INTRODUCTION
 Slavery has existed since the buiging human being history.
 People were enslaved for a number of reasons (be captured in battle,
owing a debt,or being born to slave parents).
 “Slavery refers to a condition in which individuals are owned by
others, who control where they live and at what they work.” E2BN_East of
Englend BROADBAND Network and Mla East of England 2009
 This phenomena spread in north America after the Spanish and
Portuguese began bringing slaves from Western Africa in 1503 to
replace Native Americans workers. Then slavery became essential to
the making of the United States.
THE AIM OF THE STUDY IS
 Slavery formed a big part from the American history.
 Slavery abuses human rights and dignity.
CENTRAL QUESTION
• Slavery formed a big part in the American
history, what were the main reasons behind it? And
how it took place?
HYPOTHESIS
1. To strengthen its economy , America took advantage of
the African slaves to make a powerful leading force in the
world.
2. To reconstruct the ‘’ NEW‘’ continent with different races
, But it went wrong.
HOW SLAVERY CAME TO THE U.S.?
• Slavery introduced by the Spanish into the West Indies
after Columbus’s discovery of America.
• Spanish and Portuguese expanded African slavery into
Central and South American after enslaved Indians began
dying off.
• In 1619, the first Africans were brought to the colony
Jamestown, Virginia by the Dutch.(20 slaves only)
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
 Africans were captured, then packed tightly into slave
ships, 50% died.
Slaves captured in Africa
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
Devices used in Capture
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
A slave yolk was used to bind two slaves together.
Slaves were packed tightly on
ships, shackled and fed very
little for the 3-5 month journey.
About 18 million Africans
were transported between 1600
and 1800, with about 3 million
dying on the way.
SLAVES ABOARD SHIP—MIDDLE PASSAGE.
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
Destination
 Most Africans landed in Brazil with the least number
landing in North America.
 Slaves were auctioned off to plantation owners and
businessmen from the city and performed a variety of
tasks.
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
 New England merchants gain access to slave trade in the
early 1700s.
o Rum brought to Africa, exchanges for slaves.
o Ships cross the Middle Passage, slaves trades in the
West Indies.
o Sugar brought to New England.
 Other items trades across the Atlantic, with substantial
profits from slavery making merchants rich.
 Disease, torture, malnourishment, death for slaves.
The Triangular Trade

Manufactured Goods
•Furniture
•Clothing
•Colonials had
not factories.
From
England to
Colonies
THIS IS CALLED THE MIDDLE PASSAGE
Reasons for Using Enslaved African Labor.
Experience:
They had previous experience and knowledge working in sugar and
rice production.
Immunity from diseases:
Less likely to get sick due to prolonged contact over centuries.
Low escape possibilities:
They did not know the land, had no allies, and were highly visible
because of skin color.
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
Slave life
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
The education was generally illegal.(they couldn’t read
or write)
Most slaves had Sundays off and they went to church.
Slaves were usually sent to work in the sugar cane filds ;
cotton,tobacco…
- The cotton formed 60% of the american
economics.
Slave owners felt that it was an advantage to allow slaves
to marry after asking permission.(new born children
would be in their wealth).
• “…people live in cotton houses and ride
in cotton carriages. They buy cotton,
sell cotton, think cotton, eat cotton,
drink cotton, and dream cotton. They
marry cotton wives and unto them are
born cotton children…”
• British visitor Hiram Fuller’s views of
Mobile, AL in 1858
Slaves had no legal way to be protected from Master’s
harsh treatment and abuse.
Slave Codes-They could not: leave their home without a
pass, carry a weapon, gather in groups, own property,
legally marry, defend themselves against a white person,
or speak in court.
THE BEGUINING OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.
•Muzzle used to prevent
slave from eating or
drinking too much
•Punishment Slave Collar( to locate them)
RESISTANCE
Slaves didn’t just sit back and accept a life of servitude.
Slaves resisted in a number of ways including; escaping,
slowing down on the job, intentionally doing a job wrong
or participating in violent rebellion.
Slaves resisted
RESISTANCE.
Refusal to reproduce-Women refused to have children.
Covert Action-Slaves would sometimes kill animals, destroy
crops, start fires, steal stuff, break tools, poison food.
FORMS OF RESISTANCE
Slaves also resisted by singing spirituals, or religious folk songs
that often contained coded messages.
Slave spirituals led to the creation of both jazz and the blues.
RESISTANCE.
One of the most famous slave revolts occurred in Virginia. A
slave named Nat Turner led 70 other slaves in the killing of
55 white men, women and children. Turner and his men were
later captured and hung.
Southern account of
Turner’s rebellion.
RESISTANCE.
Even more threatening to the ability
of the slave system was running away
Slaves had little or no knowledge of
geography, apart from understanding
that the North Star led to freedom.
It is estimated that up to 100,000
slaves escaped the South with the
help of “conductors”, or guides. The
most famous of these guides was
Harriet Tubman.
Harriet Tubman
While slavery was outlawed in
the North, escaping slaves were
not truly free until they reached
Canada.
RESISTANCE.
THE CIVIL WAR
Election of 1860 and the Start of the Civil War
Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860 without any
southern electoral votes.
Many southern states quickly seceded from the Union,
South Carolina leading the way.
The North fought to preserve the Union, while the South
fought to preserve slavery.
THE CIVIL WAR
The Emancipation Proclamation
Early in the war, Lincoln began to
think about ending slavery in the
South to help end the war.
On September 22, 1862 he issued
the Emancipation Proclamation
which declared an end to slavery in
the states in rebellion on January 1,
1863.
What did it do? Nothing. It only
freed slaves in the states that had
seceded.
THE CIVIL WAR
End of the Civil War
The South lost, and the states were forced to accept the
13th Amendment to the Constitution before they could be
readmitted into the Union.
13th Amendment-It abolished slavery in the United
States.
It was ratified in 1865.
THE CIVIL WAR
THE CIVIL RIGHTS
The African-American Civil Rights Movement was an ongoing
fight for racial equality that took place for over 100 years after
the Civil War.
Leaders such as Marten Luther king Jr Booker T washington,
and Rosa Parks paved the way for non-violent protests which
led to changes in the law.
Finally African succeded and got their rights…
From 1863 slavery ended and African-Americans have rights like other U.S.
citizens.
To be educated, to vote, to defend them selves… until 2008 when Barack
Obama was the first African-American elected President of the United
States.
Conclusion
American history is attashed to slavery and it’s an emportant part
of it.
At the End of this research and for an answer of the question: «
Slavery formed a big part in the American history, what were the
main reasons behind it? And how it took place? »
African slaves weren’t invited to live in the new continent and work
peacefully but they were captured to use them to form a world
economic power without doing any effort. they’ve been tortured
without mercy and working without a break.
