Dutch Design Double
In September and October 2010, Utrecht and Amsterdam are joining forces for the third time and lots of
interesting projects on Dutch design will be bundled under the umbrella of Dutch Design Double. This year‘s
edition revolves around the famous and influential Dutch designer, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964).
Rietveld is renowned mostly for his chairs, yet his oeuvre is much broader and includes more than a hundred
buildings and a variety of furniture. This diversity is also a central theme in this year‘s Dutch Design Double.
Because Utrecht has been declared 2010 ‘Rietveld Year’, the Centraal Museum is exploring Rietveld‘s life and
work within the broader context of his era in the large retrospective Rietveld‘s Universe.
UTRECHT MANIFEST (UM) / MoDeRnisMTODAY is organizing a symposium in De Pastoe Fabriek on the role
of Rietveld in the development of social design – design from the perspective of the user.
In Amsterdam, UM / MoDeRnisMTODAY is holding lectures in the Stedelijk Museum on research carried out
into Rietveld‘s aluminium chairs; there‘s a ‘Rietveld room’ at Elle Inside Design; and it‘s also possible to visit iconic
Rietveld buildings in both Amsterdam and Utrecht. Plus there‘s lots more Rietveld fun to be had; details of which
you‘ll find in this programme.
Asides from the Rietveld theme, there are a number of other interesting design-related projects taking place.
Think DARE #5, the graduation exhibition by Masters students from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) or
De Woonbeurs Amsterdam at the Amsterdam RAI.
The full programme overview of which – of course – Rietveld is pivotal can be found on the following pages,
interspersed with Q&As from several Dutch Design Double programmers. And for the latest updates, please visit:
