Hi everyone, I’m _______ and today I will talk about solution, Layers. Here’s a picture of all my group members here. Just want to highlight the picture above. the picture manages to match this old photo to the current scene? This encapsulates what our solution aims to do, which is to present both the old and the new to the users. Let me go into the overview and the reason.
To describe our technology in 1 line, our solution aims to present old and new in the form of pictures and videos. It should help those who visit historical landmarks visualize how it would have looked like through the ages. It is important because solution and its the applications will take a step forward in the historical experience by augmenting present reality through images and videos.
Now I will go on to who our target users are. Most tourists travel with friends and family on holiday. They are intend to learn and experience the cultural aspects of Singapore. As we can see from the Singapore tourism board statistics, the 2 of the most popular destination are our ethic enclaves and cultural experience here is rated highly. We want to help faciliate this. The activity that we are going to focus on here is phototaking. We went down to the historical site chosen and what you see here is a diagram of are the activities from our observation. We would like to think that taking a photo or video is something that all tourists will do regardless of their level of interest. If the tourist is not that interested in the history of the place, they will still take pictures, but perhaps goofy shots of themselves or a group photo that just to show that they have visited the place before.
We also did an informal survey on the kinds of objects and purpose of taking photos. These pictures on the right are taken from travelblogs and flikr. We found that the typical photo taken by a tourist focuses on landmarks and are activity centred. They often are static and posed. With more memory card space nowadays tourists can be quite trigger happy, its is not uncommon to take up to 100 or 200 photos per day. However, Often these pictures are taken without appreciation for the cultural significance of their photo subject. Pictures are mementos, used to share and seek affirmation. they are tools to document life and for storytelling. We want to use the existing activity of taking photos and using that as our tool to increase cultural awareness of the significance of the place. Photos taken will have an old image layered over it, altering not just the surroundings but the people themselves (e.g. clothing, accessories). This is so that we can engage the user so that they feel a greater sense of being in the “time period”. This generates stronger emotional response, as opposed to having merely the surroundings altered. We also want to give the photo the feel of the era, not just the content of the picture (atmosphere and flash) but also the picture itself eg. b/w film, sepia, also how the picture is presented, e.g. as a poster, as a Polaroid, as a film star capture. We are want to making heritage video trails i.e. specific spots on the heritage site where tasks can be carried out and captured on video. For example, buying a movie ticket in the present and the footage being edited by software later.
(creates interest, tension, visual representation of being in different time periods) (bringing people involved in similar activity to where it used to be conducted)
Our choice of study (for the purpose of this presentation): The Cathay
Now I will go on to the technology. Here are 2 use cases of our solution. The first use case on the left is similar to photofunia. Facee recognition applicable to whole building, or at least AREAS of significance. (not merely stated photo-taking points) in these areas one is free to take whatever angle ( geo-tagging;gps – allows software to recognise building, and pull out images from a database, e.g. ‘the cathay building files’, programs which can take images of the same object which can take two images and blend them together- more advanced photo-recognition software: recognises the perspective and angle shot was taken (allows above) face-recognition (allows for change of clothing etc to person, with the person still remaining in the same position) 3d modelling of the site (model created from old images/plans etc) so 2d image can be rendered from any angle and overlaid.
Our strengths of the solution is that we help tourists add on to their existing photos and videos. Also, in terms of technology, users will just have to be of “normal” technical ability as it only involves uploading. This is especially so if you compare it to our first iteration, where it will required users to download and activate a software into their smartphones. User can store the images, unlike augmented reality. Our solution is also feasible and you can actually implement it using today’s technologies. We also feel that by putting themselves in the picture, it becomes more personal. In terms of learning, this serves as a stepping stone to get them interested in the site. Their learning driven by own inspiration, interest and desire to learn more, and we believe that this would be more interactive then the usual heritage signs that you see.
I will like to wrap up by asking the audience 2 questions. Firstly, will our target users be too lazy to upload their pictures and videos? And secondly Will the changes in images spur their interest and thoughts of the historical significance of the building? Thank you! We appreciate your feedback.
