13. Model verb чадах

14. Modal constructions
• -хтай, -хтай үгүй:
• Хэрэгтэй, хэрэггүй – have to, ought to, need to,
should
• Ёстой, ёсгүй - must
• Дуртай, дургүй – to like,
• Санаатай санаагүй – to intend with thought
• Бодолтой, бодолгүй – same as above
• Боломжтой, боломжгүй – to be possible
• Хүсэлтэй, хүсэлгүй – to desire, with the desire
• Учиртай, учиргүй – to have reason to
15. Байх(aa)
• If baih is used at the end of a sentence, it indicates that
the statement is a presumption. The meaning is
stronger than magadgui (=perhaps, may be). So this
modal is best translated as probably or most likely.
• If baih is used together with the particle –aa, then the
meaning is similar to a tag question.
• If a true and maybe hurting statement is meant to be
more polite, this construction is used.
• Very often, sentences with this construction are used
in the future (presumptions are usually future related)
and therefore the NDS –x is commonly used.
17. ... юм байна
• These two words together express surprise.
One finds out something that one didn’t know
before. In colloquial language the particle –lee
is to express a careless attitude.
• In English we best translate with supposed to
be … or said to be… or use a word that
expresses surprise.
18. For examples:
• Сониноос түүний нөхөр нь маш баян хүн юм байна
лээ.
• Тэдний байр нь их хүйтэн юм байна лээ.
• Ооё, тэр охин японоор ярьж чаддаг юм байна.
• Бат хөгжим сонирхдог юм байна лээ.
• Хүүхдүүд нь эцэг эхийгээ их санадаг юм байна. I
found out that the children miss their parents a great
deal.
• Хэцүү л юм байна даа. – Boy, that’s difficult!
• Үүнийг хийхэд их мөнгө хэрэгтэй юм байна. – ugh, to
do this, one needs a lot of money!
19. -сан бол- ...
• Primarily, this construction expresses that the
action is not done with delight or pleasure,
but rather unwillingly, forced or just to
pretend. Contrary to the construction –хаас
даа, this construction is used for an action
that continues over a longer period of time.
Secondly, it is used to show a modest
attitude.
21. -х гэсэн юм
• This construction which is widely used in
colloquial language expresses a desire or an
intention of the 1st person. It is similar to –
маар байна, but the speaker uses this
expression to make his intention clear, to
avoid being misunderstood.
• Би Монголд очих гэсэн юм.
• Би түүнтэй уулзах гэсэн юм.
• Би монгол дээл авах гэсэн юм.
22. ... бололтой
• This construction expresses the meaning it
seems/looks as if. There must be reasons for
such a presumption.
• Тэр ирсэн бололтой.
• Бороо орох бололтой.
23. -х юмсан, -хсан4
• This construction expresses I would (I’d) like to …
. It is not a realistic desire as the Би явмаар
байна, but more a imaginary thinking. Note that
the particle –сан also appears in subjunctive
sentences and is therefore connected with a
mood of imagination.
• Би хөдөө явах юмсан.
• Энэ зун Германд амрах юмсан.
• Болдог сон бол Америк явах сан.
• Мөнгтэйсэн бол iphone авахсан.
24. Байлтай, ... байлгүй
• Similar to the construction байхаа this
statement is likely to be true. Using байлтай
gives a high percentage of truth, as all factors
are in favor of one’s statement: It must be ….
Using байлгүй the chance is less: it’s likely to
…
• Тэр монгол хүн байлтай, Тэр монгол хүн биш
байлтай, Тэр ирсэн байлтай, Тэр монгол хүн
байлгүй, Би явах байлгүй.
25. ... –сан юмсан
• This construction is used if something doesn’t
out as planned or desired. Ex. You talked with

27. -хаас (даа)
• This construction is similar to the –сан бол-,
which also expresses an unvillingness. It’s likely
that expression which could be literary translated
as ‘…than to…’ , originated from the sentence
“Тэгэхээс өөр арга байхгүй дээ” meaning. There
is no other way than to do this. Say the English
sentences with a deep sigh after the ‘well’ to get
the feeling.
• Би хоол хийхээс дээ.
• Тэр ирэхгүй нь, би явахаас даа.
