The end result of the experiment was a stronger, more
durable, piece of Styrofoam. The core became more
stable with the use of sturdy outer layers. The
sandwich structure became solid and compact.

In this experiment a sandwich structure composite model was made. Styrofoam
was used as a core base material while construction papers were used as
flexible outer thin layers. SC-15 epoxy resin was used as a combining agent.
This was done to increase the mechanical properties of the Styrofoam. The
combining agent was made by mixing Part A with Part B (the hardener).
Afterwards, the resin was applied to the core and each layer of the construction
paper which functioned as the outer layer. After sitting for 24 hours, it was
compared to an unmodified core. From observation between the sandwich
composite structure and a regular piece of Styrofoam, we came to the
conclusion that the sandwich structure composite was obviously more durable
and stronger.
Sandwich structure composites are materials made from two stiff skins that
are attached to a lightweight central core. The thin skins are attached to the
core using various types of resins depending on the intended application.
There are various applications of sandwich structure composites ranging
from ceiling tiles to airplane wings. The advantages of sandwich structure
composites are that it has a high strength to weight ratio, and it can function
as a thermal insulator. However, the different choices of core materials
determines the amount of damage absorbed and the weight of the model.
Solid cores are better at absorbing damage but are heavier, while honeycomb
cores a lighter but aren’t as good at absorbing damage.
