6. Our Attitude and THE SWACH BHARAT
ABHIYAN
• when it comes to cleanliness, we choose to care/clean/maintain things that
belong to us.
• But who defines what belongs to us? Who draws the boundaries that give us
the right to think something is ours/ not ours?
• For some, It might be an attitude that gets defined from childhood, beginning
back home. We clean “our home”; throw the dust outside our compound
walls. We clean the drainage and heap dirt up in the adjoining street away
from “our home”. We collect our garden waste and burn it in the park “away
from our home”. We spit on the roads because we know it is not “our house”.
• The concept of what is not ours gets embedded in the depth of our DNA’S.

7. Role of Government
• To cleanse this accumulated dirt from the minds of people our hon. Prime minister
wielded the broom to begin the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
• The movement aimed to symbolise that a country of 1.5 billion cannot be cleansed by a
few government servants instead by every citizen as a service towards the country.
• we can conclude that the whole problem of cleanliness could be solved if we could
mentally resolve the idea of what is mine. This national Mission helps people to redefine
boundaries of “what is mine”.
• there is a need to develop the habit of looking at the bigger picture.
• Bringing some rationality in the thought process should make us realize that something
that does not belong to us belongs to someone else. A mental simulation of the feeling
that we get when an outsider spits in our hall, just because it does not belong to him,
must do the magic.
• In a country that defined concepts like “Vasudev Kutumbakam” - one world -one family,
it is becoming increasingly difficult for its citizens to redefine boundaries beyond “My
home“.

8. Reality Check
• What is the use of your education and certificates if you cannot keep your
environment above your ego and arrogance?
• What is the use of your independence and empowerment if you cannot open
your mind and be sensitive and perceptive towards the world around you?
• What is the point in offering prayers to the various Gods if you cannot respect the
earth which you believe he has created?
• What is the point in shouting patriotic slogans if you are lackadaisical when it
comes to the basic cleanliness of your country?
• As they say, change the world, one person at a time! Start with yourself – then
with the people you come across in your day to day lives

9. Conclusion
• Making people aware is important, but more
important is that this awareness is converted
to actions.
• As government itself has taken the initiative,
this will definitely motivate people and make
them realize that cleanliness is not just
government’s responsibility.
• these efforts will not only force people to
change their attitude of “nothing will change”
but also ensures their participation too
