Nino Migliori, one of the greatest Italian
photographers, as well as father of
oxidation, defines the photograph:
“footprint, withdrawal from realty, a
fragment of the reality chosen and
interpreted by the photographer”.

5. What is an oxidation?
Oxidation in traditional photography is the chemical reaction of the
development on the silver salts darkened by the light.
It works simply by baths of developing and fixing, light, heat and photo
paper, the basic elements of the photograph. You can play with the
different response times of the acids, developing and fixing, with the light
of the sun, and so on.
For example: take a leaf, get it wet in the development, leans pressing
on the sensitive paper and it ralize a mark that it is black. If we get wet
the leaf in fixing mode its mark will be white and the rest of the paper,
subsequently developed, black.
From here there are billions of intermediate variations, depending on the
different dilutions of acids or by, the way of using them.
The photograph, in this way, it is not only a means of illustration or
documentation, but it becomes real expressive language.

To make an oxidation you need:
• Photo paper
• Developer
• Fixer
• Any material

If you want the impression WHITE
put the photo paper in the FIXER.
If you want the impression BLACK
put the photo paper in the
DEVELOPER.

Off Camera: landscape through the
photographic experimentation
Project:
With this project, the participants approach to photography through direct
manipulation of photographic materials, experimenting with colour and shape
variations caused by light, working in the dark, with experiences in which the
personal gesture, imagination and creativity are the common denominator.
This project contributes to encourage personal creativity, imagination and
expression in a context of investigation, documentation and knowledge of the
landscape.
GENERAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Acquire new skills to observe all forms of heritage and be able to interpret them
using traditional and unusual tools of expression;
- Learn to observe the environment in critical terms;
- Understand the importance of a strong and respectful interaction with the
cultural heritage;
- Learning about techniques of representation and documentation of reality in an
experimental way (photo).
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
- Dissemination of photographic art.
- Understanding of its many creative languages
- Knowledge and testing of photographic techniques
- Return to “primitive” photographic techniques
