will acquire theoretical and practical foundations, and they will experi-
ence practical knowledge to be used in recreational, sports, physical fitness and
sports performance activities.
This is a four-year course of studies intended to training human resources capable
of understanding the complexity of new paradigms related to Physical Activity and
Training.

Our goals:

To train Professionals with a Degree in Physical Activity with a sound theo-
retical and practical education that may assure a responsible, ethical, appropriate
and creative professional practice based on strict academic training.

To train Professionals that may contribute a vision and practice of the basic
and specific aspects related to Physical Activity and Training with respect to the
different age groups.

To train Professionals that may have the methodological theoretical set-
tings regarding research, with an interdisciplinary criterion enabling the develop-
ment of new models based on the paradigm of Physical Activity and Training.

To train Professionals capable of giving advice and intervening in different
institutional environments to meet the specific needs of human life quality
improvement.

To train Professionals that may interact in different contexts, such as recre-
ational, sports, physical fitness and sports performance activities.

Pre-professional practice

The Health Care Teaching Units, located in premises of public and private health
care institutions in our city, constitute a pre-professional practice environment for
students. Simultaneously, they are part of a system of expansion towards the
community through which IUGR's students perform health care works. By means of
these Units, the provincial health system relies on the contribution from IUGR's
students and teachers, whereas the IUGR enriches and boosts its professionals'
training quality.
Since the end of 2011, this practice system is available to international students,
through the Professional Practice International Program.

Kinesiology and Physical Therapy:
Under their tutor's strict supervision, students perform collaborative tasks for
prevention, rehabilitation and treatment of patients with surgical and non-
surgical chronic pathologies in 19 health care institutions (high and medium
complexity primary care centers). Thus, in recent years, more than 60,000 annual
practices have been performed.

Occupational Therapy:
Students perform practices in the areas of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Physical
Dysfunction, Psychological and Social Dysfunctions, Labor and Community Health.
At present, Second Year students have provided care approximately to 100 patients
of the Provincial Geriatrics Hospital throughout this year.

Educational Psychology:
As from the Fourth Year, students perform practices both in Education and Clinic
areas, in several Education and Health Institutions in Rosario and the surrounding
areas, covering an average of 1,000 hours/year of practice, which are added to the
hours in the Office of the Health Care Teaching Unit of Educational Psychology.

Orthosis and Prosthesis:
Under an instructor's supervision, students perform activities of observation,
evaluation and equipment manufacture in the Health Care Teaching Unit installed

at the Orthosis and Prosthesis Lab of the ILAR (Institute of Anti-Polio Fight and
Rehabilitation of Disabled People) [Instituto de Lucha Antipoliomielítica y
Rehabilitación del Lisiado], of the Municipality of Rosario, under a schedule of up
to 3 hours/day. The Lab's Service Chief is a Professional with a Degree in Orthosis
and Prosthesis.

In 2004, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rosario, the first actions were
taken to start up our Lab, with the goals of producing orthotics and prosthetics
equipment and generating specific rehabilitation equipment for people receiving
attention at municipal public health care providers. In 2010, the Principal of the
IUGR, the Governor of the Province of Santa Fe, the Municipality of Rosario and the
Orthosis and Prosthesis Lab of the ILAR, executed an Agreement aimed at consoli-
dating such actions, renewing the commitment to satisfy the needs of the region
for orthotics and prosthetics assistance.

                                                              Orthosis and

Location

The IUGR is located in the city of Rosario, the second largest populated city in
Argentina, with one of the most important Public Health Systems in Latin America.
Rosario is strategically located in the humid “Pampa”, on the West margin of the
Paraná River, only 300 km (186 miles) north and 30 minutes by air from Buenos
Aires, the capital of our country. Arising in the 18th century as the “Pago de los
Arroyos”, Rosario became a city in 1852. This was the beginning of a period of rapid
growth for the city, which developed into the second most important city of
Argentina and one of the most booming cities of South America in just a few
decades.

  • 4. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario History The Fundación del Gran Rosario, began operating in 2000, for the purposes of deepening the work on academic training, drafting of projects and proposals aimed at encouraging the cultural, scientific and technological development of Rosario and its surrounding areas. As from inception, it promotes Higher Education activities seeking academic excellence and sustainable regional development, mainly in areas of knowledge still lacking in this region, such as Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences. Thus, the Foundation implemented graduate and postgraduate courses under an Academic Agreement with the Universidad Nacional de San Martin. Such experi- ence constituted a strength that led the Foundation to create the Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario (IUGR), which entity is operating on a self-governing basis since 2006. 4
  • 5. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Creation The Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario (IUGR) is a higher education institution, operating on a self-governing basis as to academic and institutional matters, engaged in Health Sciences, specially developing Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences, a discipline still lacking in this region. Provisionally authorized by the Argentine Government in 2006, the IUGR began operating in 2008, with graduate and postgraduate courses, subject to strict evaluation by the Argentine Commission of University Evaluation and Accreditation [Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria] (CONEAU). The IUGR's foundational purpose is to be an institution with academic excellence so as to become a referent for the city of Rosario and its surrounding area. For such purpose, it counts on a faculty consisting of teachers and professors with a relevant academic and professional career, and it also encourages research activities and links to society. The IUGR's main mission is to train professionals working on an interdisciplinary basis both in clinic and care for the patient, boosting and prioritizing people's abilities, taking individuals as an integral being in constant social interaction. The broad pre-professional practice system the IUGR has managed to draw up constitutes an essential pillar for the training of such professionals. Through the Health Care Teaching Units [Unidades Docentes Asistenciales], located both in public and private health institutions of the city of Rosario and its surrounding area, students from all courses of studies, conduct their pre-professional practice, under their teachers' constant supervision. Since 2011, this practice system is available to students from other countries through the Pre-professional Practice International Program. Another fundamental element in this training process, is the academic exchange with renowned universities in the areas of rehabilitation and movement. In this respect, the IUGR encourages the creation of cooperation links to institutions in 5
  • 6. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario our country and from abroad, in order to foster the ongoing improvement of academic quality, as well as encouraging the exchange of students, teachers and researchers. Simultaneously, the IUGR is actively engaged in the attention of persons with disabilities, by developing initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life and promoting equal opportunities, mainly in the labor area. An example of this commitment is the recently created Inclusive Rosario University Center (CURI) [Centro Universitario Rosario Inclusiva], exclusively intended to support and encourage this type of activities. 6

  • 8. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Degree in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy (5 years) A professional with a Degree in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy is a university graduate whose competence is shown in knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes in activities of health promotion, maintenance, prevention and recovery. They have skills to act with a comprehensive vision respecting all and any human beings' and society's ethical, moral and cultural principles. Such professionals have knowledge on anatomy, histology, physiology, semiology and pathology enabling them to work in the clinic of surgical medical diseases. In addition, they have specific discipline knowledge that make it possible for them to determine and perform evaluations and kinesiological physiotherapies adjusted to each health-disease process, and to plan general and/or special health services and services relating to audits, experts' opinions and labor functional examinations. 8
  • 9. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Degree in Occupational Therapy (4 years) The performance of a professional with a Degree in Occupational Therapy is related to rehabilitation and movement. The goal of the new concept of rehabilita- tion is to reinstate the capacity of people, focusing on participation, self- determination and equal opportunities. Such professionals provide services to persons of different age groups whose occupational performance is interrupted or threatened by a situation of stress, disease, disability or accident, among others. The curricular design of the course of studies is oriented to training from an inter- disciplinary perspective, since it is necessary to take into account that any alter- ations that may occur in certain areas (organic, psychic, social) may cause an imbal- ance in other areas: this solution of problems shows a broader and more compre- hensive concept and evidences a new rehabilitation model. 9
  • 10. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Degree in Educational Psychology (5 years) The intervention of a professional with a Degree in Educational Psychology is focused on the promotion of operating forms of learning at all instances of the development of persons, from children to the elderly. Such professional works on an interdisciplinary basis on prevention, diagnosis and treatment, in public and private institutions in the areas of health, social and community, education, labor and forensic matters. Learning constitutes a complex issue, since it comprises several factors, and in such complexity the fracture is more evident. The purpose of the IUGR's plan of studies for the Degree in Educational Psychology is to train Educational Psychologists with a solid theoretical and practical training that may assure an accountable, ethical, pertinent, creative and essentially human professional practice, supported on a strict academic training. 10
  • 11. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Degree in Orthosis and Prosthesis (4 years) The professional with a Degree in Orthosis and Prosthesis is capable of designing, manufacturing, adjusting and assembling orthopedics elements for people with disabilities, that contribute to improving their quality of life. Their main goal is to find equipment to achieve the patient's physical rehabilitation, not setting aside their full integration into society. Their professional scope comprises intervention in different areas requiring the orthotics and prosthetics approach, such as traumatology, neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, rheumatology, and sports medicine areas, among others. Such scope also covers activities related to the planning and arrangement of general health services and/or special orthotics and prosthetics services, both in the public and private sector. 11
  • 12. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Degree in Physical Activity (4 years) The Degree in Physical Activity is intended to provide students with appropriate scientific training in basic and specific aspects related to Physical Activity and Training, as well as the relevant methods and techniques. During the course of studies, students will be provided with practical experimenta- tion, they will acquire theoretical and practical foundations, and they will experi- ence practical knowledge to be used in recreational, sports, physical fitness and sports performance activities. This is a four-year course of studies intended to training human resources capable of understanding the complexity of new paradigms related to Physical Activity and Training. Our goals: To train Professionals with a Degree in Physical Activity with a sound theo- retical and practical education that may assure a responsible, ethical, appropriate and creative professional practice based on strict academic training. To train Professionals that may contribute a vision and practice of the basic and specific aspects related to Physical Activity and Training with respect to the different age groups. To train Professionals that may have the methodological theoretical set- tings regarding research, with an interdisciplinary criterion enabling the develop- ment of new models based on the paradigm of Physical Activity and Training. To train Professionals capable of giving advice and intervening in different institutional environments to meet the specific needs of human life quality improvement. To train Professionals that may interact in different contexts, such as recre- ational, sports, physical fitness and sports performance activities. 12
  • 13. Instituto Universitario del Gran Rosario Pre-professional practice The Health Care Teaching Units, located in premises of public and private health care institutions in our city, constitute a pre-professional practice environment for students. Simultaneously, they are part of a system of expansion towards the community through which IUGR's students perform health care works. By means of these Units, the provincial health system relies on the contribution from IUGR's students and teachers, whereas the IUGR enriches and boosts its professionals' training quality. Since the end of 2011, this practice system is available to international students, through the Professional Practice International Program. Kinesiology and Physical Therapy: Under their tutor's strict supervision, students perform collaborative tasks for prevention, rehabilitation and treatment of patients with surgical and non- surgical chronic pathologies in 19 health care institutions (high and medium complexity primary care centers). Thus, in recent years, more than 60,000 annual practices have been performed. Occupational Therapy: Students perform practices in the areas of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Physical Dysfunction, Psychological and Social Dysfunctions, Labor and Community Health. At present, Second Year students have provided care approximately to 100 patients of the Provincial Geriatrics Hospital throughout this year. Educational Psychology: As from the Fourth Year, students perform practices both in Education and Clinic areas, in several Education and Health Institutions in Rosario and the surrounding areas, covering an average of 1,000 hours/year of practice, which are added to the hours in the Office of the Health Care Teaching Unit of Educational Psychology. Orthosis and Prosthesis: Under an instructor's supervision, students perform activities of observation, evaluation and equipment manufacture in the Health Care Teaching Unit installed 13
