Criteria for Site Selection
(Listed in order of importance)
1. Urban locale with active environments.
2. Adjacent active zones which are disconnected
3. Drastic changes in environment of short distances
4. Competing forces at the site
5. Physical divisions, boundaries, or impediments
6. Greater densities = more interactivity
7. Abutting and varied land uses
8. Rich history, prior uses and activities
9. Contrasting demographics within small area
10. Juxtaposed zoning districts
11. Straddling neighborhood, community area, or ward boundaries

Searching for a site within Chicago to explore my project ideas is more of a convenience than a
deliberate decision. It is my goal that my project will develop from a conscious effort to re-examine
urban conditions and restrictions. In order for my final design solution to be successful, I believe I will
need to have a very fundamental understanding of the site I choose and the history and social/political
climate of the city which it is in. Although more fruitful opportunities may exist outside of Chicago (or
even the U.S.) I am afraid that if I choose a distant site I will not be able to visit it and/or will not have
the time to understand the conditions of the site fully.
Possible Site 1 – Museum Campus / South Grant Park / South Loop
