El viaje desde Quito hacia Otavalo cumple con lo que parece un juego de palabras: es al norte de Ecuador y

■ Ir de Quito a Otavalo es uno de los muchos
viajes que se pueden realizar en Ecuador,
un país de pequeña extensión y enorme diver-
sidad. Aquí es donde resulta más fácil, en todo
el continente, pasar de las anchas playas del
Pacífico a los valles andinos –flanqueados por
volcanes cubiertos de nieves perpetuas– antes de
iniciar el descenso hacia los bosques tropicales
de la Amazonía. Todo ello pasando por el centro
histórico virreinal de Quito y la fortaleza incaica de
Ingapirca, y con la tentación siempre presente de
un salto a las incomparables islas Galápagos. Pe-
ro además de estos posibles destinos, es raro el
viajero que no emprende el camino hacia Otavalo.
La razón es que allí se celebra uno de los merca-
dos más vistosos y atractivos del continente.
El norte de Ecuador es una zona de anchos va-
lles en los que surgen lagunas de aguas limpias.
Las laderas de los volcanes aparecen cubiertas
de campos cultivados, cada uno con un tono
diferente de verde. El principio del camino está
dominado por la cumbre del Cayambe, cubierta
de nieves perpetuas. Con sus 5.790 metros de
altitud, es la tercera más alta del país y el destino
de muchos andinistas que encuentran en esta
ascensión un reto más sugestivo que en el Chim-
borazo y el Cotopaxi, aunque sus cimas sean más
elevadas. Además, estos escaladores consiguen
alcanzar un punto geográfico mítico. La línea del
ecuador casi roza la cumbre y atraviesa el glaciar
que desciende de ella, convirtiéndolo en el único
punto de la superficie de la Tierra en que hay
hielos perpetuos exactamente en el paralelo 0.

von Humboldt, que escribió maravillas sobre la
belleza del volcán.
El pueblo de Otavalo es famoso entre los
visitantes extranjeros que recorren Ecuador por
sus vistosas artesanías, pero en su origen no
es un mercado para turistas. Este valle ha sido,
desde tiempo inmemorial –mucho antes de la
llegada de los españoles, e incluso de los incas–,
un importante punto de encuentro entre gentes
provenientes de los altos valles andinos y de las
tierras calientes de la Amazonía. Era el lugar en
