Insights Success came across American Battery Solutions in
its endeavor to find “The Top 10 Most Promising EV
Solution Providers of 2022.” We talked with Subhash to
learn about the know-how of ABS’s making a significant
difference.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
Give us a brief overview of your American Battery
Solutions, its mission, and the key aspects of its strong
foothold in the transportation industry.
American Battery Solutions (ABS) was founded with the
goal of developing and offering automotive quality,
engineered, and manufactured battery packs to those
segments of the market that the “big” cell makers were not
servicing. As the market is set for massive growth over the
coming decade, many companies need access to a high-
quality, US-manufactured battery packs. By partnering with
cell OEMs, we are able to service both small volume and
higher volume vehicles and applications.
Our strength is based in our people; we have an amazing
depth of technical expertise with team members that have
worked on nearly every major electrification project going
all the way back to the original Nickel-Metal Hydride
batteries that were used in the GM EV1 and Toyota Prius
programs.
Describe your top-notch offerings that address the need
of your customers.
We engineer, validate, and manufacture high-quality
lithium-ion batteries and battery systems to serve the
growing demands in electric vehicles (EV), electrified
transportation, motive, industrial, commercial markets, and
grid-connected energy storage systems (ESS). ABS has
launched our Alliance Intelligent Battery Series™, a family
of 24V and 48V, 2kWh and 3kWh modules for industrial
vehicles, light electric, and golf carts. In late 2022 we will
launch our first standardized Proliance Intelligent Battery
Series™ family of batteries, beginning with a 350V 50kWh
pack for commercial vehicles and following with a 350V
100kWh pack and a 665V 110kWh pack for heavy duty
commercial vehicles. In late 2023 ABS will also be
launching it’s first ESS solution more to come on that soon.
What makes your American Battery Solutions a
preferred choice among your clientele over other
competitors?
Our Energy is
Electric.
ABS is a hub of talent, technology, manufacturing and
know-how with more than 335 years of expertise in this
field. This level and depth of expertise allows us to work
with our partners to really understand their needs and find a
solution that is optimized for them. In some cases, our
standardized product is a great fit, but when they aren't, our
depth of knowledge allows us to develop customized
solutions to meet their needs.
How is American Battery Solutions improving the
customer experience with its automotive quality DNA?
ABS is applying aspects of the automotive engineering
process to the product development process there-by
driving customer requirements early in the process and
validating against those. We also ensure all products are
validated to international standards supporting markets
whose development has historically lagged the automotive
market by several years. This gives our customers a "leg
up" on their competition.
Describe the values that drive your organization.
Teamwork and appreciation of our people, customers, and
partners. We work together to find solutions to problems
and recognize our team members' contributions. We also
work to develop the next generation of battery experts by
bringing in new talent and training them.
In your opinion, what could be the future of the
transportation market post the COVID-19 pandemic?
And how are you strategizing your company's
operations for that future?
We are already seeing some changes in the post-COVID-19
world. The automotive and transportation markets are
moving more quickly towards electric than we expected.
But the supply base is also changing; we are finding there is
more demand for locally produced components and
systems. As one of the few independent battery pack
manufacturers in North America, we are able to
competitively supply to our customers from right here in
the US.
As we look at global growth strategies, we anticipate
expanding our operations to several other regions where we
can continue to grow and partner with our customers to
develop local content.
In what ways have you or your company contributed to
the community?
ABS contributes to the communities we operate in several
ways. First, our growth means that we bring good-paying
jobs into the regions we are based in. In some cases, this
has meant re-filling jobs that had been eliminated prior to
our taking over the facilities we are in today. Secondly,
ABS is involved with our local colleges, universities, and
trade schools, bringing in interns and hiring from these
groups to help grow the next generation of battery
engineers. Third, the ABS team members have big hearts
and support local charities and families in need throughout
the year.
What are your future aspirations? Where do you see
your American Battery Solutions in the next five years?
In the next five years, we expect to see some major growth
as we launch new products and enter new markets. While
we started our journey focusing on transportation, we are
now in the development of the next generation of grid
energy storage solutions. We have brought on an amazing
team with deep knowledge in the grid ESS space who are
leading us into these new markets and applications.
Beyond that, we are already looking into next-generation
technologies, including wireless BMS, cell-to-pack, and
advanced chemistries for our future generations of batteries.
As these technologies become market-ready, we are
prepared to bring them to market.
ABS anticipates announcing several major projects in the
first half of 2022, including programs in the bus, delivery
vehicle, marine, grid, and mining markets.

Empowering Global Communities by
Increasing Access to Energy Storage Solutions
We are living in a world where the energy crisis is
a growing concern. Avoiding energy waste and
taking actions that are in harmony with the
principle of sustainable development has become more
necessary than ever. Many companies took the
responsibility to meet the needs of both our present and our
future by building solutions keeping sustainability in mind.
One such company is Aceleron Ltd.
Aceleron was formed with a mission to accelerate the
global shift to cleaner energy usage by creating storage
technology that is more accessible to all. The company
creates batteries that give people the ability to access and
use energy in a cheaper, more effective way because they
are easy to repair, reuse, and recycle physically.
We caught up with Amrit Chandan, the Co-founder and
CEO of Aceleron, to know more about the company and
how it contributes to building sustainable solutions that can
minimize the carbon crisis in the world.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
What led to the inception of the company and take us
through your role at the company?
Carlton and I met in an electric car at an energy trade show
in 2015 and got talking about the serious issue of battery
waste and the harmful effects on the environment. Most
batteries are made by welding the parts together, so when
one part fails, the entire battery is no longer useful in its
current state. We decided that between us, we could design
a new kind of battery, where every part is repairable,
replaceable, and recyclable - and that is what we have done
with ‘The Essential’.
As a CEO and Co-founder of Aceleron, I am responsible for
setting the vision and the culture of the organization. I am
bringing together a cadre of excellent people to solve a real
looming challenge in the world.
Being an experienced business leader, what is your
opinion regarding the impact of the COVID-19
pandemic on the EV industry? And how has your
organization managed to overcome this significant
challenge?
Covid-19 has caused much disruption in the world, but it
has also given us a great opportunity to pause and reflect on
the way we do things.
Specifically, within the battery industry, the availability of
electronic components and volatility in the raw material
markets means that the general cost of batteries has
increased significantly over the last 12-month period. This
is a wider systemic issue than just batteries in that it has
impacted the automotive sector and other sectors too but we
are definitely feeling the bite.
On the other hand, demand for batteries and renewables has
increased significantly as more people become aware of the
climate crisis we face.
Describe the company and its innovative technologies
improving the environment and costs for the clients.
Aceleron has designed The Essential, the world's first
circular economy battery which is built to be repaired,
reused, and recycled. The ability to repair the battery makes
it a 'battery for life'; after the initial purchase, the battery
will need to be serviced and repaired over time but never
completely replaced, keeping long-term costs down and
making it the first of its kind.

Kindly provide an insight into your company's durable
products and services serving a variety of industries on
a global scale.
Using a unique compression technology developed by
Aceleron, The Essential is built so that every part that needs
to be replaced can then be repurposed or recycled, meaning
no part should ever need to go to landfill.
It can provide uninterrupted, reliable power at several
different voltages and covers a range of high-spec,
high-powered applications from leisure vehicles to medical
response vehicles and light electric vehicles. It can also be
used individually or in series to provide an uninterrupted
power source for larger applications such as a data centre.
On a global scale, our batteries give people the ability to
access and use energy in a cheaper, more effective way. For
example, we have a partner in Kenya called ASOBO Boats
where we have replaced the diesel engines on fishing boats
with our electric motors and batteries. Not only has this
reduced the cost of operation for the fishermen (no need for
expensive fuels), but it is helping to clean up the lake,
significantly reducing carbon emissions, allowing the
natural habitat to thrive in a pollutant free environment.
As a company in the EV, what advance technologies are
you leveraging to make your services more productive
and approachable?
There are two key aspects here;
(i) the hardware to package batteries in a way that doesn't
require permanent assembly techniques (spot welds etc) and
therefore makes the battery easy to physically repair, reuse
and recycle.
(ii) the software intelligence to collect data on the battery
and know which components are useful for which second
life application – for example, some EV battery cells may
be great to power a light electric car whilst others would be
great for powering a house.
In what ways has the company contributed to the
community? If given a chance, what change would you
bring to help other Electronics Vehicle companies?
Aceleron has a strong focus on positive social impact.
Directly through the use of our products, we estimate we
have now impacted over 150,000 persons around the world.
This is just a drop in the ocean of our ambition; so much
more will happen.
Separately, we regularly help people skill up through the
Aceleron Internship Programme and team members are
encouraged to take part in promoting STEM and
sustainability within the local communities within which
we operate. For example, some of our projects (e.g. our
programme with the InterAmerican Development Bank in
the Caribbean have an element of presenting to young
people in schools and educating them on the benefits of
renewables and batteries as well as pursuing STEM subjects
in higher education.
It would be great if other EV companies could adopt the
triple bottom line thinking where consideration is given not
only to profit, but to society and the environment which
would ultimately lead to the creation of a virtuous cycle.
What are your company's future aspirations?
The world is rapidly electrifying – the need has never been
greater. We want to provide a solution to the potential
challenge of battery waste that we seem to almost be
sleepwalking into. We also want to positively impact at
least 10m people around the world through our technology
and leave the world in a better place than when we started.

would say it is nothing but a daydream. Today that

Yes, it is possible if we keep the right approach and EV
solutions are definitely at the forefront of it.
What it Brings to the Table ?
Ironically, humans are responsible for the harmful effects on
the environment, and we could also repair it by introducing
such EV solutions. Yes, that’s what humans are capable of;
we have made it possible with the help of EV companies
and are ready to transform the automotive industry. And
that’s what the real challenge is, bringing a transformation
in the world through EV solutions.
The effects of the transportation sector on the environment
are becoming a severe issue. Electric Vehicles solutions are
here to control the threat caused by the automotive industry.

grows. Ultimately, living in a healthy and clean climate will
impact our lives, so living sustainably with EV is the way to
go. There will soon be a world of the best EV solutions to
serve electric vehicles with no carbon mobility with the best
tech tools out. There are already EV companies improving
the solutions sustainably.

Electric Vehicles are the shift of the transformation from the
traditional to the modern approach of living. Most of the
works done by the EV solutions revolve around dealing the
environmental challenges. They are the reason behind
building a culture of innovation and transformation through

It resembles more in the situation like the ongoing
pandemic where companies faced bigger transportation

When it comes to decarbonizing transportation, we need
better batteries with increased drive range, reduced
charging time, and improved safety, all at a lower cost. This
is what exactly Addionics has brought to the market.
Addionics was incepted with a strong mission to
revolutionize the energy storage industry by building the
best battery architecture on the market. It aims at unlocking
the full potential of energy storage for a range of
applications, including electric vehicles, aviation and

How It all Started?
It all started seven years ago, when Moshiel Biton, the
CEO of Addionics, was working on his Ph.D. in material
engineering at Imperial College London. During that
period, Samsung had a huge problem with their Galaxy
Note 7 phones, as they were randomly catching on fire.
Moshiel, along with his colleagues, started exploring why
the phone’s battery was combusting.
Eventually, they were the first team in the world to
investigate the issue in real-time and ended up making a
surprising discovery that they thought could revolutionize
the way batteries are designed. They found that the battery
issues in the Galaxy Note 7 were due to a known chemical
phenomenon of metal dendrites, which are metal spikes that
can grow inside batteries and make holes from within.
Through their research, Moshiel and his team realized that
the dendrites' unique structure and their way of growing
inside the battery can actually be used to their benefit. He
felt very motivated to pursue this idea, which resulted in the
inception of Addionics
A Take on Electrification
According to Moshiel, with climate change problems and
the rising interest in green energy and our everyday life
becoming digitized, electrification will be a part of every
industry. However, battery performance and innovation
hasn’t kept up with this transition. The key performance of
battery capacity, charging time, safety, lifetime, and battery
costs are insufficient today.
Moreover, when talking about electric vehicles, range
anxiety is a big issue preventing wider adoption. To get
more energy, you need more batteries, which means more
weight and paradoxically eventually reduced range while
increasing overall costs.
For renewable production, we need to store the energy
before supplying it to the grid. The world needs a huge
amount of safe and cheap batteries in order to move to
100% renewable energy production.
Moshiel asserts,“While most efforts to enhance battery
performance to date have been focused on battery
chemistry, this has only led to incremental changes over the
past 30 years. The key to the next step-change in battery
performances lies within its structure.”
Through its unique focus on battery physics, Addionics is
creating the next generation of energy storage. The
chemistry-agnostic solution allows improving the capacity,
charging time, safety, lifetime, and cost of batteries. The
physics-based solution is unique due to its ability to
improve any kind of battery chemistry in the market,

Addionics is redesigning the traditional battery structure
using smart 3D electrodes. The advanced 3D electrodes are
produced in-house by a cost-effective and scalable metal
fabrication manufacturing process, which is the company’s
main IP. The Smart 3D Electrodes are able to improve all
key parameters of the battery simultaneously, with no
tradeoff. The design supports the higher loading of active
material while reducing the internal resistance and
improving mechanical stability and heat dissipation.
The company also uses an AI-based optimization algorithm
to predict the best structure according to application and
accelerate the development process. Addionics’ product is a
drop-in solution and can be fully integrated into any battery
assembly line. This revolutionary approach creates a
significant step-change in the performance of all key battery
characteristics simultaneously at a cheaper cost of
ownership.
Rising to Challenges
Undoubtedly, the pandemic has indirectly increased the
global awareness of climate change and the actions we have
to take in order to prevent a climate disaster, such as

Pthat Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel and his associates
kept alive. However, the entrance barriers in the
conventional automotive world did not allow for new
players, so initially, they transferred their passion for cars to
different projects. They established the Cyprus Car
Museum, which contains over 150 classic cars where each
one is more special than the other.
On the other hand, they participated in solar-powered car
races by developing solar-powered car projects with the
R&D and Project production power of Near East
University. They established the most advanced
supercomputer in the region and worked on embedded
software.
The disruptive innovation in the automotive sector created
by the number of electric cars increasing around the world
showed them that it was the right time to produce a car, and
Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel established GÜNSEL. The
experience and knowledge that he and his team had
previously obtained laid the foundation for GÜNSEL.
Bringing Net Carbon Emissions to Zero
North Cyprus is located at the centre of the Mediterranean
and is a place that has sunshine virtually all year round.
When building its manufacturing facilities and R&D centre,
GÜNSEL used a design that would enable it to obtain
maximum benefit from the sun. At the same time, its work
to produce its own electricity using solar energy with the
solar panels that it will install on the roof of its facility is
continuing.

populated countries. Therefore, the company was able to
resume its production and development activities by taking
the necessary precautions. It continued its development
studies for the B9 and J9 models and facility investments.
However, due to the nature of this sector, it is working
together with 800 suppliers from different parts of the
world. The problems that its suppliers faced due to the
pandemic naturally also affected the company and increased
its costs.
Dr. İrfan mentions that the global chip crisis along with
other problems encountered during this time including
logistic processes have negatively affected the electric car
industry.
