9. MA TAU WAI AREA
Ma Tau Wai area is complex and narrow area, wiht high density residential program, and busy street life in between of
road intersections. It lacks functional diversity and public open spaces. The new train station needs to be underground
box to fit under Ma Tau Wai Road. The new Ma Tau Wai Station is linked in the MTR subway network line, called “Shatin
to Central link (SCL).” This plan was proposed by MTR Company and it should be strategic infrastructure development
for the community, which connects several districts of the Hong Kong City (New Territories - East Kowloon - Hong Kong
Island).
This proposal envisions a new kind of infrastructure which together with underground station forms a vertical loop and
offers a multitude of programs and a diversity of public spaces.
This area has narrow and compact urban fabric, with mostly high density residential program, intersected whit Ma Tau
Wai Road and elevated high speed Kowloon City Road. This area is still sentimental and romantic, probably one of the
last unchanged areas in Kowloon, or simply some can recognize Kowloon side of Hong Kong as it was 30 years ago, in
the era of Wall City before is demolished. Street level is very alive, packed with small different stores whit goods, food,
clothing, Chinese style restaurants and bakeries.

MA TAU WAI Station has five Exits I Entrances. It is underground box, build from two Platforms and Concourse
level. Reason for two Platforms is in fewer places to have two train lines in one Platform. Main aim for Station
design was to bring natural light inside, and to design column less structure station. Castellated beams struc-
ture with hexagonal openings is holding whole station in 32 axes. Station is 17.5 m wide and 305 m long. In
Concourse level there are Costumers area, Transfer area, Technical rooms, Control room, Costumer service,
Shops and Tea/Coffee corner. Concourse level is connected whit ground level whit escalators. Tree elevators
are connecting station whit towers and elevated open area. Trough the middle of station there are light wells,
providing natural lightning in Concourse level.

18. A very narrow, 703 m2 construction site, with utilization coefficient
of min. 0.2 - max. 0.3. The investors were demanding the maximum
use of space and the biggest possible area of the building. To make
matters more complex, the site was located in a protected “green”
zone for which the special regulations were in place, i.e. 70% of the
ground had to remain under the green belt.
The land was sloped downward, oriented north to south. From east,
the view extended to the surrounding hills and woods, from west,
the view was set on the castle of St.Martin, and from south, the view
extended towards the city of Graz.
Effective architectural solution is to utilize the terrain that is sloped
downward and build with cascading technique. Two apartments
were built, Top 2 with the 100m2 and Top 1 with 110m2, spacious
terraces with 72m2 (Top1) and 100m2 (Top2), and an underground
garage where for each user 2 parking spaces and storage was se-
cured.
Both apartments have direct exit to separate parts of the garden,
and the user from Top 1 apartment has a private swimming pool.
The roof is level to the ground, and because of the regulation in the
green zone, it was built with intense green cover of 50 cm.
Parcel utilization amounted to 0.2988 (210.11m2) from total allowa-
ble coefficient of 0.30. Solar panels were constructed at the roof of
the house. With the solar panel installation, the underfloor heating
and hot water supply was implemented throughout the object. The
object was built and finished at the end of 2014.

26. HONGKONG
Since the 1841 and the British colonial rule, Hong Kong was a city-state and
more recently known as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s
Republic of China (PRC) with semi-autonomous status. Hong Kong is located
on the south Chinese coast, surrounded by the Pearl River Delta and the
South China Sea. It has a territory of 1,104 km2, with population of 7.15 million
estimated by the Hong Kong’s government in 2012. Hong Kong is one of the
densest areas in the world. It is well known for impressive skyline and deep
natural harbor. On Cantonese or Hakka language, the name “Hong Kong”
means “fragrant harbor”. Hong Kong’s topography is impressive as well, and
it consists of over 200 islands, steep hills and the sea. The infrastructure in
Hong Kong has a linear orientation and compact grid because of the almost
unbuildable landscape.
According to Hong Kong’s Department of Statistics in 2008, the population of
Hong Kong Island on the area of 20 km2 of developed land was 1.3 million
people. Just 25% of Hong Kong Island (80 ha area) is urbanized, where 75%
are parks and mountains.
Because of the high economic growth, impressive topography and
infrastructure, the city of Hong Kong is highly convenient for living, and it
attracts business partners and tourists from all over the globe. Hong Kong
has a high position on economic powerhouse, and it is recognized as an elite
international finance center, one of the major logistic and knowledge centers.
It is also well known as a low tax and free trade zone. The Hong Kong Stock
Exchange is one of the largest in the world. Chep Lak Kok Airport is one of
the biggest and busiest cargo airports in the world. The Hong Kong’s port is
the third busiest container port in the world, immediately after Singapore and
Shanghai. In 2011, Hong Kong’s GDP per capita (US$ 49,800) outstripped
that of Switzerland (US$ 43,900). Unfortunately, like in many other neoliberal
country policies across the world, there is a huge gap between very rich and
very poor people. From 7, 15 million inhabitants in Hong Kong, 1, 3 million is
still living in poverty.1
The Hong Kong’s architecture was not meant to be purely esthetic, but rather
rational and efficient, a direct answer to specific conditions, like topography,
climate, economic and political factors.

EXTERIOR CURTAIN WALL+STRUCTURE 1. 2. 3.
_STRUCTUREStructure must fulfill many demands. It needs to be resistant and elastic, because it is located in windy climate.
The main part of the structure is a double 12,50m x 25m concrete CORE. The core is connected with struc-
tural steel outrigger truss and composite (concrete covered steel vertical sections) supercolumn system. The
system is enclosed with four paired and four diagonal supercolumns along 45-degree axis. Diagonal super-
columns are needed because of the long distances between the main supercolumns at the base. Distance
between diagonal and main column is approximately 25m.
NINE ZONES, each zone with 12-15 floors, are vertically spreaded within the tower. Two-story mechanical
area is based on the top of each tower, with mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment. Mechanical floor
is planned as a safety escape area.
The tower has special curtain wall design with two separated curtain wall systems. The inner skin is circular,
and exterior skin is cam-shaped with rounded corners similar to a guitar pick. The separation between the two
systems creates space for atria every 12-15 floors. With higher heights, the exterior skin cam-shaped plan
is reduced in size and becomes thinner. Also, the cam-shaped plan is slightly twisted around the central part
through each higher zone, giving an elegant and spiraling shape of the building.
The main aspect of this Tower is sustainable design development. The water treatment plants are integrated in
the tower with the goal of recycling grey water and storm water needed for watering and toilet flushing.
Water treatment plants are located within the tower, podium and basement level to decrease pumping energy.
The interim water is utilized in storage tanks within the building, and later on used on the principle of gravity.
The only energy used for water transport is low-pressure pumping energy, which provides water to each tank
based on a cascading effect that results reduction in water consumption.
Cutting and dividing tower into vertically stacked zones reduces the energy required for vertical transportation
within the tower, because of the central utility infrastructure and vertical city design concept.

08The base of 32m2 (8mx4m) is an ideal area for a weekend house
in the mountains. The roof had a sharp slope and it was planned to
obtain an additional gallery of 16 m2 under roof.
The house was intended to use the CLT cross-laminated timber pan-
els, which are stable and can meet the most stringent demands for
quality, cost-effectiveness and ecological sustainability. These pan-
els are known as fast, dry, clean and quiet building material. Due to
the prefabrication, the cross-laminated timber surface were cut and
prepared in the factory. With prepared reinforced concrete slab, the
building/making of this house was supposed to take only 2-3 days.
In the lower part of the house, the living room/kitchen, bathroom
and staircase are located, and at the gallery, a place to sleep. At the
entrance, there is a place for barbecue under the roof.

This client’s house is a passive house, which consumes 9,7 kwh/
m2a. Because of this, the house had to remain compact and sealed
on all sides with an insulation of 24 cm, and a system for air heating
and cooling pump, and solar panels on the roof of the house.
Usually, passive houses have small openings and windows, but this
is not the case with this object. The house has large glass pan-
els and exit doorways for the balcony, terrace and the garden. The
house was built from the CLT cross laminated timber panels, and it
is cost-effective and ecologically sustainable. House area is 155 m2
with a garage of 48 m2.
