1. AUTHORITY Henry Fayol said : “the right to give orders and powers to exact obedience is authority”

2. FUNCTIONS OF AUTHORITY The subordinate who accepts the authority of the of the superior is motivated to a great extent by the fear of sanctions. He knows that if he disobeys, an elaborate sets of sanctions may be invoked against him. It enforces obedience to norms 01 An extremely important function of authority is to enable the enforcement and execution of expert advice given by specialists in the organization. A fundamental device for securing this is to locate the specialist in strategic position in formal hierarchy of authority. It secures expertise in making decision 02 By the exercise of authority it is possible to centralize the function of decision making and to force all members to take mutually consistent decisions. It permits centralization of the decision making and coordination of activities 03

Authority of superior originates in the willingness of his subordinates to accept it. In the other words authority is legitimized by the subordinates. If the subordinates does not accept authority, the it does not exists or not real. 01 02 03

5. RESPONIBILITY “the obligation of subordinate to obey the decision is responsibility”

6. It is the obligation of a person to perform certain duties written in a job description or otherwise accepted by him. RESPONSIBILITY FOR 01 It is his accountability to his superiors. It is inevitably associated with check up, supervision, control and punishment. RESPONSIBILITY TO 02 DIMENSIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY

7. RESPONSIBILITY AND DELEGATION Responsibility cannot be delegated or transferred. The superior can delegate to a subordinate the authority to perform and accomplish a specific job. But he cannot delegate responsibility in the sense that once he assign duties, he is relived of responsibility. The delegation of tasks does not absolve the superior from his own responsibility for effective performance of his subordinates. 01 02 03 Marketing Manager

8. The subordinate must have been delegated enough authority to undertake all the duties which have been assigned to him and for which he has accepted responsibility.
