This is my story for why I left PwC to help people find their passion. I talk about what motivated me (my unborn child at the time) and the reasons for why I left PwC. For those of you in jobs you don't really enjoy this could be some really helpful perspectives!

When my wife was pregnant with our firstborn, I kept imagining
this conversation I’d have with her some day in the future…

With this conversation playing in my head, I knew the clock was ticking.
I had to pursue my passion in time for this conversation so I could be the role model I
wanted to be

5. Bringing a startup into PwC is a bit like the gestation process of a baby

Once I had discovered what my passion was I tried bringing it into
the behemoth that is PwC….
…I had a few experiences that suggested it was similar to the 40
week period it takes to grow a baby*
Your baby will most

My business was around the 10 week mark, hence the prognosis of survival in the world
of PwC wasn't too good.
Based on what I had seen before, I felt the structural dynamics of large organisations
can be throttling to the creativity, speed and fail fast mindset that a startup needs to
adopt.

Almost 7 years ago I was sitting in a conference listening to how
the world we work in was going to change dramatically

I struggled to see a long term future for me at PwC
After I had absorbed these 2 realisations, I looked at my role at
PwC…
Have I had fantastic experiences at
PwC?
Have I advised Australia’s largest
corporates on people issues?
Can I see myself doing this for
another 40 years?
The answer was ‘no’. Whilst I didn’t hate what I did, I just couldn't see myself doing it for
a significant period of time

And so I realized that I needed to find my passion
I looked everywhere (like EVERYWHERE!) to find a process or
framework to help me find my passion
I found that there was a lot of inspiration, but no practical guidance to really help me
find what I loved to do

I decided if it doesn’t exist, build it!
I used my smarts from my management consulting career and
also researched far and wide

ongoing!) on what
makes a happy life
World Happiness
Reports
commissioned by
the United Nations
Researched
extensively
including drivers of
engagement at
work and positive
psychology

I supplemented my learnings with my own research
I gathered over 20,000 data points on drivers of happiness at work
This all resulted in a simple, easy to apply process to help me find a career that I love…I
emphasise ME – the initial intent wasn’t to grow a business around this!

And whilst I was mentoring and coaching others, I had an epiphany…
I noticed I feel really
energized when I help others
find and pursue their
passion…
…and… …I am pretty good at helping
people unlock their passion

But…how could my passion be helping others find theirs?
For a few years I really questioned if my passion was helping
others find theirs
Only when my wife was pregnant with our first born did I decide to get serious #ownit
