The document summarizes the results of a survey about what viewers want in a soap opera. Key findings include:
1) Viewers want multiple storylines like popular soap EastEnders.
2) They prefer the relatable situations and drama of EastEnders.
3) An urban London setting would be most relatable.
4) Both female and male viewers should be targeted through a range of characters and both feminine and masculine themes like murder or adultery.
2. Introduction
• As part of my primary research task into soap
operas I made a 10 Question survey monkey
to find out what potential viewers want to see
from our trailer. These are the results from the
question and my intentions on what to do
with the results.
• I then interviewed 6 friends asking the same
questions and have used the two best
interviews also as part of my research.
3. Question 1
From these results I decided that multiple storylines is a must for my soap opera and I
will try to integrate this into my trailer.
4. Question 2
From these results I decided that my trailer should be similar to those from Eastenders as this
is the most popular Soap Opera.
7. Question 3 Continued
From these results I found out that people preferred Eastenders due to its relatable
situations and its extensive amounts of drama.
8. Question 4
From these results I can see most people want to see an Urban London settings this may be
due to our location and those who were surveyed wanting a relatable setting.
9. Question 5
These results connote that I should use an array of characters which will help with creating a
multi stranded storyline.
10. Question 6
These results confirm that stereotypically Soap Operas are more feminine and so I should keep
that in my trailer to keep to the target audience.
13. Question 7 Continued
These results conclude that soaps are generally more directed towards female viewers and so to
have a successful trailer I should involve some more feminine themes but also some male to
reach all of my target audience.
14. Question 8
From this I can see that most viewers would like to see my trailer involve murder or adultery so I
will make sure one of these two is involved in my trailer.
17. Question 9 Continued
From these results to engage a male audience I've decided I must use a “male gaze”(Laura
Nulvey) and the integration of more masculine topics such as violence and guns.
20. Question 10 Continued
From these results most people think that by adding a “male gaze”, violence and guns men
will be more likely to watch my soap opera.
21. Interview Video
• This link consists of my two best video
interviews and these responses in particular
helped to shape how I made my trailer.

22. Conclusion
• From my Primary research I have learnt that to attract my
target audience I should use multi-stranded storylines that
will engage the audience similar to Eastenders. I also learnt I
should use a Urban London setting so the audience can
“relate” (Katz) to the trailer. Similarly I found out that most
soaps have a largely female audience so I should stick to
themes used in popular soaps to keep to my target audience.
In order to attract male fans I learnt I should use themes such
as murder, guns and general violence whilst also using a
female main character to attract a “male gaze”(Laura Nulvey).
